Sorry if I was being confusing but by saying deathwarp. I mean pause and end the game which takes you to the same game over screen as if you died.

Here is full overworld map. Not sure how I want to add inside area's to it and demon's lair. I plan to add item locations on it though at some point.

Jimmie17179 years ago

I figured more deathwarps would be used in your route for NES since you move much slower. Something I didn't really look into and just assumed was that skipping hearts and getting them later with the Jawbone or Sword would be faster. Which maybe be true in some cases but probably not all.

I've also started putting together a full overworld map with the actual game screens. As of right now I have Park, Downtown, Slums, and Prison. I'll post it once I finish it. Then eventually I'll add in the inside areas as part of it I think.

So the sword is not the trigger for the Secret area by the Belt for the 150 Dove drop. I just tried getting all pieces of armor and items and it's still locked.

This is the initial 100% Route that I have come up with. I'm sure there are plenty of things to change but it's something to start with at least.

Jimmie17179 years ago

Turns out there's 4th Pear as well. It's in the Shipyard (3,C) shortcut.

I also just made an Overworld Map, let me know if I'm missing anything.

Jimmie17179 years ago

I also found a test/debug room now. I don't see a way to get into it without cheats though.

Jimmie17179 years ago

Are there more secret rooms with dove drops in them? I got a total of 1,440 needed for 100%. Then there's the 150 and 255 dove drops so that takes it down to 1,035.

Or maybe the prices lower on NES?

Jimmie17179 years ago

I don't think it's possible to get to but at the Slums (D,2) there is a room that has a key. Along the bottom of the room with the key in it there is an entire line of 16 keys just OoB that you can't see.

I wonder if there is a place with doves like this and if it's possible to get to them.

Edit: Seems most all the shops have a line of 16 doves just under them.

Jimmie17179 years ago

I used cheats to move myself to the edge of screens so that I could move to the next one and just put them all together.

Jimmie17179 years ago

Ok here is a map of the rooms that would be possible to get to.

Note that 2 of the areas along the bottom are screwed up. They are the B,7 area from the overworld map but with the incorrect sprite sheet or whatever. You can enter the cave like normal to fight the boss but you cant use the downward exit that would normally be there. Also note that 4,3 on this image is Houses to Prison shortcut.

I was messing around with this in other places and I ended up finding another secret room that has a 150 dove drop in it. I'm not sure what actually unlocks the area though. It's by the first boss there is a hidden path off to the side. Vials didn't work to reveal it so I loaded a different savestate I had that was more progressed through the game and the path was just open on it. So it might have to do with obtaining one of the pieces of armor? See here

I found a way to move screens where you shouldn't be able to. Here is a video of it. This is on Genesis and I haven't tested others yet but I assume it would work on others.

I haven't tested/looked for other places this could be done and where they go so I'll update this once I mess around with it more.

Jimmie17179 years ago

I only know of 3 Bananas. Prison (7,0), Hotels (3,9), and Beach (D,C). Where is the forth at? or maybe that just a typo?

Jimmie17179 years ago

I didn't really pay any attention at first but it seems that the Genesis and Gameboy versions were released last in 1994 where as the NES was in 1992 and PC in 1993. It's kinda funny how in the NES, PC, and GB versions the health is checked correctly but in the Genesis it isn't.

Another thing to bring up is that should there be separate leaderboards by platform? From what I've seen they all seem the same except that the Genesis version has sprinting which lets you move twice as fast. Other than that I don't really see any differences as far as the game goes. Running the PC version at the proper speed could be an issue though I suppose.

Jimmie17179 years ago

I don't see this ever getting added here as an official category. But maybe it could be something to consider adding to SpeedRunTools. which has categories for just about everything.

Jimmie17179 years ago

I'm considering doing at least one 100% run of this game. But after doing the math it seems a total of 1,480 doves will be needed to buy all the fruit and items. I don't really see a good place to farm these other than off the first boss but the max you can hold at once is 255. There are several shortcuts as well as the railroad to quickly travel across the world so routing it could be interesting.

I noticed that there are several areas in the shipyard that seem to just give you vials as long as you are in the area. I'm not sure why? I looked for areas that possibly could give doves like this too but didn't find any. It doesn't seem like a glitch but who knows. Maybe somewhere it's hinted at by an npc.

Edit: Seems there's a secret room in the Lost at Sea region that gives full doves/vials. But it can only be used once.

Here is an initial route I made.

Is there a reason only the NES version is listed? This game was also released for PC and Sega Genesis. I've done a few runs on Genesis. My best time as of this post is a 12:56, video here

I guess I should note that my run was done on console. When looking around for roms to play on emulator and mess around I only ever came a cross roms that seem to be 1.0. The cart I bought also ended up being 1.0 so my guess is that there is only a 1.0 version for the Genesis.

So about that Mission 1 cutscene not affecting runs if we switch to in-game time...

With seeing that Signa currently has a 5:14 on mission 1 I figured it should be investigated. I mentioned it Geo's chat a few days ago and since I'm lazy he beat me to looking at it. Geo seemed to think that the in game clock runs during it on english but not japanese. I looked at the memory on dolphin and it does in fact run during it. Here is a video I made even showing that the time has gone up 10 seconds from before to after.

I've tried looking for japanese iso's in the past and never found any. So until someone that has a copy tests it we don't know for sure that it doesn't run during that cutscene on japanese yet.

Edit: Looks like it does run during the cutscene on japanese as well. Video by Signa showing it on the japanese version.

I still need to look more into Signa's 5:14. Unless it was just my imagination it seemed like the fade out for the cutscene was faster on japanese, but like I said I still need to look into it more.

Jimmie17179 years ago

I was going through runs on the leaderboard and getting the in-game times. If you want to see them go here.

Jimmie17179 years ago

Something I forgot to mention is pausing. With the use of in-game time a player could pause the game, leave, and then come back. There would need to be some kind of rule to ban that I think.

Not that it is necessary but when starting out I always pause buffered the clip on Fichina. It just made it way easier to get. Would a strat like that still be allowed? As far as I'm aware it doesn't manipulate the in-game timer but who knows.

Jimmie17179 years ago

I think it should be part of the rule. I wouldn't want to ban a run just because some one failed a trick/glitch, that would be stupid in my opinion.
