The Curse of Monkey Island Any% Mega-Monkey Speedrun Route Guide
Preface
Hello and welcome to this guide for speedrunning The Curse of Monkey Island! This guide will take you step-by-step through the current fastest route through the game. It includes details on how to perform the essential, and non-essential tricks, as well as the techniques and thought processes that go into speedrunning this game at the highest level. Curse is still a tricky game and there are a lot of fine details that are difficult to explain in a text format, and some that must be “felt out” to really understand. With that in mind, I’ve tried to make this guide as beginner friendly and detail-packed as I can. If anything is unclear, or if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Speedy Adventures Discord server where I, or one of the other knowledgeable folks over there, will be happy to help.
On with the run!

Let’s Talk About Insult Swordfighting
We all love to wave our swords around like feather dusters, but this particular iteration of insult swordfighting raises some questions and challenges for us as speedrunners. I’m going to try and answer those questions, as well as provide the details necessary to make what can seem to be a daunting portion of the game more manageable.
Song Skip
What is Song Skip?
In non-English versions of the game, the player is able to SKIP the cutscene of the crew singing “A Pirate I Was Meant To Be”, which saves quite a bit of time. This is disabled in the English version meaning, under normal circumstances, if you want to play the game in English, you have to sit through the whole song. A method was discovered by LeoLitz through which the player can run the game in another language, but still see and hear English text and audio. This method is what we call “Song Skip”.
How do I do Song Skip?
For a video explanation watch LeoLitz’s guide here:
Here’s a quick text summary of the process:
- Install Curse in English
- Navigate to the directory “.../The Curse of Monkey Island/ScummVM/monkey3/”
- Copy the RESOURCE folder and paste it in another location, doesn’t matter where.
- Reinstall Curse in any other language
- Open ScummVM
- Use the “Add Game…” option in ScummVM and choose the same monkey3 folder you navigated to earlier
- Make any changes to keybinds or game settings NOW. If you open the Game Settings in ScummVM after finishing this process, you will have to start over.
- Take the RESOURCE folder you copied earlier, and drop it in the monkey3 folder
- Replace the RESOURCE folder that’s in there already
- Done! If you’re successful, you should see the main menu in English text that looks different from the script you would normally see.
That seems like a lot/I’m morally opposed to altering game files. Do I have to?
Well, no, you don’t. If you find that process overwhelming or difficult, you can always learn the rest of the speedrun and come back later to figure it out when you really want to start pushing your time down. You can also ask me, or the Speedy Adventures Discord for help, we’d be happy to. If you don’t like the idea of changing the game files, or skipping the song in general, by all means enjoy the song! If you happen to speak one of the supported languages, or are willing to learn enough to play the game in one, you are more than welcome to play in those and skip the song as “intended”.
We as a speedrun community have decided to prioritize fair competition above playing in the most “originally accurate” way possible. Allowing this method of Song Skip for the English version levels the playing field for speakers of all supported languages, and lowers the barrier to entry for a large portion of the potential player base. We’ve decided that we’re not in the position to be turning off potential players by telling them they have to learn a new language if they want a chance at a competitive time.
We do this for fun, and this is the way that keeps things the most fun for the most people. If you find singing along to the song to be more fun, that’s awesome and completely valid! We just ask that you not try to diminish the achievement or fun had by others who choose to use Song Skip.
Cannonless
What is Cannonless?
Cannonless is simply using the built-in cheat of pressing Shift + V, followed by Y to instantly win the ship combat parts of the swordfighting chapter. This saves a lot of time and gets you right into the insulting action.
Isn’t that cheating?
Yes.
What if I want to do ship combat?
Feel free! May I suggest trying out a Piracy% run?
Save/Load Strats
What are Save/Load Strats?
Save/Load Strats is a term for using the built-in Quicksave and Quickload features to ensure that you get the Insult/Response that you want from a given fight. This greatly reduces the impact that RNG has on a player’s success in the swordfighting chapter. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of RNG.
How do I do Save/Load Strats?
During the initial insult-gathering phase of the chapter, Save/Load can be used like so:
- Board an enemy ship
- Pick a fight (dialogue options 1 or 2)
- SAVE (Default: Alt + [numberkey])
- CHOOSE the insult you want to learn the response for
- LOAD (Default: Ctrl +[numberkey you saved to earlier]) until the pirate gives you the desired response
- SAVE before the next round starts
- LOAD until you get a new insult
- LEAVE
In the fight with Rottingham they can be used like this:
- Board Rottingham’s ship
- SAVE
- Pick a fight
- LOAD until he gives you an insult you have a response for.
- SAVE before the next round starts
- REPEAT until you win
If you’re going for lower insult response attempts, it is recommended to make separate saves at the beginning of the Rottingham fight and for successful responses. For example: SAVE in slot 1 when you first arrive at his ship, SAVE in slot 2 when you get your first successful response, and SAVE over slot 2 for every subsequent success. This allows you to “reset” Rottingham’s insult choices if you think you got a bad roll, and also checkpoint your way through the fight.
Seems like cheating again… Why should I?
