Avoiding and fixing the Crosshair Glitch

#Introduction

The Crosshair Glitch is a PC-exclusive glitch experienced in the V-Wing, Speeder, TIE Interceptor, and T-16 Skyhopper, where the crosshair fails to render. In particular, this is a problem for V-Wings because it prevents the player from using seeker cluster missiles—a core component of V-Wing gameplay.

The glitch seemingly has no impact on gameplay when using a Speeder, TIE Interceptor, or T-16 Skyhopper, other than the missing visuals. Notably, unlike the V-Wing, the Speeder's secondary weapon, the Tow Cable, can be used even when experiencing the Crosshair Glitch.

Thanks to the research of Shadowdevo, we have confirmed the cause of the glitch and therefore how to avoid it, as well as a means of fixing the glitch.

#Causing the Glitch

First of all, the glitch is caused by ending a level with a yellow 'homing' crosshair, either by completing the level, failing the level, getting a game over, or quitting it manually. It can also occur in slightly different ways by ending the level while the crosshair is fading between green and yellow or vice versa.

**Ensuring that you end levels with green 'non-homing' crosshairs will ensure this glitch does not occur.**

As a note, the glitch seemingly cannot occur in vehicles that can switch between this yellow crosshair and the regular green crosshair. This includes X-Wing, A-Wing, Y-Wing, Naboo Starfighter, and Millennium Falcon. For this reason, ending a level with the yellow crosshair is not a problem if the player intends to immediately enter a level using any of these vehicles.

#Fixing the Glitch

If the glitch does occur, the only known way to fix it, other than restarting the game, is to enter a level with one of the vehicles listed above, specifically vehicles that can shift between green and yellow crosshairs.

Restarting the level with a V-Wing, Speeder, TIE Interceptor, or Skyhopper will not fix it, nor will a Game Over, going to main menu, or even changing which file is being played.

#Technical Specifications

In terms of the technical reasons for this, the game stores a variable that determines the current state of the crosshair: whether it is green, yellow, fading between the two, or invisible. Since the V-Wing, Speeder, and TIE Interceptor are not programmed to be able to reset this value the same way that other vehicles can—since they cannot ordinarily change between green and yellow—entering a level while the crosshair is in the yellow state causes it to become stuck, and the only means of resetting it is to fly a vehicle that can do so.

The memory address of this variable is **00707AE0**. The known states are as follows:

Level Competion Requirements (Any%)

Below are the absolute minimum requirements for completion of every standard level. These make up what is essentially the requirements for the any% category. This guide has been updated over a number of years and will continue to be updated any time new discoveries are found.

#Ambush at Mos Eisley

Destroy every probe droid on the map to spawn 6 TIE bombers. The level is completed when the final TIE bomber is destroyed.

#Rendezvous on Barkhesh

This level is an auto-scroller, so nothing you do will speed it up. Losing the front-most convoy vehicle however; will slow you down. The level is completed when the front-most convoy vehicle remaining reaches the rendezvous point.

#The Search for the Nonnah

Locating the Nonnah faster will not spawn the enemies any faster. Clear two waves of enemies to complete the rescue. The first wave is cleared when the AT-ST and 3 tank droids unloaded by the Imperial shuttle are destroyed, the second wave is cleared when the 8 TIE bombers have been destroyed. The level is completed when the evacuation shuttle finishes the rescue, and flies to its destination.

#Defection at Corellia

This level consists of five battle areas, each separated by a cutscene. The completion requirement for each area is listed below.
Area 1: all 6 droids destroyed.
Area 2: 8 specific TIE bombers destroyed: 3 spawning on the cliff-side of the beach (A), 2 spawning on the city-cide of the beach (B), and 3 spawning behind the Capital Tower (C).
Area 3: all 4 TIE bombers destroyed.
Area 4: AT-AT destroyed.
Area 5: AT-AT destroyed.
The level is completed when the evacuation shuttle finishes its rescue. This process cannot be sped up once the second AT-AT has been destroyed.

#Liberation of Gerrard V

The only objectives necessary for completion are that the Big Gun Turret needs to be destroyed, and the Yacht closest to the Big Gun Turret needs to be disabled with an Ion Cannon, either manually, or by relying on Y-Wing AI.

#The Jade Moon

There are three requirements necessary to finish the level. The 3 AT-PTs in the Assault Vehicles' path that are walking towards the shield generator need to be destroyed, the shield generator needs to be destroyed, and the 3 TIE bombers and 3 TIE interceptors need to be destroyed. The level is completed when every objective is completed.

