How to play original versions of Undertale?

In properties you can choose to play version 1.00 or 1.01 and i was trying to do version 1.00 but every single time I install it, it only gives me the .exe file and nothing else. None of the sound files, and not the data.win file either. Is there any way to fix this? (I'm on Windows)

Nevermind, i figured out that I was supposed to extract it using 7zip

it's also better to play on 1.001 rather than 1.0, I'm not quite sure why, but 1.001 Linux or Mac is the best version for old patch runs

I believe that 1.001 Linux has a certain version of gamemaker that allows Mad Dummy Skip through the persistence glitch to be possible.

I know why the Linux version specifically is better, im just nkt sure about 1.001

1.0 only has a windows version, and it's typically considered the 2nd worst version to play on for most categories. The only exception is low%, where 1.0 has a unique glitch that can skip a phase in Undyne and saves a decent bit of time, making it the fastest. The original input handling treated Z and Enter as the same key, and likewise for X and Shift, though if you input Z->Enter or Enter->Z a frame apart from each other without holding both for even a single frame, both inputs would count, which is the second best input type of all the versions.

1.001 has a windows version, a linux version, and (iirc) 2 mac versions. The original windows version is the worst version to play on, as a few small 1.0 exclusive timesaves were patched, and it still has the same input types. MDS is not possible on windows 1.001! However, afterwards, the linux and mac versions were released, and (again iirc) because of an update to gamemaker, the battle alarms that are used for the mad dummy are slightly different then the previous windows versions, and that change allows for mad dummy skip to be possible. The original mac version has this skip, but still has the 1.0 input handling, so unless you don't have any other option, that's the best you have. The 2nd mac version and the linux version of 1.001 have an improved input handling system, where Z and Enter are distinct keys that happen to perform the same action, and same with X and Shift. So, you can hold down Z, and press enter while still holding down Z, and both inputs would register (and vice versa; and same with X and Shift), meaning that a lot of the game feels smoother to play, especially punch card text overflows which are a bit more lenient, and mashing feels smoother too. For glitched categories, these are considered the best versions to play on outright, and are the best option for glitchless 1.0-1.001 categories. The reason the linux version is far more prevalant is because it's portable to windows, as the game.unx file that stores the game data functions identically to a data.win, so as long as you have a runner (the .exe file) to run the data file, you can just rename game.unx to data.win and you're now playing the windows version. I don't think the mac version is portable in this same way, and even if it was the linux version is relatively easy to get on windows.

Briefly: 1.02+ versions are separated because they have a major pro and a major con. The biggest pro is that they feature the japanese language, which makes unskippable text progress faster. The biggest con is that they have the wonkiest input handling, where Z and Enter are truly considered the exact same key, thus you need at least one frame of not holding either before you can press the other. This changes a large amount of the game, as text overflows (and by extension, MDS and jetpack skip) are impossible* to produce, and mashing is a lot more awkward overall.

*AFAIK the ps4 and xbox versions have overflows, because the console menu's pause the game but the input handling isn't quite paused the same and it allows for pressing the same key in 2 consecutive in game frames and registering them both as the same, but no one runs either version much at all.
