Version Rules

The latest patch (1.0.10) reduced the sell price of rocks and trees to 0, making it impossible to constantly rebuy the Humble and Wisdom packs.

Since this significantly impacts runs, I was wondering how game version should be handled.

Are runners allowed to use whatever version of the game they want? Or should they always use the most recent version?

I know I'm extremally new to this, but what if we create sub categories with patch specific runs? So it would still be like "Beat the Demon - Long Days - <choice of patch>"?

I can't think of any specific games off hand, but I know I've seen similar issues within other games/run categories.

With sub-categories, there should always be some interest in making those runs, especially in smaller communities.

Otherwise, they will sit pointlessly empty and make one question what the point of having them even is.

And if not, they will serve to "split" the community, and I'd rather have everyone under one umbrella than on two half-sized leaderboards all for a relatively small gameplay change. If it were a major content patch like the devs say they've been working on, it'd make more sense.

I am new to speed running and games in general so please bear with me. Following stackman’s comment, then if we are including then different versions in the same category, it makes sense to play on the older version where you can sell the black cards for 1 gold, am I correct? If so, could someone help me understand how to set the game on older versions instead of playing the most recent one please? Thanks :)

There's a guide for downloading past versions of steam games here. It's for another game, so you'll have to find the depot and manifest ID for Stacklands yourself. They should both be available on steamdb.

Haven't tried it for Stacklands though.

Cheers stackman, I’ll let you know once I give it a try and if it works :)

Personally speaking, I think it really depends on the Major category that you run. While "Beat the Demon" is fairly straightforward, the other two categories (100% Cardopedia and All packs unlocked) are really dependent on which version gets played due the changes in mechanics. I think at least a Pre-version and post-version sub-cat would suffice for now until the game faces a significant update. Then from there, the Stacklands mods can separate each sub category. This is just my suggestion, but I am open to other ideas.
