I'm sorry but I don't think is a good idea.

If we allow non-standard controllers and non-standard hardware then that makes emulation the most dominant platform for the category as with L+R enabled it has an absolute advantage over OEM controllers. Not to mention it has no real advantage outside of one level (also applies to turbo).

Also, players can slow down the game to the frame so timing by frames is not a good metric at all.

This is known about, we call it "Agressive Sockfolder" and it saves time using black magic which I will let another member of our community explain how it works.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention.

Title says it all, the concept is to crash SMB1 in one of two possible ways:

  1. Using the cart version, go to 1-2 with 11 coins, grab the mushroom and perform precise koopa bops to trigger a crash.

Example:

  1. Using the disk version, go to -1, die at the midway point, and then continue to the end of the level.

Example:

  1. Using the disk version, grab fire and enter -1, kill bowser and continue to the end of the level.

For real though, generally you just need jump on the right frame, there's not really any setups for AISSON.

Hi Everyone!

Just want to post about a few setups for 6-2 FPG which might be of interest:

The first one, and the newest is the most lenient:

Full jump on either frame 3 or 4, ensuring you fall off the pipe at walking speed, then regaining running speed when you land on the ground by holding B mid-air after falling off the pipe (see video for example).

Frame 3 results in B/3 flashing and gets D60 with D70 inputs, and Frame 4 results in D/5 flashing and gets D70 with EC0 inputs. One thing I should mention is D70 can be achieved on Frame 5 with C40 however if you're doing this in an IL please note that you can get hit by the Koopa with bad coin toss.

(Note: This setup gets R00, thus SlowPG will result in R19 or R20)

The second is essentially Pallidus 8-3 FPG with the frame perfect B-Press (view images below for cues) to get flashing F/7 and doing D70 inputs to get FPG with 2 frames to spare.

This setup provides the best feedback to whether you are set up or not, as on the perfect frame the piranha plant in the pipe shown below will be despawned.

@Validusername16 Again, you can use L+R without even much pressure by using a 3rd party controller on the NES as most lack a central pivot. Not to mention that even if a run did use L+R you could easily identify it, and if it was used to gain an unfair advantage.

This problem can also be patched in the ROM itself, I was discussing this with Simplistic_Memes and he did bring this solution up, while it changes the code the performance hit is negligible and doesn’t change the patterns, framerules, etc. so there’s really no reason why the MiSTeR should be banned.

Scotlandweb20002 years ago

@Validusername16 That's more an issue with the controllers and not the platform itself, as Wolf said L+R is possible on an original NES too if you use a 3rd party or very worn controller.

My opinion is while it is a niche platform to do runs on compared to software emulation or real hardware, it shouldn't be banned just due to the possibility of someone using a cheap or worn down controller, if that's the case then we should only allow software emulation.

The FDS ROM is completely functional with the NES Classic, as the BIOS for the FDS is included with the emulator, However what you are using @ThatsAnotherJ13 are dumps from unlicensed cartridge conversions from the 90s/Early 2000s, such as the "p1" ROM.

They will most likely fail due to the emulation used, not supporting the mappers used by these unlicensed conversions, plus any run that uses these conversions will be rejected due to differences in the game

(e.g. Red Piranha Plants only existing in upside down pipes, and the game crashing immediately after the "Thank you Mario" text appears on screen.)

It's definitely illegal to go ahead and download the ROMs without at least owning a legitimate copy somehow, wether it was bought from the Wii Shop Channel before its closure, bought from the Wii U eShop, or owning a copy of SMB2J for the FDS.

haxchi by itself, is completely legal as it requires you to own an NES Classic for it to work, and it does not contain any of Nintendo's proprietary code inside the program for it to work.

My advice is, purchase a copy of the game legally and then download a copy for backup purposes.

You must have a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online, which is around $20 for a year or less but you can get a free trial of it for a week.

@Mars02 It is using the ROM for Super Mario Bros, however the emulator is running at a slower framerate. If I remember correctly the Wii Virtual Console ran at 59.94FPS, so it would be safe to assume that the Wii U Virtual Console runs at the same framerate as the Wii Virtual Console.

Hello, I noticed that there was a run under the PAL section which got a 4:59 on the Nintendo Switch version of SMB1:

https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/run/y21qld5z

While technically it was ran on a PAL switch, the game itself was the NTSC version. Is it possible for this run to be relisted as NTSC-U or NTSC-J?