#Imperial Construction Yards

The level is completed when all of the radar scanners, the 3 buildings that make up the AT-AT factory, and the single building that makes up the AT-ST factory have all been destroyed. (In any order)

#Assault on Kile II

There are two battle areas that can be completed in either order. The level is completed when both areas have been cleared. The spaceport is cleared when every turbolaser, missile turret, and large building has been destroyed. The communications array is cleared when all the turbolasers, missile turrets, the 5 scanners, and 5 large buildings have been destroyed.

#Rescue on Kessel

This level is completed when every carriage on the hovertrain has been disabled with the ion cannon. (This can take less than twenty seconds)

#Prisons of Kessel

After destroying the shield generator; the shuttle will land at each prison to rescue the prisoners. Once the shuttle lands at each point; a squadron of 3 TIE fighters will spawn. The rescue will not begin until those 3 TIE fighters have been destroyed, with exception to the second prison; where a single specific AT-ST needs to be destroyed for the rescue to begin. The level is completed when the shuttle reaches its destination point after rescuing prisoners from every prison.

#Battle Above Taloraan

The level is cleared when every Imperial tibanna gas canister has been destroyed, in any order.

#Escape from Fest

This is another auto-scroller, and is completed when the front-most remaining AT-PT reaches the landing zone and the research facility has been destroyed. The wall does not need to be destroyed to allow the AT-PTs to progress, but the shield generator must be destroyed in order to destroy the research facility.

#Blockade on Chandrilla

This level is separated into two segments. The countryside segment (another auto-scroller) is cleared when the hovertrain reaches its destination. The city segment has three phases, each one starting the next on clearance. The level is completed when the final phase is completed. The completion requirement for each phase is listed below.
Phase 1: all 3 TIE bombers have been destroyed.
Phase 2: the evacuation shuttles have successfully evacuated. (Destroying the 6 AT-STs will allow this to happen safely)
Phase 3: the 3 TIE bombers have been destroyed.

#Raid on Sullust

Destroying every transmitter in the level will make the capacitor vulnerable. The level is completed when the capacitor has been destroyed. (Via the destruction of the 8 pylons making up the capacitor)

#Moff Seerdon's Revenge

Every enemy unit in this level needs to be destroyed before Moff Seerdon enters the battle. The level is completed when Moff Seerdon's shuttle has been destroyed.

#Battle of Calamari

This level has three required battle areas. The first is a world devastator and 5 TIE droids. The second is a devastator and 5 droids. The last is a devastator and 10 droids. The world devastators are 'destroyed' when 2 legs of the devastator are destroyed.

Destroying the devastator and all the droids in the area will allow the level to progress to the next area. The level is completed when all three areas have been cleared.

PC menuing time save for ILs

Below is a cheat table that includes a lua script. Sorry, I dont know how to attach the .CT file here but its on the discord if you cant make it work (search 'updated version of the script'). This saves about ~20s per restart in menuing. Thanks so much to the very talented and generous Thanaclara for making this.

Tilde restarts the level but holding Left-Shift while pressing Tilde will quick-abort the mission and kick you back to the level select screen without a life penalty.

The script queries the keystate via the game's memory space so you don't even need to navigate over to cheat engine. Just open the cheat table, attach cheat engine to the game process, click the check box for the "Restart Level Script", and then click back into Rogue Squadron and press the tilde key every time you want to quickly restart the level.

Just a heads up, enabling the script will cause cheat engine to look like it has frozen. This behavior is expected since it is executing a continuous loop in order to check the state of the tilde key. If you want to unfreeze cheat engine click INTO the rogue sqaudron window and press the period key (the one next to the comma, not the one on the num pad). This will break the loop and unfreeze cheat engine and effectively disable the script.

Terminology

#Tricks / Glitches / Technical:

