Couple of Questions

(1). How do you make it skip through the text so fast? I'm clicking but it goes nowhere near as fast as the WR.

(2). I'm having a heck of a time getting Robin to move from screen to screen in the forest. I have to click basically all the way at the very edge of the screen. Is there a way around this? The WR moves so quickly across screens.

(3). What causes the glitch of the King thinking Marian is dead at the end? Is it just based on Score / Ransom money raised?

Great questions! I imagine that it has to do with the emulator / VM you're using.

Like many other adventure game speedrunners, I'm using a community-made fork of ScummVM called UrQuan's ScummVM. It runs closer to a native DOS environment, is a lot smoother than normal ScummVM or DOSBox, and is faster.

You can grab it here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1DhD9QwcOuUMATDCo1TIZMO3hpC1MfvZk

If you get a "0xc000007b error" when trying to run it, you may need to install .NET Framework and/or Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package.

Once you have that running, add the game directory, click on Edit Game... -> Engine, and then uncheck "Enable speed throttling."

Also, I found that if I run version 1.1 of Longbow unthrottled, Robin will never be able to catch the Pixie. Running version 1.0 fixes the problem. DM me if you can't find 1.0 by Googling.

As for the edge, yes, you need to click on the very edge of the screen. CTRL-M in ScummVM will lock your cursor to the screen so you're not accidentally clicking outside the window.

Finally, I'm not sure exactly how the end bug works, but I assume it's what you wrote: the devs couldn't imagine how you could get that few points / ransom / men without letting Marian die.

I bought it from GoG, referred from Christy Marx's website. It appears to be using scummvm to launch. I haven't had any errors in playing. I didn't have any trouble with the pixie.

Well, it took a few tries, but it was my own error, not the game. First run last night was over 40 minutes. I thought "hide" would substitute for "fur" and died to the tree. Ouch. Fortunately I had saved before the pixie.

Right, you won't have any trouble with the pixie in the GOG distribution. That's version 1.1, running in standard ScummVM.

The problem comes when you try to run 1.1 with UrQuan's ScummVM with the speed throttling disabled (or, at least, it did for me).

It's the ransom. I can confirm that it you do all the nice events and get everyone on your side, but don't raise a single penny, you get the noose.

If you get any amount, even the 700 from Puck, then you live. Next I want to try being a jerk to everyone and getting 700 to see if you live then.

I plan on cataloging every possible choice to see the outcomes. Not really applicable for speed running, unless we had things like "get best ending" or "survive trial".

That's great to know! I was always curious.

Thnx for the post. I was also curious why my version seemed to run slower than yours. Also, concerning the possible outcomes, I already did some checks if you are interested as I wanted to do something akin to Any% Best Ending someday.

I am very interested. I haven't had time to continue research.

I have not tested everything for time reasons and the fact that I was only interested in the best ending, but from what I tested, the endings are a combination of money gained and how nice you are or not.

As of now, to get the best ending, just save everybody on the road and be nice to the beggar and jeweller as well as amass the max amount of money being 65300 (I think). Doing should give the best ending while still cutting a significant portion of the game compared to 100%. Of course, this is a really rough sketch, but this is what I am currently testing when not learning any% (which the new engine is proving a challenge at the pixie section :P ).

At first, I wanted to check if the point counts was influencing anything as the manual is not clear on what influence the endings, but it does not seems to influence anything, but further testing will be required once I am sure of how to trigger each endings.

The pixie cannot be caught on 1.1 with speed throttling off. As far as we can tell anyway. He just runs right through it.

You need 1.0 to pass. Google it, I found it on some abandonware site. Which I would feel bad about, but I did own the game long ago on floppy and I bought it again on GoG, so I guess it's ok.

I agree with your research as well.
