25 days late, but if you intend on using any of the rimbuk unlockable glitches as specified here, then the timer starts the moment you start the first race in arcade mode.

Kibō1 year ago

If you want to be more precise on the time that should be added: you can convert your framerate to the frametime, and add that frametime to the time shown in the frame before the timer disappears.

A quick timetable in case you are lazy and don't want to bother looking for a calculator: framerate (fps) | frametime (ms, rounded up to 3rd decimal) 60 | 16.667 120 | 8.333 144 | 6.944 240 | 4.166

If your framerate is not synced/limited/stable, do a benchmark run and take the average, or estimate the average, divide 1 by that value, multiply it by 1000, and then round it. Example with average FPS of 184.3: 1 / 184.3 * 1000 = 0.00542593597 * 1000 = 5.42593597 = 5 If the timer shows, for example, 2m 32s 460ms, you add 5ms to the time, resulting in a final time of 2m 32s 465ms.

@FastPup97 sorry for the late reply, haven't checked speedrun.com for a bit.

The games in the Midnight Club series aren't actively being speedrun in general, partially because the active community for the series is small, and then we have the speedrunners sub community, which is even smaller. There are a few people looking into optimizing categories for MC3 and MCLA, and there are some community plans in the backlog to hopefully boost the active member count, and thus also bring more speedrunners.

As for your category suggestions, I will discuss it in our Discord server to gather some community feedback. Feel free to join our Discord and participate in the discussion, if you wish to do so.

Ideally, every IL and category should be uploaded separately.

@melwin96 can you provide a list for us to add?

@ShikenNuggets it definitely does feel like a bug.

Have the speedrun.com developers ever heard of UX? Because this is a huge oversight imo.

Would also be interested in this, tbh, because right now the motivation to speedrun this game again is pretty low.

I may route the game properly in the near future, but I've also been slacking on things when it comes to other games, so don't take my word for it :p

If you want, we could split up the tasks to route the game into seasons, and which cars would be the most viable (both DLC and non-DLC cars).

Technically, yes, but because they are separate categories that run the same route, you can only choose one of the available categories to make your time count for (so bike any% can be counted for either either bike any%, or any%). Stuff like any%, arcade%, and 100% in a single run is possible though, because there isn't much of a reason to do these 3 in separate runs, since 100% is any% and arcade% combined: arcade% assumes a completed career, and the optimal route for 100% is doing career first, so that's any%, and then doing arcade.

I think the unlocking rules are the same in console and PC versions: https://imgur.com/LgcZq2W

Anything that has the unlock condition R in column C, can be unlocked through arcade (besides the cop cars). Also, SST cannot be used until after you have beaten Moses, because SST and NOS use the same functionality.

Thanks for this. I'll post a video showcasing it when I have time (unless someone else wants to do it).

Posted by @LRFLEW in Discord, and also a great example of why NOT to make it too large

Category Name: LA%

Category Rules: Same rules as Any%, except for timing end. Timing ends when you finishing Dice 2 in 1st place.

Category Rationale: The current selection of categories lacks any real beginner-friendly option. For many reasons, the current non-misc categories (Any%, 100%, NG+, and Arcade%) requires too much to learn for people unfamiliar with either the game or speedrunning. (I included Arcade% as non-misc as it is a subset of Any% (like Any% is to 100%) instead of having additional restrictions and rules or using a modded game)

Run Duration: The WR for Any% is just over 2 hours 38 minutes, with NG+ being just a little faster and 100% being over an hour longer. This is significantly longer than the popular categories on speedrun.com. If you look at the games list (https://www.speedrun.com/games) and sort by either "active players" or "player count", you will see that the games' main category are all significantly faster than for MC2, with all the ones I've seen being under 1 hour 30 minutes. This means that Any% is a massive time commitment in comparison, so people looking to try speedrunning will look elsewhere. LA% would easily be sub-50 minute, which would make it the fastest category. The only category currently that is reasonably quick is Arcade%, but this category has another problem for beginners. Learning Curve: The length of Any% means that there is a lot you need to memorize to do an adequate run. The route for Any% includes not only the path to take in the races (especially for unordered races), but also what cars to do and when, what order to do the racers in, and obscure strategies for follow manipulations, making it a rather complicated run to learn. NG+ and Arcade% are easier to learn, but suffer from being part of the end-game. Because you use end-game vehicles for these runs, you end up driving at extremely fast speeds, putting a heavy emphasis on race memorization. LA% being early-game has a simpler route for new runners to learn, and the slower speed and simpler races allows them to react more and memorize less.

Racing Potential: Due to its shorter length, LA% is a great category for speedracing (where multiple people run the category at the same time and race eachother with it). @itsDare (Dice) and I did an LA% race a little over a week ago, and we both did another race with @JumpingBamboo (Zen) and @MustacheThief a few days ago. LA% is the best race category I've found for this game for the reasons I mentioned above. Races like this can do a lot to bring attention to smaller speedrun games like this, especially through sites like SpeedRunsLive (http://www.speedrunslive.com/races). Adding the category to the leaderboards, and therefore legitimizing the runs, will encurage runners (and me) to do more of these live races. Gateway Category: Unlike Arcade%, The routing learned for LA% carries over to Any%. This means that once people learn and are comfortable with LA%, they will be more likely to carry over the skills and learn the Any% category. Conversely, Because LA% is a subset of Any%, there are already a number of LA% runs we can add to the category right away by re-timing the current Any% records (Timing the video proof is quick, and more than accurate enough for second-level accuracy). Adding LA% will create an already-lively category, as well as bring attention to the main Any% category.

Conclusion: I believe adding the LA% category to the speedrun.com leaderboards will be a great benefit to the game's speedrunning community as a whole. Please consider adding it to the leaderboards. Thank You.

Noticed that there wasn't an IL leaderboard on the left, and also no option to submit IL times. Added an any% IL category so they show up.

@Sylla929 in addition to this, could you split up the main categories into DLC/no DLC? Some DLC cars provide a huge advantage at the start of some seasons (especially noticable in seasons 4 and 5), and they also cost money, which means that not every speedrunner (like I) will have those DLCs.

Sure, you could argue "just buy the DLCs", but what if that person has no money or doesn't want to spend any money on it other than on the base game? I certainly have no intention of buying any of the DLCs missing, and have uninstalled the DLCs I did have for speedrunning purposes, because I tend to follow SDA rules on top of the custom rules set.

Kibō6 years ago

I'd say that you can basically use whatever you have unlocked at the end of career for ILs. I don't have a whole lot of knowledge of the technical workings of this game when it comes to speedrunning, so this might be something to discuss with @itsDare.

Requesting mod for Midnight Club: Street Racing, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Remix, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles.

Already am a super mod under the Midnight Club series, but I guess those permissions don't cascade down towards the other games (as Stefeende assumed a few months ago).

Haven't seen/spoken to Stefeende in a few months now, and I'm unsure about the activity of the other mod in Midnight Club 3: DER, I do see him having run other games recently, but he has never posted a run (maybe deleted it?) for DER, so I am unsure about his ability of properly judging the speedruns by others in the community.

We got a few more people joining our Discord recently interested in speedrunning these games, so it would be nice if we had an active mod with knowledge of these games.
