Actually more interesting than 90% of the suggestions I have seen here ...

The routing would at least have the unique question of which 1ups you get along the way. The stars will also be different as you have to enter/unlock some rooms anyway that would not be opened in 16 Stars.

Not too sure, but could be a decent one.

This has been proposed MULTIPLE times already and basically most people found it pointless as far as I can remember. This would basically just be "0/1 Star - easy mode".

Also, the only other category extension that REQUIRES a gameshark code to be used is Nonstop, which does not change anything about movement, just the routing of the star collection because you are not thrown out of the level. All other category extensions can be played without any codes if you do not want to use them or do not have a gameshark, and nonstop is a thing because it requires some new routing and decision making.

BLJ anywhere does not really add anything interesting regarding routing or gameplay, except for allowing lower skilled players to experience a sub 10 minute run. Nothing wrong with doing this for fun, but I do not think it should get an own category extension.

Also please put suggestions like this one in the category extensions forum in the future, this does not belong in the main category forum.

Cannonless on the switch works pretty much as it does on any other platform as far as I know. There are plenty tutorials out there.

GermanyCelediev4 years ago

Well even if it would be possible on the vanilla version (which i doubt) this would most likely be slower AND harder to pull off, therefore causing it to be useless for speedrunning. Looks pretty funny, though.

Yeah, Livesplit is what most people use. I'd definatly recommend it. Can be used for any game.

Well ... all signs and Mariocam-RTA pose unique routing and movement challenges.

For your category idea it is:

  • Start like you would a normal 16 Star run
  • do a basement RTA for 70 Stars plus one extra
  • finish like you would a normal 16 Star run

So please understand that there are reasons people are interested in above mentioned categories but not yours.

Noone will prevent you from running whatever selfimagined categories you like, though, and IF by doing that you can form a community that wants this to be a thing, come back and post your idea again, but please in the "category extensions" forum, where this would belong, if possible with a video of an example run.

If I remember correctly this category was already suggested. Also if you yourself think it is a stupid idea, why would you suggest it?

Well, this thread is 3 weeks old and basically half a person has shown interest in this. I'd say interest is quite low.

Too low to warrent it getting it's own category on the category extensions board at least. If you wanna run this just go for it.

Concerning your point about 16 Star No LBLJ being a thing: I am not too familiar with the SM64 history, but it is either a legacy category (if LBLJ was found after 16 Stars was already a thing) or it is to give runners who need a break from LBLJ (which is a trick that can become really frustrating, resetting over and over again right after watching the intro for a whole minute) a way to run a short category and still compete about something.

Well the benq website tells me it has a response time of 5ms.

I'd personally suggest you try out the options you already have before modifying your setup. If you have the option to choose between a tv and a pc monitor maybe try out which one works best for you.

It sounds like you are just starting off, so I'd say just go with what you already have. If over time you get to a point where you can feel that the input delay is hurting your gameplay significantly that is the moment you can think about getting a CRT (or a faster digital monitor).

Also just in case you do not already have an N64: There is no shame in starting to speedrun on emulator. plenty of good runners started on EMU and only switched to N64 later.

There are only 2 negatives about LED TVs: input delay and maybe slightly decreased graphics quality.

From my experience, N64 games look a bit cleaner on CRT TVs. As long as that does not distract you, it has no impact on the runs.

Input delay may vary from TV to TV, as it depends on how quickly your TV converts the analog input signal into a digital output signal and how fast it then displays said signal. Some TVs have a "gaming mode" that can lower the input delay but might also lead to slightly worse graphics. You should definatly look up if your TV has this function. maybe some PC monitors can work with a low input delay as well? Don't know how compatible that is.

@Yoshiabel First of all it would be nice if you could stick to the english language, especially in a discussion that was started in english. Some people might consider it very rude to just switch languages within one discussion.

For those who do not understand spanish: this is what a translation software I used translated his answer to: "I only know that a way was discovered to skip the infinite stairs in 3d all stars"

So to address what Yoshiabel actually said: Just because a way is discovered that does not make that way humanly possible or even RTA viable. The only strat I know that builds up enough speed to skip the endless staircase uses a large number of 1st frame wallkicks. As that is frame perfect, you have 1/30 of a second for each wallkick. Performing that while going relatively normal speeds is already difficult to do once, which is why islandhop is something not recommended for beginners. When going high speeds and having to press faster and faster, getting the perfect timing for a wallkick becomes harder and harder. The Endless staircase skip I know of takes about 120 to 140 first frame wallkicks. Let's be VERY generous and say 100 wallkicks. This means you now have to do 100 first frame wallkicks in a row. Let's calculate with an average chance of 95% to hit each wallkick, which sound pretty generous to me as we are also factoring in the insanely fast moving ones with weird camera angles to deal with. This now gets us to a 0,6% likelyhood of success. So even if we stacked all the odds in favour of the player we would be at 1 attempt out of 167 working, without having factored in the insanity of also managing the camera properly during all of this, having to hit the perfect angle at the start of all of this and also stacking the odds for hitting 1st frame wallkicks at high speeds quite far in favour of the player in my eyes. Also this took the TAS over 40 seconds. Keeping focused for 40 seconds as a human without being distracted once is pretty hard to do. Taking realistic odds and factoring everything in we are EASILY under 1 in 10k or even 1 in 100k attempts working. And I do not even know if THAT is still generous, factoring in human weaknesses such as tilting and stuff. And those might be the odds for someone who already practiced this specific trick. If I'd have to guess I would even say it is completely humanly impossible to pull that one off. As long as there is no new strat found to bypass the endless staircase (and for lower categories also the earlier Star Doors), 31/16/1/0 Stars is completely off limits.

Thing is as soon as you go through the basement key door, mips unloads. If you would pass that door without walking through the regular way, there would be a black void.

EDIT: This is because walking through the key doors triggers basement/lobby/upstairs loading. This is the same reason you cannot get upstairs with LBLJ on the original version of the game: You could pass the key door, but there is only black void, as upstairs does not load as long as you do not pass through it the regular way. This is why even for TAS 1 key is the fastest possible way to beat the game as long as ACE is not discovered in SM64

WiiU has way more input lag as far as I know. This means the time between an input and the on-screen output is longer. With a smaller input lag you can react faster if something does not go according to plan. This is why most VC runners prefer the WiiVC.

GermanyCelediev4 years ago

Extension does not mean nobody cares about it. If nobody would care, it would not get on the leaderboards. A category extension is more like setting an unconventional goal that needs to be accomplished, not neccessarily beating the game asap at "100%", "any %" or "any% no xyz glitches".

So instead of just doing singlestar movement for bombclip you have to watch the intro and lakitu skip before doing singlestar bombclip movement? nah, not interested.

Would this not just be considered EMU? Why do we need an extra category for this?

@LukeSaward The Nintendo Switch is an accepted platform now in category extensions, so the request is fine.

current hardware vs. almost 25 year old hardware. The answer should be obvious.
