Yes, Fusion is allowed. Looks like there are a few runs on the board which use Fusion 3.64. Great to have another runner onboard, welcome in!

I'm not really an active runner of this game, but to facilitate further discussion I think we need more information. Playing on emulator or console? My first thought when hearing of strange game locks is to ask if you're using a flash cart. I've had very strange things happen with my FXPak simply because the SD card I was using was failing (Pretty much any SD card you buy on Amazon is a cheap knock-off/counterfeit and are very prone to failing).

Hey everyone,

I'm sure by now you've all heard that Twitch is implementing a 100 hour video limit to all accounts, and will automatically delete all highlights if your accounts do not get under that 100 hour limit. This is obviously devastating news to the speedrunning community, as so many submitted runs link back to Twitch highlights that are very likely to be deleted in April if no actions are taken.

I would strongly suggest that all active SRC members do their best to preserve their runs by migrating highlights to YouTube or other video hosting platforms. As a part of the moderating team, I'll be working hard to help you folks out where possible. I propose runners do one of the following:

  • Upload your runs to YouTube and edit your current leaderboard PB run with the updated YouTube video link. This will get put back in the queue for the moderating team to verify the run, but don't worry about that I don't mind. As long as the video is of the same run I'll accept immediately. This includes grandfathered runs which were run on emulators which we have since banned (ex. GENS).
  • You can add a comment on your run with an updated link to your video. You can either just leave it at that, or tag me in the comment to ask for the run to be updated with the new video, and I'll do that for you.

There will be runs from now inactive runners which will be lost to time. I have no interest in removing these runs from the leaderboards; Twitch will not erase our history.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

@Jaggybabs I've submitted a request to have you added as a moderator for this game. I'm unable to do it myself as I'm not a super mod, but hopefully the request won't take long to be finalized.

I generally think speedrunners should be looking to run whichever region of the game gives the best time, which would in this case should the NTSC-U version. NTSC-J is often preferred in text heavy games, but rarely do I see NTSC-U category board splits on those games for people who don't wish to run the Japanese version.

I've made my case in the past as to why I don't feel a glitchless category in this game has much merit. The two routes do not greatly differ in a theoretical glitchess category. Aside from 4 frame-perfect jumps, you're not clipping through the floor in stage 2 and that's it. Unless you really want to be pedantic about what is classified as a glitch, like banning jumps on the edge of ledges that give you extra distance.

That all being said, I don't want to be the old man yelling at the kids to get off his lawn. My interest in moderating has greatly diminished over the last while. If there is someone who is established in the speedrunning community who would like to become a moderator for this game, please let me know and I'll request they be added. They can communicate with current and past World of Illusion runners about how they'd like the leaderboards be managed.

Emulator and console being split already solves most of the problems with differences between console and emulator runners. This was done because it's known that emulators run faster than hardware. The previous moderation team came to a conclusion on which emulators would be allowed moving forward, and those emulators (GPGX, Blast Em, and to a slightly lesser extent, Fusion) have been the standard for Genesis emulation for quite some time.

I am however not interested in banning front-ends like RetroArch over what amounts to a one second advantage. In my opinion, now that the secret is out, runners now know that RetroArch with the GPGX core is the fastest way to run the game, if you want to compete for a top time then use that combination.

Woah, interesting. I'll leave it to Svipur to play around with, he may be able to get it to work.

Yeah, this is a game of eaten inputs and lag. Once you get a bit more comfortable with the run you'll identify problem areas and workarounds if they exist. The earthquake in 1-2 is laggy and can eat inputs as an example, but near the end of the stage if you move about an extra 10'ish pixels to the right before jumping up to the top ledge you can pretty much eliminate the eaten jump input. On the other hand, like quarbit pointed out, there are other places in the game where you're at the mercy of the game. The last part of stage 5-5 is probably the best example of that.

Perfect. Feel free to submit any runs faster than your previous 12 minute PB, it doesn't have to be a run faster than the above rejected run.

It's all good friend, I realized after the fact that you likely didn't see the original comment. If for some reason your still having audio capture issues feel free to DM me and I can try and help troubleshoot.

wątek: EarthBound
Newfoundland, CanadaPaulSaltine1 year ago

Yeah, Earthbound is a very expensive game so unless money is no factor, I wouldn't suggest it. A cheaper option than NTSC console + game, or even a Mister, would be a SNES Classic. Software emulation (as opposed to hardware for a Mister) but it would get the job done.

Which emulator is loaded onto the pi? That could be a place to start, though I can't remember if emulators were tested or not for RNG manip.

Newfoundland, CanadaPaulSaltine1 year ago

Very interesting. I think if you were to use it at the beginning of the last stage that there may be enough apples to re-collect the required 35'ish to fight the final boss? I can't remember.
