As of today, the rules for the Any% (Set Seed) category have been updated:

Instead of version .930, runs are now required to be version .940 or higher.

This change is to accommodate for the Set Seed version uploaded by Speedox.

The leaderboard will be unchanged by this update. Though Speedox's run is on version .939Beta, I have personally verified that it is functionally identical to version .940.

After a 3-day coding binge, I am proud to announce that I have edited the code and created a Speedrun Edition!

New features: The Save Pod now exports the world! It will also exit your game to the main menu, so be careful about touching it during a regular run! The Load Game button the main menu now allows you to import an exported world! This allows Set Seed runs, a category which will be added in the near future when we determine that there are no game-breaking bugs compared to the base version of the game (the decompile-edit-recompile process causes many bugs, and I'm sure there are many still undiscovered). Exported worlds are given as space-delimited text, complete with checksum to prevent cheating.

Planned features for upcoming versions of Speedrun Edition: A slightly better checksum (I was too lazy to actually implement a hash function but it can be done quite easily I'm sure) A less bulky export (compression so that the exported text is less than 20 kB because the current export makes flash ANGRY) An external program to view these exported maps so we can find good seeds much more easily

Known issues: The sound system does not handle idle sound looping correctly. This version currently has a workaround to protect your ears, but you might notice that drill/rotor/engine noises aren't perfect. Some checkboxes in the options menu may cause cutscenes/transmissions not to display properly. This might result in you losing out on important cash rewards.

Hey guys sorry I've been away for so long. I was really disappointed to find that terrain generation is not very cut-and-dry. I have the full code from the original game. If there's interest I can take a look at it again and try to either rewrite it to pseudocode or just de-obfuscate it. It is generated based on some kind of randomness that appears to be somewhat susceptible to manipulation, however it is not consistent and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to set a seed for flash's random number generation functions.

I have made a breakthrough and ended up getting the source code for this game. Cheating is not a problem in a community where we have maybe 4 active runners, but I feel like it's necessary to mention this. I found a few things:

  1. Spawn rates, which I will work on when I have time and update them in the guide.
  2. A way to embed the game locally, which requires recompiling the code. I made it into an .exe which runs locally, I'll zip and upload to resources soon.
  3. A way to seed the world generation algorithm. This brings up the important question of Any% Set Seed. Shall we make it a separate category? I found a rather easy way of setting the seed, again requiring the locally embedded .exe file. I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on this, since currently the WR is just a grind-fest at the moment.

The mods are inactive for Motherload and I'd like to take over moderating the game. I have runs from over a month ago still waiting to be verified. Zero response to forum posts I made asking if the moderators are still online.

After giving it some thought:

It's hard to compare L4D2 to other games simply due to the nature of the console being more developer-oriented than player-oriented. That being said, the map command is intended to be used by players. I think that starting a new server is akin to opening a new blank save file. This could be compared to categories in other games that would involve completing "all characters" which is done by opening new files, so I think this comparison is fair enough to draw and thus I'd support allowing the map command.

I also want to point out that since we remove loading times, and we start timing from taking control, the elimination of start/end cutscenes from timing makes this question irrelevant. :P
