That makes sense.

But as much as I could be greedy and ask for a 1+2 world category, I'd prefer to put that request on hold until the ILs are filled out, and I actually complete the 5 / 10 level any%. Categories are so tough to get community attention for in any game, and I'm not exactly great at pulling my own weight. ^^;

I do like the addition of the new categories, and may attempt to get on the leaderboards for them in the future, but I've noticed that the current 1st & 2nd place for Any% only includes World 1.

Is that currently the legal routing for this game's Any%? Because I have no idea, and asking is one way to remember which rules I've forgotten to read. ^^;

Oh, I didn't even notice that. :O So it's the same as the first skip as before: make sure there's a save file with all levels unlocked, and with the headband and last leaf upgrade equipped. Then just delete the save data and start over; I haven't tried it out with a controller yet, but you can exit the game during the cutscene after collecting the very first tear. And then enter the game from the start menu, and you'll have most everything from the previous save file (except levels 2 and 7, I think. Oh, and berries.)

So basically:

  • Have save data
  • Delete save data
  • Start Game
  • Get 1st tear
  • Hit Esc once the house appears
  • Hit Enter once the menu appears

I'm gonna have to use that for my runs. Wait, there's also a no-skip category, so I should be fine with other routes. ^^;

Don't think the game's been updated since I last ran this game, so I shouldn't have to worry about answering this off the top of my head.

I think there are 2 different skips considered to be the "Level Skip," if I go by my current knowledge.

  1. Save File Manipulation. Basically, you complete the game, and then you erase your game data without exiting the game. Then, when you start the game and exit the first level, some future levels will be unlocked. This basically allows you to skip straight to level 6 in Version 1.04, which can allow for some different routes.

  2. Skipping the loading at the end of a level. Since you still have control over your character after placing the tears down, you can pause and exit the level. The flag for the next level appearing is flipped the instant you place the tears down, so you can save a bit of time by loading the hub. This may-or-may-not be considered a "Level Skip Glitch," but I'm gonna play on the safe side for now unless the community for this series says otherwise.

That sums it up. Might be easier to organize than game versions, too. ^^;

I would guess, as the only video I can verify on the ILs is the diner's Lv. 16, that Lv. 1 is the train level. You can also 100% the tutorial level, which does make me curious about if it should be added or not.

Just a few, but I thought it was enough to try. That, and I don't have time to check the game currently, but this is what I remember:

  • Currently a PC only release, which happened after the previous releases were pulled from Steam.
  • Movement physics plays a bit more like Woodle Tree 2: Deluxe than Woodle Tree Adventures Deluxe.
  • Jumping is slightly shorter, but you move slightly faster.
  • Hitting an edge no longer causes you to slip and fall uncontrollably. You can also use your jump mid-air (I'm not sure how long the window is, though).
  • Triangle/Y/The Top Button no longer does a short hop.
  • Pause menu is changed and includes "Return to menu" function. Meaning the main menu can be accessed without restarting the game.
  • 2 player functionality added.
  • World 7, a required level to see the credits, has been added.
  • There is now UI for every berry collected.
  • Checkpoints exist as physical objects in-level instead of them existing at random, like in Woodle Tree 2: Deluxe.
  • World 1 skip doesn't work in the same way as other releases. It only works if you delete a save file and start another run without closing the game inbetween.

That's about all I can remember. ^^;

So, from 9 months ago, I'd like to admit: routing 100% categories is hard. :x I never got past world 1's blue berries.

On the other hand, I got the game for PS4. Should we add a category for that, or should I submit it to the Switch leaderboard? Honestly, I'm still new at this "categorizing speedruns" thing. ^^;

A note on ILs: I think level "2-11" is missing from the IL leaderboard.

Is it possible to add it in easily?

Oh, good to know: I was gonna ask earlier on how to do a TAS, as I've never done one before. ^^; But I found out that that the Deluxe version is a bit different than the original PC version, so if no options arise, a PS4 segmented run might be an easy alternative.

Er, as "easy" as speedrunning tends to be. ^^;

20 seconds? :O I clearly need to optimize my ending cutscene skips, then! I've, at best, been able to shave about 11 seconds off my time with it.

As an addendum: don't forget that World 5 shortcut. It's a decently large risk (10+ seconds lost if it's missed), but saving 5 seconds in a run that goes through World 5 is quite a nice time save. ^^;

After playing another version of this game, I learned there is a 3000 berry achievement on every console except the Switch. Should that be included in the 100% category?

Now that I think on it, if ILs were added someday, how would we time them? Would we do it from the sound of the first hit on the level sphere? Or the first frame the player appears in the level? I mean, the first frame when the camera changes position, which is usually when players gain control. I'm actually not sure about this. o.o;;

Gonna split this into its own thread, as it's not the same as adding ILs. o.o;; Honestly, I don't even know how moderating on speedrun.com works, but here's my proof-of-concept for an 100%. ^^; Only about 10 months late:

My idea for the category's rules would be as follows:

  • Place all 24 tears at the goals of each 8 levels, and collect the headband and white leaf.
  • Levels can be done and items collected in any order.
  • Timer starts upon pressing start at the main menu.
  • Timer ends after the last goal has been hit while the headband and white leaf are equipped on the player.

For the length that Woodle Tree Deluxe is, a 30 minute speedrun wouldn't be too bad to add, would it? What does everyone think?

I'll get to work on practicing this soon, but I can't figure out how to pull the level-start cutscene skip in either the Switch or XboxOne version. Any tips from other runners of those versions would be really helpful; I know each port has different coding, and that the pause menu has some weird properties to it (you can also start a jump and an attack while paused. o.o;; ).

However, that ending skip is gonna save me time on the Switch. -w- Just what I needed; thank you! That, and if we ever make a 100% category, we can definitely use that credits skip! :D Gotta grab that headband in record time.

It'll take me a couple of days to break my PB on Switch, but I'm looking forward to you grabbing the Deluxe WR. :3

Okay. Spent the last few days routing a low%. Basically, this is what I've theorized at my current skill level:

Worlds 1,2,4,6: 0 berries World 3: 2 berries World 5: 3 berries

I could see a true low% being possible on XboxOne, since you only have to run world 6. But for Switch (and I assume PS4), pulling all this off would be pretty difficult; you could restart the game to stop a run from dying, but pulling off every level perfectly is an intense challenge. Even though I know it's possible to skip every berry on Worlds 2 & 4, I don't think I've gone a single run without picking up the wrong number of berries.

I think I'm gonna focus on getting "All Levels" video proof and argue for that for now. It'd be more fun and less restrictive for new runners. ^^; I'd hate to make a category and be the only person on the leaderboard.

EDIT: Here's an XboxOne run out of the way. ^^;
