NOTE: I have only confirmed this glitch works on ScummVM version of the game (version 1.9.0.2), I have not yet tested DosBOX version and I doubt this works on Special Edition.

After researching this a lot I have figured out how to easily activate the "speed glitch" and it is the preferred way to run the game because it allows you to move much faster, possibly saving 4 minutes in all.

The glitch occurs when you skip the "lucasfilm games" cutscene at the start of the game, after a certain point. Thankfully there is a visual clue to help with this.

Look for the "sparkle" that happens above the L on the left, skip the cutscene when you see this and the glitch should be active.

Don't worry about how fast or when you should skip the other cutscenes, it appears to have no bearing on anything.

So how will you know you have the glitch active? That's not easy to know just by looking at Guybrush's movement. While Guybrush will move across the screens quicker and his walk animation is slightly sped up, this change is not super obvious.

The easiest way to know is by using a timer, which if you are doing a run is very convenient. If you start the timer as normal once you skip the opening cutscene and providing you skipped past the other cutscenes with expediency and moved Guybrush without making any mistakes, then if you reach the door of the Scumm Bar around the 13 second mark the glitch is most definitely active. Otherwise if it takes Guybrush more than 15 seconds to get there it's likely the glitch is not.

Below is a chart showing how long it takes for Guybrush to walk past the poster after skipping the cutscene at different times. Demonstrating the difference in walk speed.

This chart begins a couple of seconds before the first "sparkle", as you can see the walk speed is unaffected until around 5 seconds, about the time the sparkles begin. The chart ends after the sparkles have ended where the walk speed will be again unaffected.

TL;DR, as long as you skip the cutscene when you see "sparkles" the glitch should work.

So basically anyone running the game should be using this glitch because it saves SO much time, not using this glitch means a huge disadvantage. Also because it is easy to activate is why I am not advocating for a "glitchless" category.

I just want to start this off by saying I DO NOT believe that Cryptones has intentionally cheated in the 36:50 run, just that there is a speed difference between that run, runs that I have done and runs that I have seen others do.

Please see the video HERE where I demonstrate the difference between "normal" runs of the game, cryptones WR video and a run I did not long ago where this "speed glitch" occurred.

As you can see there is a noticeable difference between the runs. It's something that was noticed a few months ago but after investigating the footage I could not explain why so I decided against bringing it up.

But when the speed glitch happened to me. (and it was obvious when I got a 20+ second improvement on my 1st split). I knew I had to bring this issue to light.

I am also interested in what the rules are for MI1 because I'm going to start running this very soon. Why have they not been defined yet?

Going by Cryptones video it appears the timer starts when the Lucasfilm Games logo is skipped and ends when the game fades to black after the final cutscene.

I'm OK with this, but I would rather the timer stop when you make the very final dialogue choice, (just like it is for Monkey Island 2 speedruns)

Also, as far as I am concerned, you can speed up the text as much as you like, because it doesn't matter. You should be using Period (.) Key to manually skip text, which is much much faster.,

Yeah i have done this a few times, it seems faster to switch between them, would be nice to see a time comparison if anyone wants to do it?

So as soon as you see that cut scene start, I think that's fair.

I just checked and it is indeed in Casual mode, I'll go ahead and create that category.

That's insane, it's like the Coffins RNG in Monkey 2, but much much worse.

In that case its a 1 in 5 chance of getting best RNG and a time loss of 15 seconds for the worst.

Wow stellar work dude, I'm gonna have to re-read this a few times to get my head around it.

But to summarize, would you say if you get bad Elevator RNG then it's just worth resetting?

If it is a part of the in game options then I'm OK with it. For example: If you wanted to speed up the dialog, which is something you can do but wont save much time because you should be skipping it yourself (also personally I like to keep it on default)

Remapping the keys that you can do is fine because it is a part of the game, even if you have to find the prefs file to do it.

Any use of third-party software is NOT allowed. I think we are all happy with that.

Hey

How would you go about remapping the period key to the scroll wheel? Is this in the game options or is it by using third party software?

Personally I am not happy with this, I would rather everyone remain on an even footing and run the game as is.

But what do other people think?

As far as I'm concerned it should be separate. The special Edition has MUCH slower transitions between scenes and playing in the newer graphics means using the new style interface. Which I'm pretty sure is more cumbersome than ScummVM version.

The one advantage SE seems to have is the text speed can be faster, but its even faster to skip it yourself in ScummVM so it's kinda pointless. (I don't know for sure if u can skip text as fast in SE, i'll have to look into it)

You could run the special edition in old graphics mode but then you might as well play classic anyway.

So to sum up, it would be unfair to run SE against Classic mainly because of transitions being very slow.
