It all depends on which games you would like... I think its gotta be a game that you enjoy to the point that you wouldn't feel tired of playing over and over again, cause speedrunning requires hard try and errors.
If there's a game that you used to play casually for years it will be better, cause you'll have less to learn.

Goomba, The categories are not so arbitrary. If you think that maybe you didn't use to play this Mario kart much?
In Super Mario kart each pair of cars have their own weight, handling, speed and cornering. If you drive with one kart it's a totally different gameplay than driving with the other.
For instance, Bowser and DK reach a maximun speed that become impossible for other karts to catch up (therefore runners always choose them). But with Luigi and Mario that are more balanced the AI drivers would be always on your tail. Yoshi and Peach are the lightest ones which have best acceleration, but the easiest to corner-out And so on.
It requires different skills for speed and cornering. It will be other run.
It's the same as playing with Mario or Luigi in Super Mario bros Lost Levels, or Super Mario Bros 2. Each one has its own run, with different timing for jumping, running etc
Like runners are always creating all kinds of bizarre categories for Super Mario World that have the same gameplay no matter which character you choose. Why not create new ones for totally different characters?
And little competition?? How can a classic have little competition? Super Mario Kart was race-runned in last AGDQ.

I notticed that there are no categories for drivers choice.
So it is that everyone just wants to play with bowser or DK. which makes the speedrunning community of this game being so repetitive
What about creating new categories like
MARIO PRINCESS category BOWSERKOOPA TROOPA category
It would be fun to have fresh categories so players could use different skills on this game.

So Virtual console is emulation. As for retro compatibilty using the CDs I should just mention I played on the Ps2.

I guess this is not a new question here, but...
If I play N64 games in my Nintendo Wii the run is considered to be a Run played on a N64 console the same? Or is it considered emulation?
I don't have a Psone. If I play a Psone game on my PS2 when I upload the run I can say I captured it from a psone?

Hey, nobody was born good at anything. You don't need to be among the best of those games you like to start running them! So give a try whenever you feel ready, Just do as I do and have fun! You should beat your personal best times and improve with time!
Man, That's awesone! I always wanted to see a speedrun of this PS2 game! It looked so promising back then. I don't know if the game is actually this good but... Seems like a hidden jewel.

I noticed that Minion runs do not appear on runners personal info '-' Is it normal?
If some runs are not being shown on leaderboard it's because the Option EDIT GAME >> EMULATOR RUNS >> HIDDEN BY DEFAULT is active. Please, change to SHOW BY DEFAULT on all TM games and categories!
Click on Edit game, check all the options. For example, on rules, see if the emulators runs is chosen "hidden by default". "It can cause to hide some runs. Switch to "shown by default".
What about the background art? There are plenty of nice wallpapers that could fit this board. =)
