Adding Splits / Timer to a video

Hey there!

i recently tried to speedrun, and decided to record my gameplay via the recording option from Retroarch. Worked fine!

I also used Livesplit to record my times to see my progression during the runs.

Now I've got a run that I'd like to upload to youtube. The problem is, I have the video and the splits seperately. I'm using windows 7 and I'd like to somehow get those 2 together so the video would be a little more user-friendly.

I guess the only way is to let the video run and record the splits again live, as they have already be done.

Is there some way to get this done without too much of a hassle? :) (As I said, still on windows 7 and my laptop is kinda old too, so I don't have that many options I guess.)

In the future, you might want to consider using a program like OBS Studio so you can record both inputs onto a single video file. As for now, you might want to install a video editing program and combine the videos or something like that.

@Quivico: That's true, however my laptop is kinda old and for now I would be happy if I could find a solution for a few easy videos.

I still need to record the splits/splitting somehow...

I guess it's not that easy anyway... If nothing else helps, I would be happy if I could at least add a timer to the video.

I believe most video editing programs have the ability for you to add a timer to the video. I know for a fact Sony Vegas can do it.

Alternatively, you can open your video in something like VLC, open a timer program like LiveSplit, and use OBS to capture both sources. Then you can hot-key LiveSplit to start with the same key press as VLC. That way you can start your timer and your video at the same time and now you can record a video of both the recording playback and the timer at once.

And like Quivico said, I would use OBS going forward to record all of your runs if possible. If you’re not able to get the recordings to your PC in real time and you need to rely on downloading them to your PC after the fact (like if you stream from the PS4/XBoxOne Twitch app) then this video editing method is the easiest one I can recommend.

Alright, little update:

I tried OBS classic (works for windows 7), but it didnt work too well. the video lagged/stuttered as my notebook isnt strong enough.

I tried bandicam, which worked perfectly. I could choose the livesplit window (exactly cropped), however I noticed that after 10 mins it stopped recording as the free version only allows 10 mins max^^

If your computer isn’t strong enough to run OBS, then your only remaining option is to lower the quality of the video settings in OBS. Use a lower bitrate and record at something like 480p. If you STILL can use OBS at that point, then unfortunately, without buying a new laptop, you don’t have many more options and I wouldn’t recommend adding a timer to the video.

@timmiluvus: thats what I thought. However, I didnt have any problems with bandycam, it recorded everything the way I wanted without any problems. However, the free version only lets you do 10 minute recordings...

Do you guys know any free alternatives to bandicam/OBS, that work on windows 7 and let you capture specific windows?

@retrohunter06 While I don't know and use anything else besides OBS, maybe something in https://www.speedrun.com/resources (under Streaming software or Video capture software) might help?

Yeah probably not a good idea to recommend using software you didn't pay for (it's actually against the site rules).
