I'm not British. I thought I should start with that, because you all seem quite fond of "ad hominem" attacks instead of focusing on the issue at hand. Please stop mentioning who did and did not support UKSM, because that fact has so far been entirely irrelevant to anyone's argument. Moving on, as a neutral party, I want to make a few observations I have made so far:
Oversaturation of marathons is an issue that can't be ignored. That's not to say that organizing an event is a bad idea, but you have to be aware that there simply isn't enough spectator interest relative to the number of available marathons at present. The problem isn't so much that there aren't potential donors or spectators- I think there is ¤a lot¤ of untapped potential out there, and I'm working myself to cultivate interest in the Pacific Northwest- but there isn't enough distinctions between the marathons that are currently being proposed. The thing is, instead of all working together to help each other, we are all trying to compete for the same fan base, and this will inevitable end poorly for everyone.
That said, regardless of your intention, I think FFA has a point in saying that starting another "UK" marathon is feeding off of what UKSM has already done the work for. If you would like start another marathon in the UK, that is fine, but you should build your own foundations, support, fanbase, sponsorships, and genre rather than borrow the ones that the coordinators of UKSM have taken the time and effort to cultivate. There are plenty of other themes out there to choose from, not just location.
I'm not saying that organizing a marathon isn't a good idea, but that making one that is associated with the "UK" location simply because UKSM was so successful is not the right way to go about doing it. It's a noble idea, but from the outside, it makes you look like the ant that saw how successful the grasshopper's strategy was and now wants a piece of it without doing the work for it. If you want to start a marathon, be creative! Find an untapped and unique clique of your own. Start a speedrunning marathon featuring food and wrangle up charities that are associated with feeding the hungry or whatever. There is literally an infinite number of possibilities depending on how you market it.
Oh, and please stop saying that people's ideas are stupid because of actions they have done in the past. The person who says the argument has nothing to do with the argument itself.

This is less applicable for GBA (I don't actually know if they even support capture cards), but if you use an external console and a capture card, your recording software doesn't have to compete with an emulator for your computer's CPU usage.
Recently, there has been a lot of confusion and wild rumors going around about this topic, so I'd like to finally put this argument to rest. To ascend to the realm of moderator, you must boot up Ocarina of Time, find the Triforce, then use it to complete "Through the Fire and Flames" on Expert mode. This will spawn a MewTwo, which you must catch without using the Master Ball. After the battle, go to the menu, and you'll see that it's holding a copy of Mega Man X. If you can manage to distract MewTwo long enough to take the SNES from him and beat the game without taking any hits, you will receive a personal invitation from i_o_l to beat the high score of "You Have to Burn the Rope". Thus, the possibility of anyone ever becoming a moderator has been officially disproven, because nobody is ever going to beat that stupid score.
And now we have two Stephs. Wait, which character's mind are you referring to? Because I actually love how their minds think. First of all, they are willing to admit that they have faults and are okay with it. Second, Sora's approach is never to win the game, but to beat the other player; to realize what the other player is doing and find a strategy that uses it to win. Why do you find that scary?
It's not about grammar; it's about properly communicating. Steph- I mean Zach- is saying that putting exclamation points at the end of your sentences makes it sound different than you likely meant it to sound, that's all.

In general, I like to read the reviews of games before I decide to drop any money on them. In other gaming communities, maybe you have to keep up with trends to join conversations, but In this community, it doesn't really matter.
Even if you're 50 years late to a game's launch and millions have played it before you, if your run is better than anyone else's before you, then how late you are doesn't even really apply.
I haven't read a single instruction manual in my life. Before the internet era, this has actually ended up costing me more time than it might have if I just took a few seconds to learn about certain button combos. On the other hand, it sometimes forces you to find creative solutions. I mean, who thinks of using a butterfly net to fight Ganon or pouring forest water on Kalle Demos? Because that stuff is certainly not in the game's manual.
Honestly, I think that's one of the things that makes watching runs interesting; seeing people not restrict themselves to the intended paradigm created by the developers. But I've always been a sucker for those kinds of stories; the ones where people find creative solutions to get out of a bind that may have seemed impossible with the normal approach.

It's not exactly Alt-F4ing, but resetting the console is actually a required action for getting the Harvest King photo in the Harvest Moon 64 All Photos run, and it's required to access the phantom greenhouse after attending a festival. As long as the timer keeps running, it's all fair game.
Okay, so I think I've figured it out. Whenever there is a festival day where you automatically go to sleep, the invisible wall goes up. Saving the next day and resetting alone isn't enough to remove it. I tried all sorts of thing to get rid of it- I know it's possible because I've done it before somehow- but the only thing that worked for me was putting all my chickens inside the coop, saving the game, then resetting. I have no idea why the chickens are so important, but as far as I can tell, the key to getting rid of that invisible wall is to save with all your chickens indoors before resetting.
Nothing wrong with mediocre runs if it's just a hobby. Nobody crashes a pickup sports game and yells at them for having fun instead of being professional athletes, ha! Anyway, thanks for the introduction, and I wouldn't call your runs mediocre if you are above others who have attempted to do the same.
Not very speedrunning related, but as of yesterday, I'm one month drug-free, so I'm kinda proud of that. It's not something I've really told anyone because I'm kinda sorta slightly ashamed of it and it's really ¤my¤ battle to fight at the end of the day, but Washington's a tough place to live for addicts. It was actually part of the reason I started doing this, because I used to play these games while drugged up, but I can't play them like this without being focused and in top shape.
I like math; always have. Delving into routing / economics & resource juggling / efficiency calculations helps keep my brain occupied when I might otherwise be too bored to keep the temptations at bay, so I really do have you guys to thank for being an awesome community and being there for me, helping even though you didn't know you were helping. So yeah. Thanks n stuff.
Freedom of speech doesn't absolve you of the consequences of your actions, and I don't think a ban for those kinds of threats is unfounded or unfair. Honestly, I think lifting your ban would rob you of the chance to learn this life lesson, and there are ¤far¤ worse ways to learn it. Teach yourself to re-read any posts you make under emotional duress, and maybe sleep on it before you post it publicly.
In my experience, every defensive and accusatory statement that I have ever made while emotionally charged has turned out to be a bad idea in the long run. I lost the best job I've ever had because I made a defensive statement when I should have just allowed my emotions to settle before responding, because regardless of whether or not I was right, it simply wasn't the right way to approach the problem. It really is an important lesson to learn, and some people don't learn it at all, going through life wondering why everyone is treating them so unfairly without ever taking a step back to examine how their own actions might feel to the other person.