The RNG is absolutely brutal in this game at the highest level, even with Save/Load. Utilizing Save/Load only reduces the amount of time and tedium required to arrive at your PB-paced run’s all too likely demise. That said, if you’re just starting out, I wouldn’t worry too much about Save/Load for now. Focus on learning the insults and their responses and keeping track of which ones you have. You can come back and learn Save/Load when you want to start optimizing your insult swordfighting.
Insults
Overview
Insult Swordfighting is all about learning various Insults and their associated Responses. During this chapter, you will fight weaker pirates several times in order to expand your arsenal of Insults and Responses in preparation for the final battle with Captain Rottingham. The goal is to learn enough Responses to counter 5 of the Insults that Rottingham chooses to throw at you during your battle. The following is an excerpt from KCAdventure’s excellent An Unnecessarily Academic Assessment of Rottingham Probabilities:
So, as you can see, the more Responses you collect, the higher your chances of defeating Rottingham. The bare minimum is 5 Responses, but that gives you an exceedingly low 2.88% chance of winning. 6 Responses gives a better, but still brutal, 12.06% chance. For this reason, it is recommended that new players collect 9+ Responses as they learn the system and the run at large.
List of Insults and Their Responses
For the purposes of this guide, Insult and Response are defined as follows:
- Insult - The offending phrase that must be “responded” to.
- Example: “Every enemy I’ve met, I’ve annihilated!”
- Response - The corresponding defensive phrase that counters a given Insult.
- Example: “With your breath, I’m sure they all suffocated.”
This chart shows every Insult, each Insult’s associated Response, and the Rottingham version of that same Insult:
Glossary
The actions required to beat the game are broken up into keywords which are defined here. I highly recommend adjusting the keybinds to ones that feel comfortable to you. This can be done through the ScummVM Game Settings, or through a program like AutoHotKey.
- BUFFER: Use the Menu Buffer technique to open the inventory while Guybrush is moving.
- CHOOSE: Select an option from a menu, usually by clicking on it.
- DIA: Choose the corresponding dialogue options in a conversation that was not initiated by TALK-ing to someone
- Example: when interrupted by Murray in the swamp on Plunder Island
- DSKIP: Skip a single line of dialogue. Also called “dot skip” or “. skip”. Often immediately followed by a full SKIP.
- Default Key: .
- Can be held down to quickly skip through multiple lines. These cases are marked with (Hold).
- ENTER: Move to a new screen.
- Default Key: Enter or Double-click
- EXAMINE: Make Guybrush look at something.
- Default Key: E
- MOVE: Make Guybrush move in a certain direction. Only really done to move the camera so you can use an ENTER, or to trigger a cutscene.
- SHOOT: Fire the cannons!
- Default Key: Left-click or Tab
- SHMOOVE: Make Guybrush move a little faster when he’s walking to the left by repeatedly clicking and resetting his walk cycle.
- SKIP: Skip through a scene or chunk of dialogue. Also called a “Scene Skip” or “Full Skip”.
- Default Key: Escape
- TALK: Speak to another character or otherwise use Guybrush’s mouth to interact with an item (e.g. drinking, biting, etc.).
- Default Key: T
- USE: Interact with an item or character, often used to pick up items in the world. Can also refer to using an item from your inventory on someone or something.
- Default Key: U / Left-click
Trick Index
- Andre Skip:
- Explanation: This is a very specific method of skipping through the dialogue with King Andre that allows the player to then skip the long “walk of shame” down to play cards with him.
- Execution: DSKIP each of Andre’s lines individually. At one point in the conversation Andre will gesture with his arm, tap the SKIP button one time during this animation and DSKIP through the rest of the dialogue. If successful, you should be able to choose the dialogue option “Maybe we could make a deal.” and SKIP the animation of Guybrush walking all the way down to Andre’s table.
- Example: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxtJ89ZllkLW2HoIZrjz-DPOxhpGm_zKLh?si=iqXnCn2vsQowLVef
- Menu Buffer:
- Explanation: The act of moving Guybrush towards something, then immediately opening the inventory in order to pick up an item, or combine items within the inventory.
- Execution: Left-click on whatever you want Guybrush to walk towards, then quickly open your inventory using Right-click, or your preferred inventory key.
- Example:
- Mini-Mega Skip:
- Explanation: This trick allows Guybrush to glitch into the crypt on Blood Island early in the game. This lets us get a couple of items early and saves a small amount of time later when we get to Blood Island.
- Execution/Example:
- Quick Enter:
- Explanation: There are two ways to transition from screen to screen - double-left clicking on an exit or pressing the Enter key when the mouse is over an exit. Using the Enter key is what is meant by “Quick Entering”. The ability to Quick Enter any given screen can be lost or regained in a number of ways. Knowing when you do and do not have Quick Enter is key to running the game at a high level.
- Execution: Press “Enter”. Quick Enter is mainly lost when single-clicking to interact with characters/objects or when opening the inventory. It can be regained by double clicking somewhere on the screen before attempting to Quick Enter. Verbs (EXAMINE, TALK, USE) do not cause you to lose Quick Enter.
- Walk-and-Talk:
- Explanation: Guybrush can start up a conversation with another character while walking towards another item/character.
- Execution: TALK to a character, then quickly CHOOSE an object on the screen to make Guybrush move towards it.
- Example: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxKFi1lZB7h52BH_87NYKfUoJNmmm82hVo?si=2hNLHmcqHBMMB8o3
