Defining Glitches

Look, the definition of a glitch is ambiguous.

Sure, it should be visually obvious of what a glitch is. However, for all of the speedrun communities the definition of a glitch is community-based. Lingo 2 is the successor of Lingo 1, packaged with glitches and strategies that Lingo 2 inherited from its predecessor. As such, we will be defining such glitches below.

Before we begin, what is NOT a glitch in Lingo 2?

Some things in the game we do not consider a glitch, even if it seems like it.

  • Wall Snipes - A wall snipe is where you access a panel through a wall. More specifically, it is the act of accessing a panel of which you are unable to see any parts of the panel itself. These include the receptacles that removes a letter from your keyword. If there is a wall between you and the panel and you solve the panel, that's a wall snipe. If it is blocked partially or solved at a strange angle, if you can see the blueness of the panel, it is not a wall snipe. Note that we say "access," not "solve," because you can unsolve panels, which is a major mechanic in the sequel. Granted we may beg to differ on possible edge cases, though they are rare. Wall snipes feel like they should be glitches, but we consider them not a glitch because it is an intended game mechanic in Lingo 1. Though the use case for Lingo 2 is nonexistent, to avoid ambiguity between these games, we consider them not a glitch.
  • Graveyard Access from [INSERT MAP NAME HERE] - Graveyard can be access basically anywhere except for Icarus and The Door. As long as you fall down to the bottom of the world, you will always enter Graveyard. Entering Graveyard is far from a glitch. The Great, Daedalus, even in The Unkempt are examples where you can fall down towards bottom of the world. Nevertheless, the act of getting to The Graveyard may be considered glitches depending on how it is performed. Most commonly to get to the graveyard for most maps is through a wrong warp, which it itself is a glitch (explanation below).
  • Solving a Red Panel - When you play the game, you will obviously encounter a panel that cannot be solved because it is red, indicating that you do not have the necessary required letters to solve it. However, for panels that can take in multiple solution, it is possible to solve a red panel by inputting its alternate solution. Take WANDER/WANDER in The Entry. Normally, you will need to obtain W, A, D, and E to be able to solve that panel. However, the alternative solution LUST can be used as an input to solve the panel. This will work, even when the panel is red, and you are unable to see what you are inputting at the moment.
  • Any Parkour Tricks/Early Rooftop Access - Putting this here because it is not only intended, but generally movement-based tricks are mostly considered exploits, not glitches. These include any early roof access in The Great or Daedalus (with an ambiguous one for Daedalus later in this post), Y-early (getting Y early before getting W), Owl Jump, etc. Exceptions will be noted down below in the Glitches portion of the post.
  • Early Cyan Letters - For Cyan J as an example, you can get it before getting Purple J pretty easily even without glitches. However, we agreed as a community that although it is a sequence break, it does not count as a glitch.

Glitch List (as we know of)

As the game continues, new glitches may be discovered so this list is not exhaustive.

  • Wrong Warps - A wrong warp takes advantage of a faulty system with the game's teleporters and non-Euclidean geometry. Like Lingo 1, you can wrong warp when you return to the menu checkpoint at the same time as you are entering a warp trigger. The game displaces your coordinates to give off the illusion of non-Euclidean. By returning to the return location first before displacement, you'll be teleported to the location after adding the offsets to your position. Unlike its predecessor, these can work for paintings (that doesn't warp you to a different map) or though the purple warps (or equivalent). They can only be performed in The Entry, Control Center, The Gallery, Daedalus, and The Plaza.
  • Icarus Tilting - Icarus Tilting is a glitch caused when exiting Icarus with the wrong gravity. This can cause multiple different side effects. You may fall horizontally without any end, allows you to climb walls, gets you softlock on things that should be standard voxel geometry, gets you out of bounds in places that really shouldn't like The Gallery, fly because why not, fly, yut-e-yut-e-yuh.
  • Pre-Loading - Specific to the receivers and letter collecting. When you put a purple letter into a receiver, then collect a cyan letter, the game does not actually remove that purple letter because collecting a letter by walking into one replaces one of your keys depending on your letter. In fact, both the purple and cyan letters are separate characters. Therefore, you can trick the game into thinking that a correct letter is in the receiver but also holding onto a different letter on your keyboard.
  • Early Purple Ending - For some reason, the developer of the game forgot to disable the Purple Ending if you have not typed EQUINOX into the panel in The Sun Temple. So, you can parkour on top of the hedges and grab the ending even though it is invisible. Clearly, it is a glitch with the advantage of skipping Q.

This list will be constantly updated as time progresses, but for now these are the glitches to give you information on choosing between Glitchless No Wall Snipe (GNWS) and Unrestricted.

Unconfirmed Glitches

Some of these glitches below are still ambiguous.

  • Invisible Castle Steps - In the castle in Daedalus, the intended route is for you to solve each of the colored panels all in order of the same color. There, stairs will then descend, allowing you to solve the fifth panel of that color. You are required to solve all four of the FIVE panels, granting you the warp on the throne that takes you to the top of the castle and the Orange Ending. But what if you unsolve one of the FIVE panels when near it? Well, not only does the stairs move back up, but they become invisible. We do not know if this is a glitch or not.
  • Early Daedalus Roof Access near V2 - Near V2, there are two TREE panels that must be solved in opposite sides to open the doors. There, these TREE panels move out of your way, allowing you to pass through the tiny area easily. But if you unsolve one of the TREE panels, they will teleport back. This can be exploited by unsolving one of the panels while jumping at the center of that tiny area so they teleport below you, but you are clipping inside the panels. This can allow you to jump on top of the panels and then gaining you roof access in Daedalus.
