unhacked 3DS to streaming without a hardware mod

This is a quick guide on everything you need to do to get set up to stream your Cave Story 3D - and most other 3DS game - gameplay and speedruns. All you need is either a New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, or New Nintendo 2DS XL. It is possible to stream on original 3DS models without the use of a hardware mod through HorizonMod, however the game will experience a large amount of slowdown. This option is allowed, however this guide will not cover it currently (i would like to be able to test it myself to make sure it causes no issues before i recommend it to people).

Note that if you're using Emulator, none of this applies to you, as of course you can just capture the Emulation window.

  1. EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE

To stream your gameplay, you will require the following:

  • a copy of Cave Story 3D. you may install this digitally as well, however this guide does not cover this as the game was not officially released digitally.
  • any New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, or New Nintendo 2DS XL
    • 3DS users ONLY, you will need a small phillips screwdriver as the SD card slot is under the back plate
  • any size micro SD card, though bigger is obviously better and going below 2GB is a bad idea. the 3DS/2DS unless bought used should come with one.
  • a 3.5mm line-in cable. you can usually find these very cheaply or order them online, just be sure that it's somewhat decent quality as poor quality ones will cause a lot of noise (though this is correctable).
    • if your computer does not have any kind of 3.5mm microphone or line-in port, you will need to purchase some kind of solution to receive it. there are plenty of USB solutions available.
  • wireless internet with a security that the 3DS can connect to, with preferably a wired connection for the computer you will be capturing with. a wireless connection will result in much less stability but can still work fine.
  • optional any controller that can be read by your computer with a turbo function, not required for streaming but will make your time speedrunning much better

Step 1: boot9strap

To begin with, follow this guide if your 3DS does not have luma custom firmware: https://3ds.hacks.guide/

This will help you set up your system to use custom firmware and is required for all software mod solutions. I will be waiting right here when you are finished.

Step 2: BootNTR Selector and you

You should have a program called FBI installed on your system after installing custom firmware. Launch this. Ensure in the top right corner your system is connected to your internet.

Select "Remote Install" -> "Manually enter URLs" -> Scan QR Code -> scan the following code: https://amberfig.keybase.pub/3dsresources/BOOTNTRSELECTOR.png

Yes to installing, once done you may close FBI.

You may now start the software you just installed, albeit you do not yet have the client software.

Some notes about the software: - sometimes BootNTR will just crash. This is normal, it just means that something happened to conflict with it starting and is fairly rare. Just start the system again and run it. - 3.6 is the only version with streaming support, so use that one. - closing your system to sleep mode will cause it to crash, requiring a long press of the power to shut it off. - DS mode and GBA mode games completely unload the 3DS firmware and thus cannot be used with NTR

Step 3: The client-side computer stuff LINUX USERS (WINDOWS USERS: SCROLL DOWN) if you are debian based, simply run: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:joenosie/3ds sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install cutentr if you are not debian based, you will need to compile from source. repo at: https://gitlab.com/BoltsJ/cuteNTR/tree/master

WINDOWS USERS
Download Snickerstream and extract it to a folder
		https://github.com/RattletraPM/Snickerstream/releases

ALL USERS
If you wish to use Input redirection to a controller, download the Luma Input Redirection client and extract it to a folder
		https://github.com/gbrown5/InputRedirectionClient-Qt/releases
			version 3.0
Run either Snickerstream or CuteNTR depending on OS. Input your 3DS's IP address (you can check this by pressing L + down + select to open luma, Debugger options -> enable debugger, and it will appear in the top right corner), and click connect. It should just work provided NTR is running and your computer can get a stable connection. If your 3DS screens flash a colour for a brief moment, it has started the streaming software on the system.

If you wish to use a controller, open the input redirection client. You can set up what buttons you are using on your controller in settings, and actually set up hotkeys to points on the touch screen - i highly recommend setting a button to the location of the INV icon. Again, so long as you get a stable connection to your system, this should just work, however i have noticed this struggles when not connected to a wired connection with your computer.

You should now have capturable video. Now, one final step is the audio. You should have obs studio already installed, however if you do not please go do so and set it up. Once you are done, come back.

Plug one end of your line-in cable to the 3DS headphone jack. Plug the other end to your line-in or microphone jack - either should work. In OBS, open settings, and select Audio in the left panel. Choose an unused mic/aux audio option, and select your 3DS. If you're not sure, you can come back and adjust this in a moment.

In the Audio mixer, right click the gear for your new audio source you just created and select advance audio properties. Open a game or do anything on your 3DS and turn up the volume so that it is making sound, and turn audio monitoring to Monitor and Output for it. If you don't hear your system, go back to the audio settings and find it, it will be outputting audio.

That's it. Simple and easy to do. If you are having issues that aren't related to the initial custom firmware install, please feel free to message me in most places.
