How to Switch FPS to 30 for PC

The config file will be found here:

Documents\Square Enix\Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY\BmGame\Config\UserEngine.ini
```

Add the following two lines in at the bottom of the file:

[Engine.GameEngine]
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=30.000000
```

And you're done! To change it back to the default of 62fps all you have to do is change the value in that second line from "30.000000" to "62.000000". Important note, make sure that your BmEngine.ini file in that same directory is *not* set to read-only, otherwise these changes will not be applied.

-30fps is highly encouraged for these following categories: Any%, 100%, Beat Joker  
-62fps is highly encouraged for these following categories: No Major Skips, 100% Glitchless, New Game Minus

Mousewheel binds for ripping grates, trophy duping, skipping dialogue

Here is how you set up mousewheel bindings for this game. Alternatively, if you are fine with using the game's default binds, we have a pre-made file in the [Resources section](https://www.speedrun.com/arkhamasylum/resources).

The ini file will be found here > "My Documents\Square Enix\Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY\BmGame\Config\UserInput.ini"

In this ini file, a breakdown of all the game's keyboard button mappings can be found.  As the game itself does not allow custom keybinds to be made (ex. a button that punches but doesn't use gadgets, or vice versa) we only allow copying other buttons for use on the mousewheel.  

For opening grates (this is by default the spacebar) add this line at the bottom (make sure to copy starting at the period and ending with Interact) :

To switch these from mouse wheel up to down simply change MouseScrollUp to MouseScrollDown.  To do down to up, do the opposite.

For skipping dialogue without punching (this is by default the Xbox B button) add this line at the bottom (make sure to copy starting at the period and ending with CancelBatarangCamera):

If you need to change any settings in the future, you may need to re-add the mouse wheel binds in case the launcher removed them. Once you have them set up I'd recommend backing up the file somewhere for convenience.

Upgrades to Buy

**Note:** This guide is just for quick reference. As always, you should check the current world record for the most up-to-date route information, especially if this guide hasn't been updated in a while.

**General**

- Buying an Armor Upgrade fully refills your health. This is particularly useful on Hard.

# Any% (Easy) / Beat Joker

- Critical Strikes (as soon as possible, ideally right after the first trophy dupe)
- Double Batarang (if you're not doing [Medical Skip](https://youtu.be/sBaqqzg5L60), get it before the predator in Medical. Otherwise, get it in the Mansion after Batclaw Skip)
- Triple Batarang (Mansion after Batclaw Skip. You can safely ignore this if you're low on XP)
- Remote Control Batarang (Mansion after Batclaw Skip)
- Cryptographic Sequencer Range/Power (Penitentiary after rescuing Sharp. Range is more important if you're low on XP)
- Auto Proximity Detonation (**ONLY** if you're *not* doing the zips in Croc's Lair, otherwise ignore this. Get it before the final chase sequence with Croc)

Same as Any% Easy, *except*:

- Combo Batarang first (same time you'd buy Critical Strikes on Easy)
- Get Critical Strikes, Double, and Triple Batarang as soon as possible (ideally before the Intensive Treatment predator)

When exactly you buy some of the upgrades will vary depending on your route/whether or not you dupe trophies, but the order is:

- Combo Batarang (Hard only)
- Critical Strikes
- Double Batarang
- Triple Batarang
- Remote Control Batarang (**ONLY** if you're doing Bell Skip, not needed for Glitchless)
- Sonic Batarang + Shock (same time as sequencer upgrades)
- Cryptographic Sequencer Range/Power (Penitentiary after rescuing Sharp)
- Auto Proximity Detonation (**ONLY** if you're *not* doing the zips in Croc's Lair, otherwise ignore this. Get it before the final chase sequence with Croc)

# New Game Minus

We don't buy any upgrades *during* the run, but the file is set up with all upgrades *except*:

- Armor Upgrades (Beta Titan fight is faster without them)
- Combo Takedown/Throw/Boost (they slow down combat)
- Auto Proximity Detonation (Joker fight is apparently better without this)

Version Differences

tl;dr - For Any%, the Epic Games Store version on PC is the optimal version. For other categories, any PC version is optimal.

# Double Out of Bounds

On the Epic Games Store version and Return to Arkham (PS4/XB1), you can simply reload checkpoint after performing a "double OOB" skip (i.e. [Medical Skip](https://youtu.be/sBaqqzg5L60), or [Batclaw Skip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEo11Pp3Zok)).

On other PC versions (Steam, GoG, etc), Xbox 360, PS3, and Switch, the pause menu breaks after performing a double OOB which prevents you from reloading checkpoint. You must either force quit and restart the game (this takes about 30 seconds on PC), or fall for about 90 seconds at which point the game kills you and lets you continue.

# Framerate

Zips are framerate dependent. Any category that uses zips (Any%, 100%, Beat Joker, etc) is optimal at 30fps. Other categories are optimal at higher framerates (62fps is the maximum allowed), due to higher framerates giving you more responsive enemy AI, faster load times, and faster slow motion sequences.

PC versions run at 62fps by default, but can be capped to 30fps [by following this guide](https://www.speedrun.com/arkhamasylum/guides/7qhmv).

Return to Arkham on Xbox One X or Xbox Series X runs at 45fps on current patch. Playing a disc version with no updates installed should run at 30fps.

All other consoles run at 30fps.

# Animation Cancels

[Cancelling animations with cinematic gadgets](https://youtu.be/jpzspR37dAQ) does not work on any PlayStation version.

# Load Times

No formal load testing has been done, but anecdotally fastest to slowest should be:

- PC
- Xbox Series (X -> S)
- Xbox One (X -> S -> original)
- Nintendo Switch
- Xbox 360
- PS5
- PS4 (Pro -> original)
- PS3

# Mousewheel

On PC, you can [bind actions to the mousewheel](https://www.speedrun.com/arkhamasylum/guides/ng47r) to skip dialog faster, open grates faster, and duplicate Riddler trophies. This cannot be done on console.

# LIVE Service Error

On the Steam version, it is possible to get a ["LIVE Service" error popup](https://clips.twitch.tv/NimbleLuckyDootImGlitch-1EFYrSNFlomtgre-) that kicks you out to the main menu. We don't know what exactly causes this or any way to avoid it. This does not appear to be an issue on the Epic version.

# Corner Zips

On version 1.0, you can zip directly off of corners without having to first get corner storage. This was patched in 1.1/GOTY. This is not useful for anything and is the only significant difference between 1.0 and any other version.
