SSMT guide

SSMTs, or "straight-stretched mini-turbos" are most commonly used as a time trial strat in MK7 to save about .05 seconds per successful SSMTs. However SSMTs are also useful in online races or speedruns as a method of quicker recovery after being hit by an item. I made this guide for new players to learn how to perform it :)

Chapter 1: Neutral Hop Drifting

In order to be able to do SSMTs you will first have to master neutral hop drifting. As some of you may know, turning while hopping to start a drift is quite huge waste of time in itself, and because proper SSMTs are only doable with neutral hop drifting, its best to learn that first :P

Whenever you hop to start a drift, you have to make no steering inputs until you are very close to touching the ground, and only then you can start steering. Neutral hop drifting also significantly shortens the super mini turbo charge timer, so that'll help you a lot as well.

Chapter 2: The SSMT itself

Once you've mastered neutral hop drifting, you can start learning SSMTs. First, you'll need to start a neutral hop drift during a straight line. Then, hold down the direction you're going to for a short while. Release and hop again immidiately after charging a mini turbo to realign properly. The time save window is quite small with SSMTs. so you'll need to practice them a lot before you can do them consistently.

Chapter 3: When to perform SSMTs

SSMTs are a technique you should mostly perform on tracks with long wide straight lines to get the most out of them. Best track to practice this kind of technique is most definitely Luigi Raceway. Although you should also do SSMTs whenever you get hit by something to save 0.5-1.0 seconds depending on character

Chapter 4: Extra

SSMTs are a technique that can only be performed using wheels with low handling, like monsters, slicks, etc. due to SSMTs being impossible on high steering wheels that would likely steer too much before charging up a SSMT.

Another useful thing to do with neutral hop drifts are hop alignments, which are realigning your vehicle with little to no speed loss compared to just steering.

thx for reading :)
