So this happened to me at the end of a run just a week ago. I looked at the file afterwards and everything points to the level having bee completed successfully:

No VM would make it a whole lot easier to play the game. Now to find a 1.2 copy...Thanks for the info!

Timing ends on the level complete jingle anyway, so any time save between the jingle and the start of the credits isn't counted. Rather than TAS it we could just watch the video and compare it with another run. It looks pretty much the same to me. TASing would just be to replicate and confirm that the death/victory thing actually happens, and maybe to explore possible repercussions of it from a game crashing perspective. I'm already confident that it happens and I don't have the know how to explore the implications, so I'll pass for now.

It says you have to verify your email address on src before I can add you as a mod. I'll add you to the mod list if you let me know if/when you do that verification.

This is really interesting,nice find!

From what I recall from my playthrough on the windows version a few years ago, the aircraft "race skips" aren't really race skips. I dont know how to describe it, but its like the race itself is comprised entirely of lag frames (except takeoff and landing) and a modern PC can handle the lag, so the race is just really fast and looks like its being skipped. Does that make sense?

That's just in addition to all the other advantages of the windows version (puzzle selection, less lag in general, possibly more puzzles and therefore more fast puzzles before magnet hell hits)

I don't really care too much, but its possible that there should be a standard for windows emulation? I had to use a virtual machine to run the windows version and I assume delan does the same.

Canadamcill4 years ago

Full disclosure...there aren't really any rules here. From what I know, the windows version runs faster, has more puzzles, and lets you deactivate puzzles until later (if you run out of puzzles on the selected types, you start doing puzzles you wanted to avoid). I don't know anything about midi music.

If you get OddTom's route maker thingy (or make your own), I bet it wouldn't work straight away on the windows version. It would probably need to be adjusted somehow. Just a guess.

I'd say run on windows. SRC doesn't list windows as an option for platform, so its ms-dos and pc...very little thought was put into it, but we can edit the runs to say they're ms-dos.

Hi everyone, I'm just documenting an edge case where you die at the end of BCP after killing the last animal. This happened in a run that was submitted, so it raises the question of if the run is completed.

My ruling is that the run is valid. For reasons discussed below. I am, in fact, supreme dictator of the SSSV speedrunning community and my word is law, so I don't care what you have to say about it. However, if you want to discuss it here or in the discord or wherever, that's fine.

When you die at the end of a level, you still complete the level. This can be reproduced easily in Swamp of Eternal Stench by walking the gorilla into the teleporter tree stump before gorilla jumping to the teleporter as Evo. Evo lands on the teleporter, completing the level, and takes fall damage, resulting in a death. When the level ends, Dan cries like you lost the level, but the level is marked as complete and you move on to the next level just as you would normally. So level completion apparently trumps death. Furthermore, the runner reported that re-entering BCP caused it to play out like it had been completed: with a "best time" displayed. For these reasons, I believe the level was completed and therefore the run was completed.

The runner deleted the file to start another run and could not confirm that the file select screen read "zones secured: 31", but I strongly suspect that it would have said 31 and not 30. This would be the ultimate proof but I don't think that's really necessary and I don't feel like trying to reproduce the thing because I'm lazy. Deal with it.

A fun side effect of the BCP death-completion is that apparently the game crashes instead of running the credits. The runner also reported that the game started freezing on Smashing Start, so maybe it broke the runner's cart too. Hooray!

I never really cared about end timing because I thought in-game time took priority. IGT has always seemed accurate to me, with RTA being 1-2 seconds slower (because of accidental pauses?). My final splits are never accurate anyway because I'm too busy trying to spam through the text to split properly.

My preference is to go with last input for the final split but with IGT being the important number. RTA can be a tie breaker if people don't like sharing.

Thanks for sharing Jake! I've done that first clip before but never the second one. I also didn't know a setup for it and it looks like you've got one. Is it just firing missiles and then pushing R at the right time? I'll play around with it a bit to see if I can do it with your setup. Not sure if it will end up being useful but always good to know. Sorry for the delayed response. We're kind of an inactive community atm, especially on the src forums.

I'd like the tool too, but I guess we have to wait on oddtom for that one. Hopefully it gets uploaded at some point.

Canadamcill6 years ago

Thanks for sharing, ozidual. I want to get a gameshark soon so i can give it a go. I really don't think any of this will change the gameplay. Even changing languages is no big deal because of how text is presented in the game (no scrolling, only full dialogue boxes at a time). Technically, using a gameshark or an emulator should be banned for speedrunning this game (gameshark for possible cheating, emulator for decreased lag) but we haven't had any problems related to that yet so we'll cross that bridge when we do.

I'll probably post this on the ED64 site, but I don't have any requests for fixes. Instead, I would love to have any sort of rom hack type deal. A big ask, I know. Maybe something to look into would be playing as jungle animals in europe for example. This can be done already with GS codes but the animals have no models outside of their zones. From there it might be possible to "rebuild" some of the animals that were cut from the game, like the racing hippo.

Have at it friend!

Just gonna add that ESA has loading screens, both for level entrance and level exits. This, combined with severe lag issues, results in the game being way longer than SSSV despite the fact that you are playing less levels. This is from using an emulator and according to Marxvile, the lag is worse on console, so yeah...

Canadamcill7 years ago

Would be fun. I can do that at some point. Or we could just make you a mod since you're taking this game more seriously than me and Linkums. Then you can make changes as you see fit.

Canadamcill7 years ago

Based on the responses to the thread you started in the general forums, it seems like most people don't care all that much about it. Also, if it requires manually inputting the information, then it is a step further away from just doing what a robot tells you to do. Given what you say about the tools and the feedback from the general community, I'm now leaning more towards simply allowing it for any%. I mostly run this game once in a blue moon in a non-serious manner, so I don't think I'd ever use the tools, but I would love to play around with them at least a little.

I've also thought more about how to differentiate tools vs no tools and we can either make separate categories or have them as sub-categories under the same "any%" banner, kind of like some games have for emu/console or pal/ntsc or amiibo/not or whatever. As a single category though the times would be WAY different but given that very few people even play the game, it doesn't really matter.

Canadamcill7 years ago

(separate post to make it clear that this is now simply my opinion)

It seems to me that the use of anything outside the game is usually frowned upon for RTA runs. The one exception I am aware of is the tool used in Banjo Kazooie to predict the answers to Grunty questions during Furnace Fun, though (iirc) even this one requires the runners to go out of their way to learn information before it is useful. The tools used in Gizmos and Gadgets seem to just tell you where to go by reading the game memory or something.

I can see these tools being a good addition to the run as a separate category (like any% - tools allowed) for a couple of reasons. First, it drastically shortens the run, making it way easier to get runs in. Second, it reduces the often frustrating RNG that you have to grind though. I do not want tools in the same category as a tool-less run however because there is also skill in determining the best path through your own observations and I don't want to see this skill become completely useless. Furthermore, I would prefer to have any% stay as the "tool-less" category and have "any% tools allowed" as a separate category because, as I said earlier, tools are typically not allowed in RTA runs.

Thank you oddtom for making it clear that you were using the probability calculator and route mapper in your any% run. If you could share the information on how to use those tools (maybe here, maybe in the guides section) so that others could use them in their runs, I'm sure everyone would appreciate that.
