I was wrong then - I guess it's not done in the "no coins" WR run because it's difficult to do with subpixels. Although if you could find out a setup that works for getting the pixel for RTA, you could shave several seconds off that WR run for no coins category extension

Good luck

I don't think what you're trying is possible in 8-1 - I could be wrong, but look up any run for no coins category extension

This is the world record no coins run. I imagine if it were possible to just do a wall jump there he would have. Instead he has to move the screen as far right as possible to spawn the Goomba on the other side of that chasm and then do a long jump on him to bounce kill him to make the jump.

Unfortunately I think your no kills no coins run might not be possible because of this spot.

From what I can tell, the gap is too big to be able to get a wall jump pixel while still staying under those coins.

Hopefully I'm wrong. Good luck.

Left + Right is by definition disallowed, so if it's ever done in a run, presumably the run would be disqualified

The reason is that you can't naturally do L+R on the original controller (short of breaking it), so it's also not allowed on all imitation consoles (e.g. emulators and virtual consoles) even if you COULD do it there. In the same way that "turbo" isn't allowed, but there are some controllers that have a turbo function.

The NES software allows Left+Right, but since the controller is one solid "plus sign", you can't connect the contacts for the "left" and "right" simultaneously.

Everything to make the imitation consoles as equal and non-advantageous to the NES as possible.

This game operates on a pretty specific whitelist of approved methods of playing -

Approved hardware/software (please specify in the run comment):

  • Original NES, Famicom or FDS
  • Original NES or Famicom with Everdrive or Powerpak
  • Wii, Wii U, Switch and 3DS Virtual Console
  • FCEUX, Nestopia, Bizhawk, OpenEMU
  • NES Classic Edition
  • Analogue NT Mini

I'm fairly sure any deviation from those specific instances would be disallowed, which would include a browser port of any of those.

It does beg the question, why would you want to play in a browser? I don't mean that to be snarky, I just can't imagine a situation where you'd be better off in a browser instead of using the actual allowed emu

Yeah I didn't use @roopert83 as an example on purpose :) - but 22nd to 130th is pretty insane.

But, I think we can all agree that if roopert spent a teeny amount of time grinding any% he'd pb

Here's a screencap of Summoning Salt's smb1 any% video - 2 years ago

https://i.ibb.co/JrZFyZS/smb-2-years-ago.png

TWO YEARS AGO, that's not THAT long ago

4:58 put you in SIXTH place 4:59 put you in 16th... and 5:00 put you in 19th place O.o

To compare to now... 4:56.6 puts you in sixth 4:57.4 puts you in 16th and 4:57.6 puts you in 19th and of course, as of this posting 4:59 puts you in 100th place

In this time, user @Pallidus moved from 7th to 67th

7th to 67th

SEVENTH TO SIXTY-SEVENTH

Mario has really come a long way in a relatively short amount of time

This is mega easy to use - you can even use it interchangeably between SFM and big fire (using SFM splits for this big fire spreadsheet) which would otherwise be impossible, since they don't "framerule" in the same milliseconds, but slightly offset

Since your sheet doesn't "SNAP" to individual rules, it totally works.

All that to say, loving this auto-generating sheet

FPG is a multiple frame-perfect trick. Even veteran runners can spend an hour trying and not get it a single time - even theoretically knowing how to do it.

Of the runners that REGULARLY use it in a run (For example somewes or kosmic), anecdotally it seems like they get it roughly 50% of the time - but I could be wrong

I myself haven't ever gotten it in real-time, and I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours playing this game - granted I haven't really tried very hard to learn FPG, but I never plan to use it in a run, and like @WolfAttacK said - it's not necessary until you are trying for a low 4:57 pace run. Although if you want to learn them for fun, more power to you.

However, BBG is a fairly simple trick. You could teach your neighbor that's never played mario how to do it, and he could get it on a savestate after maybe 50 attempts. That being said, even the best players in the world only have AT BEST around a 25-33% success rate at the trick. It's also frame-perfect, but much less so than FPG, and half the time you literally can't get it because of what's called "coin-toss" which has to do with mario's sub-pixel

Because of "coin-toss" even if you do the correct inputs, you will miss the trick half the time.

