Maxy was the one that edited the boards and put all of this into play without even considering a community vote. That in itself is terrible leadership on his part as a Silent Hill moderator.
Not that I disagree with the fact that it was added before any substantial discussion took place but I think this is rather unflattering and a bit needlessly hostile. The intention was never to just bypass community discussion, it was for earmarking.

Maxy created a new variable so that all runs that came through using it could/would be clearly marked from the get-go since it occupied a strange sort of grey area, the fact that he did this at the earliest opportunity now makes it easy for us to just split that shit down the middle or dispose of it if we want to with no runs getting lost or having to be manually adjusted. I did the exact same thing for Silent Hill 2 60FPS mod a while back, and that voting went in a different direction (ban entirely) and there was no particular issue there. The same thing was performed a long time ago for SH2/SH3 QS/QL only that has just been left as a variable and has basically since just become a standard way of play. These things go different ways, tracking it early makes it easier to make changes later.

Don't be so harsh, it's really not a big deal. It's actually saved some headache in the long run.

A brief roundtable kind of thing on the SH discord shows all of the (active) mods (i.e me, tekkie and maxy) are favourable to a category split. Nubzombie seemed favourable to a split, as did Enigma. So, the common sentiment is definitely leaning pretty heavily in the direction of "sub-category split" already.

I'll leave it for some more people to post their 2 cents, but there's a fairly convincing sentiment emerging already.

EnglandPunchy7 years ago

I'm making this thread for the Silent Hill 4 players to talk about what we should do about the Quit and Continue thing because it was mentioned on the Discord once briefly and then swiftly implemented without a whole lot of discussion surrounding the matter.

I've since heard a fair amount of reasonable complaints and dissent from the actual running base on the matter, so I'd like people who run this game to put forth their opnions on how to handle this? Separate category? Ban it entirely? Something else? Community thinktank, if you will.

because this matter I don't feel ever really got a fair discussion before it got passed and some people clearly aren't happy with it

My own personal opinion is that I'm completely happy to split the categories over it or disallow it entirely, whatever the general zeitgeist desires, it's just hard to tell what people actually want without a centered discussion point.

Go for it, lads.
Without the sound of the romper biting, you will not be able to phase through the door.
This is not completely true, it's just true 99% of the time. I have gotten it without the Romper biting sound, it's just happened like twice out of a gazillion fucking attempts. It's rare, but look out for it.
I'm not sure how this will affect routing for other categories.
it makes good+ final boss pretty dang consistent (seemingly? unless my math is off here or something but it seemed good to me) because you now have 6 extra shells to work with so that's neat
find the perfect emulator settings to mimic the game correctly
the funny thing is that I actually did go and do that myself and people still kept repeatedly not doing it right and I don't even totally blame them because it's a strange complex bullshit labyrinth of menus that depends on hardware where all logic is suspended

As a side note regarding Origins:

If you want to make points about Origins and its emulation, please feel free to go do that in the Origins forums. Using that game's emulator policy when it emulates a totally different system with totally different specifications under totally different contexts makes the comparison to Silent Hill 1 completely without merit. We should discuss Origins in the context of Origins, not as a false equivalency to this game given the completely different circumstances of that game.

yes, games in a series that encompasses like 9 games are sometimes treated differently because surprisingly not all video games are exactly the same. But Origins could perhaps do with some revising and tightening, it's a bit of a neglected board. It's largely just that the interest is never present until someone wants to bring it up to argue about a totally different game. If you want to talk about seriously improving Origins leaderboard state, I'm game, but I'm not really down as using it as a lame "gotcha" for this game.

Regarding an emulator split:

there's numerous issues with current unofficial emulations of SH1 that make comparing runs of SH1 with console difficult and as a result there would always be a large question mark hanging over the authenticity of any emulated runs regardless of intent of the runner.

There's no real option here that pleases everyone, cordoning emulator off into its own category doesn't make a whole lot of sense since the "emulator WR" would have just as large a question mark riding over it compared to other emulators as well as it being kind of strange to just make "weird janky versions" its own category when that inherently lacks legitimacy.

Banning it outright is lame and prevents people from even having that option at all to learn/run the game and I don't like that either.

Hiding is the only thing that really satisfies the middle ground of communicating "As a community, we're not going to deny you from playing it this way but we would strongly prefer some form of console."

and this still doesn't satisfy everyone because people care more about visible WRs without having to click on a filter button than they do about trying to find the middle ground between competitively-rigorous and casually accessible leaderboard rules.

There isn't a good answer. This is honestly the best solution we've come up with given the tools we have to work with on speedrun.com. Most PS1 games don't have to deal with this problem seriously because emulator tends to be RTA slower than actual PS1 hardware, so WRs can never square up. Silent Hill, due to its IGT, has a wholly unique scuffle with emulators.

