Can we just say "Project64 v1.6" is the only emu allowed?
Adding a new game isn't the best option, but if anything is going to happen it's going to be that so the elitists won't lose sleep over using the misc tab function's actual purpose. And an argument saying you don't wanna have to verify the truckloads of runs submitted for the misc categories contradicts the earlier argument of "no one would run them."
I think at least making a separate game for all the misc categories would do nicely, I know lots of people who've done 45/31 star, it wouldn't be as "empty" as you might think.
So what are we going to do about this?
The fact is the only categories that should exist outside miscs are: 120 star (100%), 70 star (any% no major glitches), and 0 star (any%).
Lol that's correct, every single run of any game that is not a misc category finishes the game so they can be submitted to the any% leaderbords. Since we are speedrunners and don't do silly things like that, we don't need to worry.
0 star = any%. Meaning beat the game as fast as possible without any restrictions. It doesn't matter if you have 0 or 1 stars, it's still the only correct "any%" category. 1 star should be called any% (missed ddd skip) then?
If you enter DDD you didn't do the BLJ well enough, it's not the categories fault if you lose a few mins due to this mistake. If you get an extra star in 16 star (the mips star usually) they allow you to submit that run to the 16 star leaderbords. 1 star is just for people not dedicated enough to reset until you get DDD skip.
Like I said earlier 1 star is basically 0 star but they accidentally didn't get DDD skip. They should be combined. Like 16 star allows 17 stars by accidentally getting the mips star.
If the decision on whether we should make any misc categories again can't be solved, it's time to look at the 16 star and 1 star situation. Come on guys, we have to admit finally that 16 star isn't a real category anymore and 1 star is pointless, if anything is becoming misc it should be 16 and 1 star. (If you wanna read more about my opinion read my second post on this thread.)
I guess it's time for the mods to decide what misc categories will or should become legit (as legit as being a misc on the leaderbords) then to finally end the conversation. :p
I'm just saying most speedgames have misc categories and they have found ways to not add every meme category there is, so mods or whoever should decide which misc categories deserve to be on the leaderbords, although like I mentioned 31 star, 45 star and all coins would be nice additions in my opinion, but it's not up to me. I would not be upset if any of those categories become misc because I truly believe they don't hurt anyone being there.
I'm not disregarding the all signs community or the moat% community, because they don't exist. Some people like the "popular ones" like 31 star, 45 star, etc lol.
I mentioned earlier they wouldn't hurt anyone being on the leaderbords simply because they exist. I have never seen an all signs run, probably because no one has ever tried or thought about it. When I say "most popular" I mean that people have shown an interest in actually trying or caring about the category.
Yeah I agree just because there could be misc categories doesn't mean every possible meme should be on there. We know that 31 star and 45 star are the most popular misc categories, followed by all coins I assume, so those would be good to add. Thankfully only mods can add new categories so I know you won't add in the rest of the terrible meme categories like all signs% etc. I have seen a few people run the categories I've mentioned above but I have never seen an all signs run, we should decide to put our foot down on how many misc categories there should be as a community.
Like I said earlier it shouldn't really matter how many people will, or does currently run the misc categories. They do no harm on the leaderbords so why not. I think if we make the misc categories again it will motivate more people to try them.
On a side note, 16 star doesn't make any sense as a real category technically. It should be moved to misc, but since it's been such a loved category for so long it stays. It's not any% anymore, that has been taken up by 0/1 star. It's not any% (no major glitches) because it uses BLJ's. It's kinda in the middle of no major glitches and any%, because for some reason the category allows LBLJ but not the BLJ that gets you into fire sea, which if you think about it sounds like the rules of a misc category. As for 1 star, just like you can submit a 16 star run with 17 stars (usually by getting the mips star by accident), it should be merged with 0 star, because it is the one true any%.
Misc categories are not real, they are just made up for convenience or fun. Just like the EMU and VC discussion I don't see why they shouldn't exist on the leaderbord... they never hurt anyone. They were just there for people who wanted to try something new. Removing them in the first place was a little bit of an "elitist" move in my opinion. If people wanna run 30/31 star or 45 star (which I think were the most popular ones) and they put a lot of work into it, regardless of whether we think it's irreverent or not, they should have a place to show off their work. Misc categories exist in all games and I don't see why SM64 can't.
Who cares about EMU or VC anyway? Anyone with decent times on VC or EMU should make the jump to N64 already, and the people with laughable times don't really care anyways. Even though I wouldn't mind removing them, the fact that they exist makes removing their leaderbords incorrect. Although I'd like to see a community who will only allow N64 runs I can't see how that would be a positive change. The people who play on N64 are not effected at all, while the people who don't play on N64 will be strongly negative about the change. Like I mentioned earlier nobody cares about EMU or VC, so what harm are they really doing remaining in the background?
I think at the very least we should make "legacy%" a misc, in respect for all the hard work people put into their runs before the manipulation was found. The discussion about making it a misc category or not doesn't really concern me, though as long as it exists in some way I would be happy. All the "legacy%" runs could obviously still be submitted to the "any% (no cd)" leaderboards as well.