**Auto-scroller** - A level that—under conventional gameplay—advances at a set pace, regardless of the player's actions. Rendezvous on Barkhesh and Escape from Fest are both examples of auto-scrollers.
**Bonk** - Destroying an enemy ship by means of crashing into them, with the intention of not also dying.
**Canyon-hopping** - Clipping through canyon walls; commonly used in Imperial Construction Yards and Assault on Kile II.
**Crosshair Glitch** - Crosshairs fail to render with vehicles that cannot swap between green and yellow crosshairs. More information can be found [here](https://www.speedrun.com/rogue1/guide/wzvat).
**Cutscene skip** - Deliberately performing actions that cause a cutscene to either fail to play entirely or end prematurely.
**Death manipulation** - *[See respawn manipulation.]*
**Dialogue skip** - Deliberately performing actions that cause dialogue to either fail to play entirely or end prematurely.
**Kamikaze** - Deliberately destroying an enemy unit by means of crashing into them, knowing that the impact will destroy the player's ship.
**Lumie** - a PC-exclusive speedrunning trick named after Rogue Squadron speedrunner *Lumie,* who first documented it. The trick involves dying in such a way that the ship enters a 'falling' animation and—due to artifacts of PC gameplay—gains increasing speed as it flies through the air and across the level. The player respawns where the ship ends the animation, resulting in a *respawn manipulation.*
**Reloading** - Deliberately dying so as to refill one's supply of secondary weapons.
**Respawn manipulation** - Advantageously positioning one's ship such that it respawns, either after a death or a cutscene, in a desirable location. *[See also Lumie.]*
**Sequence break** - Performing events in an order other than which was designed by the game developers—usually used to describe destroying enemies before or during a cutscene in which they are shown.

The Jade Moon Explained
I've been grinding Jade Moon a lot lately, and I've found 3 distinct respawn areas after you destroy the shield generator. This document will demonstrate what each one does, how to get it, and how the AI of the TIE Interceptors change.

	Respawn 1: You spawn behind the AT-PTs and can immediately destroy them by turning left. 

	How to Achieve: Given that you are flying directly there from the original spawn at the start of the level, after you fire your missiles/torpedoes, immediately turn around. Fly towards where the Commandos are.

	AI: If you destroy the 3 AT-PTs, there will be 2 / 3 TIEs firing their lasers. Making sure that the nose of your craft is above the Turbo Laser, you can lock onto the first TIE, fire, and attempt to either shoot down or run into the second TIE. That eliminates them very quickly, leaving only the third. At this point 2 Bombers will spawn. It depends on how fast you destroyed the first two TIEs to dictate what happens next. If you are able to lock onto the third TIE Interceptor, do so. If you cannot, destroy the Bombers. Optimally, when you destroy the second Bomber, the third TIE should be completing its second loop of the area and be right behind you. Then it becomes a matter of how fast you can destroy it, and the remaining Bomber. Using this respawn, I have achieved a 1:06 with the X-Wing, a 1:04 with the Naboo Starfighter, and a 1:12 with the V-Wing. I’m very confident that the times can go lower.



	Respawn 2: You respawn in front of the AT-PTs, possibly glitching the camera behind the first AT-PT temporarily.

	How to Achieve: Given that you are flying directly there from the original spawn at the start of the level, after you fire you missiles/torpedoes, immediately turn to the right, toward where the actual shield is. You must assure that you are EAST of the Missile Turrets.

	AI: The two TIEs will do the exact same thing as described in Respawn 1, make sure your nose is above the Turbo Laser, and aim for the lower TIE, attempt to either shoot or crash into the higher one. The quirk with this respawn is that it has a very high chance of changing the third TIE’s AI. In testing, it has a high chance of simply crashing into the ground all on its own. You may have noticed that the TIEs on Liberation of Gerard V do the same thing. It is unknown what causes them to do this. Either way, after you destroy the two TIEs, destroy the AT-PTs, and then turn left to where the Bombers should be descending. Remember after you destroy the first two Bombers, make sure that the third TIE isn’t still alive. If it hasn’t crashed itself now, it won’t. Then destroy the last Bomber.



	Respawn 3: The “Natural Respawn” this is where the game intends you to respawn. You respawn in the area around the shield generator. This is by far the slowest.

	How to Achieve: Given that you are flying directly there from the original spawn at the start of the level, so long as you pass the cliff surrounding the generator (This does put you very close to it) or if you destroy the generator from the other side, you will respawn in this area.

	AI: It all depends on how fast you get to the TIEs, sometimes they are in the middle, sometimes you are flying directly towards them, and sometimes they are in the same position as respawns 1 and 2. It is faster to destroy the first two TIEs before the AT-PTs. The third TIE Interceptor can get itself into a “fly loop” – basically if you’ve ever just flown up and held up and made a complete loop, that’s what the TIE will do. If you attempt to chase after it while it is in this loop, it will go until you manage to hit it (good luck), or if you fly away. If you fly away, the TIE has a chance of following you like the TIEs in Moff Seerdon’s Revenge. It won’t be nearly as aggressive, but it’ll be hard to actually hit. The Bombers follow the same path no matter what, so they aren’t an issue.
