I'm all for revamping the leaderboards to full-game. It'll be more organized and easier to navigate through. I personally dislike how level leaderboards work for this game and it's a pain having to redirect to a new page to see the whole leaderboard for one category. I think putting Invisible Enemy under miscellaneous is fine since it's not that popular of a mode. Unless there's more demand to have it alongside as a main tab, we should just leave it under misc for now.

RE2 boards remastered Kreygasm

Nickname : Roofress Country : USA Game : Resident Evil 2 Category : Leon A & Claire B Estimate : 2 hrs max Video : I haven't recorded/highlighted many runs for RE2, but I have plenty experience across all the main scenarios. Leon A is the only category I've actually actively submitted times for at the moment. This game is rather limited in its glitches and tech usage compared to other games, so there's very little that can be done within the limitations of RE2 to drastically drop your times. It's mainly heavy on movement/menuing overall.

Commentators: I will try my best to commentate for myself during the run. :D

Schedule can work at any time for me, but I would prefer a time slot during morning/afternoon between 8 AM to 6 PM (PST).

I would suggest developing a mashing rhythm when you quickshoot. The frame window for it is a lot smaller compared to other RE games, so you have to adjust how you time your button mashes. You generally want to initiate your button mashing near the end of the recoil of each shot. This can vary with each gun, but most rapid fire is done with the grenade launcher or magnum. The recoil animations on those guns are longer compared to the pistol. That's always going to be your reference point for quick shots :)

Well, that was rather a bad idea on my part and I didn't think it thoroughly at the time. I had to ask since I started up Once Again as Jill earlier and thought I could do a knife run in a different outfit even with the bonus weapons, but then realized I had to completely detour. Pretty much why I put in the disclaimer to not recommended as Jill due to time loss. Anyone's welcome to submit their time in either mode regardless, but I thought it would be nice to put a heads up in case someone decides to do their first knife run as Jill with a new costume or whatever. Kind of like how I put the variable disclaimer even though that's a whole different realm and not really comparable, but still has to do with time efficiency.

So, no, I don't want to have to reinstate that Once Again has to be unlocked via these methods. As long as you follow the two rules for it in their respective categories you're okay. As for ODZ, I asked since I was watching someone's rocket launcher run for verifying and I could hear Forest in the background lol. I had to make sure with Carci since I don't follow RL runs at all.

I should've been a little more specific with my question pertaining to Jill. Her knife gets replaced with the bonus weapon so you literally have to detour to get it back before you kill the dog. I just wasn't sure what the inventory was like if you didn't happen to unlock the Samurai Edge or Rocket Launcher (I assumed the game would put the costume key in place of Jill's knife in this case), which is why I put the disclaimer about it being ill-advised.

Anyway, sorry about that! I'll settle down with the editing. (I blame it on VGMdb editor status kicking in again :( )

United StatesRoo8 years ago

Does anyone know if Once Again has the knife in your starting inventory still if you don't unlock any of the bonus weapons? I totally forgot that Once Again isn't a viable way to start up a knife run, so I need to make sure! If not, I'm just gonna remove the Once Again/NG+ disclaimer altogether for Knife Only and make it mandatory that it has to be done on New Game.

In retrospect, it made much more sense before I decided to add that carelessly for knife only. FailFish orz

There haven't been too many cases of good ending being submitted in the wrong category or even Barry only being saved. I don't think there should be too much confusion for what ending needs to be achieved for any%. Have you guys at the RE1 boards had anyone mistakingly save Barry before? :o

Probably best bet to leave everything as is. I've already completed going through the entire board to make sure every video got updated with a new Twitch/YT link :D

That's one thing I want to avoid when commentating 4Head . This is how you dodge this zom- ¤school girl laugh¤ GREAT TUTORIAL. 10/10 SeemsGood

I just don't know how to approach the videos really or how I want to convey the message. I even started writing down a notepad how many steps for every zombie encounter for reference. Still have to work on it especially since I've been going for those stupid zombie dodges I figured out.

United StatesRoo8 years ago

I know what you mean, Lileya. RE doesn't make the greatest use of the standard speedrun categories so practically any% could apply to all possible endings. It's why we have to figure out a way to constitute each % denominator so that it makes sense in-game and manages to stay within the criteria of the completion percentage without being arbitrary. I only simplified it since I was looking at the RE1 boards and used that as a basis. I'm open to any change to the category names as long as anyone else is okay with it.

We might as well add the variable in for PC since it's important for players to know how much of an impact FPS plays into games. The only problem will be trying to set the appropriate variable for each run especially the ones from last year. It's hard to tell the difference between 60/Variable due to video output not going above 60 FPS unless you know the runner is fully aware of variable being faster and is using it.

United StatesRoo8 years ago

The things that are setting me back on these videos is the inexperience I have with editing and speaking. Although tutorials done mainly through text and annotations can work out with proper editing. I just feel like it would be easier for me to explain things as it happens in real time.