Forgive me if my tone comes across as terse but I find myself re-explaining this constantly and it's hard to not feel like this argument isn't started in bad faith a lot.
Whether or not they are "official releases" they are emulators.
yeah but they're official emulations which is the only distinction that particularly matters

The problem isn't emulation so much as the fact that emulation varies wildly across hardware and unofficial PS1 emulators are all janky crap that emulate SH1 badly. Most official efforts fare somewhat better in the visual department and also will always perform consistently across different people.
then these should be transferred to a different category,
this is a terrible solution for a number of reasons already outlined in all of the previous discussions about this

if something is broken you don't move it, you get rid of it

unofficial emulations of SH1 have a number of issues emulating the game that make this solution really bad
This would mean that the emulators, if they are faster versions, then the runners would be at a penalty, not a gain as they would have less time to respond to things.
That doesn't make ANY sense at a base level. That's not the reason they're hidden
if emulators are to be permitted, a solid clarification of what settings are valid should be made
They have been. ePSXE is the only emulator where settings really need to be clarified because it's the only one where plugins are a huge mess. The rest basically just work out of the box. Course, ePSXE is the only one anyone actually uses despite it being the worst PS1 emulator but oh well.

Not gonna lie, this thread kind of annoys me because we've discussed and been over all of these points before and it's really annoying watching people repeat it every so often.

I don't understand how it's not kind of vaguely accepted in speedrunning at this point that unofficial PS1 emulation is really weird and janky and probably shouldn't be used. It's so all over the map with how accurate it is from game to game. SH1 gets a shit end of it because most emulators don't emulate the fog and transparency effects properly which causes all kinds of weird junk.
More food for thought: Why is emulator shown for SH Origins, when the emulator for that is worse than ePSXe when it comes to emulation?
simply put because PSP capture is annoying and nobody who's actually ran that game seriously cares about it enough to get mad about emulator.

I agree, PSP emu is fucking terrible but Origins is Origins and I can't be arsed to argue about it.

the pair of console WRs from this guy are faster than anything anyone else has managed to produce IGT. It's a better run. His Dino1 time is the longest standing WR on the entire website at 14 years.

yes people care about those times, don't be a dumbass

"Unless this criteria was added after this thraed, the rules say state, "Single-Segment" AND "No VOD, cut videos or desynced audio""

firstly I think yes it was added after this thread, secondly there's a problem with that because this run is so old it predates this website, predates this ruling and predates a time period where that was even possible for the guy to do. It was uploaded at a time when YouTube didn't allow you to up more than 15 minute chunks at a time. Chucking run history to the wind over trying to retrofit a modern technology standard onto a run that's 9 years old is wasteful.

" Has there been a patch (I am on 1.2.1.11) which changed the behaviour?"

No.

"Am I doing something wrong?"

Kinda.

" Is OddBod's explanation inaccurate?"

Kinda.

It depends on how far from the ground you are when you wavedash into it. You're pretty close in the gif, so you need to spend longer in contact with the ground after before you jump in order to get your dash back, you hit the ground before the cooldown expired. If your wavedash is spaced further apart from the ground, you'll get your dash back from basically mere contact, if you're close, you'll need to give it a moment. You don't always have the space to wavedash like that though, it's fine to do it close and then jump slightly after hitting the ground to get dash back.

You'll learn the timing as you play, it'll become intuitive faster than you'd expect.

I'm so glad people enjoy my tutorial video, thank you!

the short answer is that it depends on the individual door, your angle to said door, and your speed running up to it. You gotta memorise a good line for each door to prevent problematic doors from bonking. Everrrryy dang one of them. It's one of the quirks of speedrunning this game.

Best of luck with it all.

dino crisis 1 literally displays at the end of the game the amount of saves and continues used

https://i.imgur.com/rZHu2w2.png

Fat zero. It's not segmented.

stands to reason the dino2 one probably isn't either judging from the fact all the video files sync up fine and they cut in totally random places due to the timing restriction rather than anywhere it'd make sense to splice gameplay

I more or less said a lot of similar stuff to Timmi's pastebin like a year ago or something and got totally passed over for no real reason.

basically I'm saying yes I agree this is the only large game series I've ever seen that moderates itself like this, game specific mods would be a massive improvement. No single mod could possibly be expected to know every single game in the entire series well enough to make informed choices about them, delegate a little to the people who do. That's not even an insult to anyone's dedication, there's so many of these games and the runs are pretty long who the hell has the time to be a KH speedrun omniglot. I had a complete ballache of a time getting a change to the rules that BBS needed purely based on this one-size-fits-all approach that does not actually fit all.

Change in this regard has been desired and actively requested for like, probably well over 2 years now. It's getting kind of loopy seeing this repeat itself every few months.

There are B-side ILs.

If you mean a full game run that includes B-sides, the lack of a category is mainly due to nobody having done it. Do the thing and a category will probably get made.
keep the demo 5 category up
I did. I didn't plan on removing it, that'd be kind of spiteful.
tbh the submission rules there are a little annoying (60 FPS with no framedrops? my PC isn't that good and I can't exactly predict how the capture will go, if it messes up and drops a few frames suddenly my run is invalid?)
I dropped that from the ruleset almost instantly because yes I agree it's dumb.

also I want to repost this in like, concrete letters that are ten foot tall, he has a "different outlook" on a game he has never ran
