Hi I made a post in Introductions a week ago looking to get some questions answered. Hopefully here is okay.
On December 15th Im running 12ish hour Charity stream and my goal is to run multiple different FMV games in that time. These games are not currently listed but I saw similar games on here. I think it would be a neat thing to do in one big push and the only thing that matters after everything is done is that we helped provide for some children in need.
That being said I have some questions that while I tried to search and figure out there was some grey area that I felt I'd be more comfortable asking directly.
#1: Is there any rules against requesting these multiple FMV games for this purpose?
#2: Is an on screen timer required? (I saw a thread saying it was up to mod discretion but as this is for charity I wanted to be 100% certain)
#3: Regardless of how #2 plays out, is there any concern with swapping stream scenes during one of the runs to thank people for donating or taking restroom breaks? I wouldnt want to accidentally nullify the legitimacy of a run or all of them due to this. I know the rules want the run submitted in its entirety but Im not sure how visual interruptions would be viewed. (or would it be required that if I switch scenes that at least a small window of the game remain visible to confirm nothing illicit occurs)
#4: I know it says that uploading streams is fine for submissions but I'd assume in this specific case that I'd need to edit each game down to its own stand alone video right?
#5: Seriously I just hope Im not stepping on anyone's toes here, I legitimately respect the heck out of the skill and dedication the speed run community has for what yall do. I sincerely wouldnt want to upset anyone, I just really want to raise money for kids while trying something new that I otherwise dont have the skill to pull off.
Thank you so much for your time, Jordan
1: It's worth noting that games that are already on the site don't necessarily establish precedent, the game request criteria has changed a lot over the years. I don't think FMV games would be accepted anymore, but go over the game request rules if you want to be sure.
That aside, when you request a game, you're asking speedrun.com to create and maintain a leaderboard for it forever. There's nothing inherently wrong with doing that in this case, but also, if it's a one and done thing for you and you don't intend to run the games ever again or maintain the leaderboards beyond putting your initial run up there, and as far as you know no one else is planning to run it, it might just be easier for everyone to not bother.
2: Timer on screen is generally not required unless the game needs a load-remover or something, but it does indeed come down to the rules for each game.
3: Every game has its own standards for video proof and such, so for games that aren't already on the site you have to use your own judgement. That said I personally would strongly recommend not fully cutting away from the game. You can switch scenes for the sake of your stream, but try to have the game itself in all your scenes, even if it's smaller or jammed in the corner or something that's better than it being gone entirely.
4: Separate videos is generally best, but you can also just post one video with timestamps if you can't/won't do that.
Thank you very much for the response, I will just have to submit and hope for the best. There is at least one of the FMVs that has potential for true racing as rng changes item locations and (you are trying to find) the killer each seed.
Hi, I totally forgot to update this post (and I will update the other to match)
After thinking through the advice I couldnt in good conscience ask people to donate under the premise of speedruning if there wasn't a high likelihood of successful acceptance. Didnt want it to feel dishonest
I will instead be doing a OHKO Challenge Run of Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu and then at a later date be doing a speedrun attempt at Murderous Muses and just cross our fingers on that one. Please feel free to still join and enjoy yourselves and potentially donate towards helping the kids!
Odd choice. Even if the games weren't accepted, it doesn't really matter. Speedrun.com isn't an official entity that dictates what is and isn't real speedrunning, it's just a centralized location for leaderboards, resources, etc. The site's reasons for not accepting certain games are just practical/procedural reasons. As long as you are genuinely trying to play the game fast, you are doing real speedrunning, that's all there is to it.