United StatesRoo8 years ago

Yeah, it's a collision issue when there's a object or corner present. The zombie's unable to properly connect its grab onto you despite how close you can be. It's something I always take advantage of since it's incredibly consistent, but you don't get that many opportunities to abuse the environment to get by enemies as you progress further.

United StatesRoo8 years ago

So, I edited the boards a bit with a few things:

  • Changed the description for the any% categories to simply complete the game as fast as possible instead of complete the game with any ending. Sounds less confusing and any ending implies that 100% counts as any% lol.

  • Added any% to NG/RS/IE category titles for the sake of consistency PogChamp

  • Listed Once Again as being acceptable as long as infinite weapons are not used and One Dangerous Zombie has not been unlocked under the rules.

Now, I almost forgot while editing that One Dangerous Zombie existed (thanks FurryWulfz for reminding me) so I made sure to add that. I know Lileya had an incident in the past with her run getting rejected for being played on Once Again which got resolved, but I feel it's okay to have your runs done on NG+ as long as you follow those two prerequisites. Once Again is mainly played for the cosmetic changes anyway and at best you'll lose a sec at the item box going for the FAS. :D

Also, in the process of updating runs for the boards so that the videos linked are up to date. Unfortunately, I might have to reject some due to the footage being lost :(

No worries! Take your time with it. I think a lot of us have been doing the same myself included BrokeBack I'll be focusing on zombie dodges at the moment and I haven't thought about how to organize the videos yet.

United StatesRoo9 years ago

I give credit to nurmatgfx for finding these dodges in particular. I've always noticed this when I was running, but just assumed I was getting lucky. There's an amount of precision involved on top of the RNG you get with zombie AI for whatever area you're in. Some work really well while others are just 50/50. I would honestly go with whatever method suits you best in the end. I sought out to find how these dodges work since I'm mainly a tank control user. I prefer being able to have more control on my movement personally. Arrange controls are probably on par with these quicker dodges if you're good with the control scheme. My only gripe with alt is that it's rather awful against sleeper zombies in confined spaces.

I still need make more videos showcasing every possible area you can do this and the success rate. I think the more distance you have between yourself and the zombie, the better chance you'll have of avoiding it. As for effectiveness vs a sleeper zombie, it's very much possible to get by one. I mean, you can even get away with doing these dodges slightly slower (have a brief pause before you start running by). You just need to make sure you're not in range of a grab before you hit the wall. It's sort of similar to how RE2 zombie dodges work (mainly the first zombie in Red Hallway). You stay on one side of the wall to draw the zombie away to create space to avoid it.

As much as I get annoyed with the zombies on this game, I always assume that every zombie is going to be a sleeper regardless lol. It forces me to adapt quickly so if I get one in an area, I know I can get away with running by it no issue (except the Room 002 zombie BabyRage )

United StatesRoo9 years ago

Since the timer for LiveSplit and REHD Hook start on the opening cutscene it most likely would take into account as the game is already running at that point. :(

United StatesRoo9 years ago

For those that are currently running the PC version of this game, please be aware that if you are not playing at 60 FPS/variable (caps at 120 FPS) with V-Sync off you will be at a disadvantage in terms of clear time. It is not mandatory that runs be submitted with these settings, but this topic was created in mind to disclose information surrounding the FPS affecting the game or not. It's well known amongst the top runners that aspects of the game are affected by the FPS setting resulting in a faster time. Although we haven't discussed about separating PC by FPS (which I do not recommend at all), the consensus has been that variable is faster than 60 FPS. If you haven't adjusted to variable yet I encourage that you do it now especially if you want to compete for quicker times.

Aspects affected by 60 FPS/Variable:

  • faster text cycles and menus
  • stairskating speeds achievable only on these settings
  • instances of AI behavior changing with enemies

At the moment, there isn't any data available for reference on the FPS settings. I'm unable to conduct the research myself since my PC specs are insufficient to maintain the desirable FPS needed to properly test this. Whenever I get a better opportunity to record, I will get on board with it. :D

If there's anything I'm missing in regards to what the FPS affects let me know in this thread! Thank you and happy running. OpieOP

Refer to the picture below for video setting adjustment. Adjust only V-Sync to Off and FPS to 60/Variable. Everything else is user preference and it may help to lower the quality for people on low-mid end machines like myself.

I wouldn't worry too much about the FPS affecting AI. Maybe I'm one of the few that barely even notices a difference at all when playing. I still think it comes down to RNG and how you adapt to it at the end of the day. There is one instance I do recall where the FPS had an affect on pushing objects (mainly in the labs with the shelves). Pessi had to readjust the amount of pushes for one of the characters since he could barely get out that room by a frame lol.

From my experience, Lisa and Black Tiger are the two enemies that have seen a change in AI with the HD release. Black Tiger is much more problematic compared to Lisa since it takes longer to regain control of your character at the beginning, and she's a lot more aggressive to her original counterpart. On the GC/Wii you were able to move a few seconds ahead near the end of the scene giving you an advantage and it was rare for you to ever get tackled down.