Some of the BBG part is outdated with current strategies (which usually involve holding down and right simultaneously as you're in the "saddle") - but that will still work - and gives you the general idea of how it's done

I'm not aware of a tutorial for blazit - but I'm sure one exists

Bullet Bill Glitch Disclaimer: I would not recommend trying this until attempting mid 4:58 or faster times BBG Forwards Jump (25% speed) ~~~ wait until the back of "bullet bill" is roughly even with the beginning of the middle pillar, then do two jumps to the top of the middle pillar, then a full jump https://media.giphy.com/media/42DYhwPe1XGwbN2GEa/giphy.gif

BBG Backwards Jump (50% speed) https://media.giphy.com/media/4NryB5qd9VQPgWspK7/giphy.gif

BBG Backwards Jump with slowdowns (50% Speed) https://media.giphy.com/media/1n3M4PKWCz4122xFWi/giphy.gif

This Backwards BBG setup is four parts:

  1. Backwards jump into the second stair
  2. Wait until the bullet is halfway past the second pillar
  3. Jump without holding right, then hold right when mario's feet are one full block up and do a FULL jump
  4. Run for roughly 3 frames on top of the middle pillar, then do another full jump
  • There is a new setup since this guide was written (and there is currently no gif showing this) which involves holding DOWN and RIGHT while waiting for the bill, then releasing down and jumping... this tends to be more consistent.

1-1 Flagpole Glitch (DISCLAIMER: This is not practical to add to a run until trying for roughly a low 4:57) See youtube.com/watch?v=ucBAwdS3YB4 for full tutorial

You must land on the 3rd block from the top on the first pixel while not holding "B" - on the first frame with mario in the "running" animation (as opposed to the jump/falling animation), you hold only right (not "A" or "B"), then for exactly the next 2 frames, hold "B", then do a full jump on the 3rd frame (as shown). Hold all inputs until the jump is completed. By the time you reach the flagpole block, you will need to release "A" and "B", and hold "left" for exactly 3 frames (as shown), then jump on the 4th frame. If you do the first "jump" half of the trick correctly, you will clip into the block assuming you do a full jump, even if you mess up the "second" part. If you do not clip into the block, it means you messed up the jump.

Frame counter will obviously be different depending on your pace - as long as you hit the first pixel on the block, it doesn't matter if you do a full or partial jump. In order to "save" the framerule, you will need to be 4 frames from perfect on the coin pipe section, which means that some "380"s will not be fast enough to save the rule. Credit to runner "Sockfolder" for finding out exact inputs for an RTA run.

First of all, you can TAS it yourself :) and for something obscure like this, I doubt anyone else would do it - not to sound mean, but nothing's stopping you from playing with these scenarios yourself - could be fun to learn more about the mechanics of the game by messing around with tool assisted runs.

Second, you have to slow down to clip into walls or pipes, so it would be slower than the normal strategy where you have to slow down slightly to make it past the piranha plant

Clipping into the pipe would be slower than the slight slowdown required to clear the plant

To the spirit of your question - I feel like you're asking if there was some external way to give yourself an audio or video cue as to when the level would start would THAT be legal... Like having your splits start a customized countdown to the start of 8-1... Where it would give you a flash of light or an audio tone exactly two frames before the level started.

I would think that wouldn't be illegal? But I could see a good argument either way. From a practical standpoint though... There's at most like 5 people (probably less) that could ever consider using 8-1 fpg in a run to beat the current wr... Or as an alternative to a current trick used in the wr (why?) and I would think those 5 people would rather just do it without an external cue, since it would take away some of the "glory" from an all-natural run

Or maybe it would be flat out illegal.

If that is your question it's an interesting one though. On a related note, when I was doing blindfolded any% mapping, I was using a metronome, which kinda falls under the same type of assistance. I never ended up doing a full run, just a bunch of IL - but if I HAD done a completed run using a metronome, that one other guy that's done a blindfolded run would still have outdone me (by some metrics) even though my time would probably be faster because he did it without any type of outside assistance

For a fully legal way to play the game (but more expensive) you can get an actual nes system from retro game stores for about $70 usd (seems to be the going rate in the US) which usually comes with system and a controller... Then mario/duck hunt for another $10-15 - or it might even come with the system. Then you need a crt monitor which you can usually get for free on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace, and if not free usually about $20.

To stream you can either record the TV, or use a capture card. A good capture card that's relatively cheap is the "gv-usb2" for only $35 from Amazon.

So all in that's the full 1980's setup ready to stream for around $100 USD
