United StatesYup! You can select any country, all that matters is selecting player G since he starts with 60HP while the others start with different amounts. Player G is a tiny bit slower I believe, but HP is all that matters. I'll post all of the data in a different guide post! I only pick Argentina for preference of their super shot.
Also, whichever country you pick gets replaced by USA. For example, when I pick Argentina, USA "becomes" Argentina (super freaking fast and difficult lol).
So if you were to pick Cameroon, then you would play USA instead of Cameroon, and they would be slow I believe. Where when you play USA as Argentina, USA is SUPER fast, They're so fast that they phase through you when they try to tackle you from a diagonal haha.
Yes! I've been meaning to post a guide explaining all of it, but I just haven't gotten around to it. To make the long story short, if you're using Arturo, (Or any country in which you select player G[second to the bottom on the right in select screen]) you will start each match with 60 HP. during any tackle (you tackling them or them tackling you) whichever player has LESS HP will fall down. (Or, if tied or -1, you'll "win" the tackle). West Germany is the only country that starts with more than 60 HP (70). a Slide tackle deals 3 damage, and a regular tackle does 9 (on defense) and 6 (if on offense and they knock themselves down).
And once you get HP to 0, player is dead and won't stand back up. but it does reset after halftime.
So in summary, you have to slide tackle a single west germany player 4 times to lower their HP to under 60 before you can knock them down. Now if you take any damage (lowering your HP from 60 to anything less) then you'll need to slide tackle to deal additional damage until the west germany player has LESS or equal HP to what you have.

Wait, I found it! It looks like I might have equipped a green ring and it brought my armor down to 0, and then I swapped one leather armor to another and it went to 99? I don't really know lol

So yes I have notes, but they aren't really organized in a way that makes sense for anyone else to read! It's mostly just comparisons of the OLD WR before I ran the game, the old TAS, what they did, timing of strats they each used and which ones I would do + any new ones. And its mostly just like a disorganized spreadsheet and shorthand/abbreviations for things that probably wouldn't make sense for others to read.
Oh gosh this run was so long ago I'm not sure if I will remember all of the values. I could type up my old notes but I might not be able to answer all of the questions anymore!
Where should I post? I have notes with the values of everything I tested back then, but here is a quick summary:
Each time you Level up, you get more HP and deal slightly more damage. Also the knife item also increases the damage you can do. To Level up, its just collecting points by either killing enemies, or collecting star items. I watched the OLD TAS and OLD WR for what they did, and I analyzed that there was a more optimal way of doing both collecting points and which knives to get.
Example, the OLD WR collected a knife in level 1, but it wastes time to go get it, so I didn't, even though having the knife kills the boss slightly quicker, it wasnt worth the time wasted to get that knife. But i did level up to 3 pretty optimally, where the OLD WR was only at level 2, but did have 1 knife upgrade. So I optimized what enemies exactly to kill to maximize points, minimize time spent killing them, etc. on each stage.

3 years late... So I HAVE come across a glitch, but not a useful glitch lol. It's been a year or so since I played this game, but if my memory is correct, basically if you pause the game and then press unpause + some other button, the whole game freezes and crashes lol. So.. yeah don't pause. [But this might only be on the Switch version I have and maybe doesnt crash on PC?]
Hello! I don't run this game, but I was actually playing casual with a friend of mine, and I accidentally did the (underflow) glitch to get 99 Armor! After checking the speedruns, looks like runners have been doing it with a bow swap, but I didn't do it with a bow. I just put on a leather armor. Just wanted to share incase this method may be faster or easier or something?

Yeah beartank is overpowered. However for the New Game category, when beartank isn't available, I'm not sure if the other characters matter. I think they have slightly differing stats
yeah emulator always has input lag, thats just what it is.
This speedrun is entirely based on lag reduction meaning lag frames occurring in the game due to amount of sprites on the screen. The lag isn't always noticeable, but with lots of things on screen its SUPER slowed down. And it's the weirdest thing, but EVERY thing on the screen slows the timer down a bit. And yes i don't know how the timer is affected on emulator compared to console exactly.
To be honest I have no idea which emulator's should be "allowed." The entire run is lag reduction, and I'm not familiar with how emulators handle lag. I figured it would be best to just have them as a separate category/variable or something. The run is literally ~2 hours of lag management lol.
Maybe someone else can provide some more information on lag differences between Emulator(s) and console? Or better yet, specifically with this game!
And the player lineup, yes certain players have minor differences. There are minor differences in Speed and HP for all teams. USA is different. Most GameFaqs don't know about the HP differences and values, that was RAM research I did on my own. I should probably post some guide about that. HP is critical to getting an immediate kill on the USA or Argentina match, and shortening West Germany match.
You can pick any team and get the same HP values! There's a lot to explain about HP, too much for one post :P

Do you think there should be some separate category for my stupid run that attempted to use handknife? There was a few screens that were impossible because he can't pick up an item LOL. its so weird that you can use many secret characters and lots of them are not able to pass through the game
