I couldn't find any videos explaining how the roll jump mechanic worked. I happened to watch an SGDQ video where some runners explained it here:

and learned how to do it there. Its a pretty simple trick but as a newcomer I had no idea how to do it. Hope this can help, I'd love to see more people speed run this game.
