Timing starts as soon as you move in the first level and ends as soon as the end screen is fully visible.

Magic stars need to be collected throughout the game for the final boss in level 9. ENTER is the so called panic button, which throws stars into every direction. Apart from being necessary in level 9 and refilling health it is also used to beat level 8 a good amount faster. Until level 9 you are free to use the panic button four times and you will still be able to finish the game with your sword. Note that going into a level with low health also results in a longer loading screen as health needs to be replenished.
