IMO, it could be clearer. Otherwise I just suspect the same issue will come up at a similar pace.
If a game is shitty, points-based, point-and-click based, not notable, trivial or of a low quality, but has nothing to do with being a visual novel, non-game activity or use flash, or being a webgame, and that's the basis for the a game's rejection, it's confusing. It could be clarified. It could also be noted that it helps content mods to provide as much information about a game, the run, and what not outside the given fields.
I dunno, it's not killing me either way, tbh, just seems like it could clear some of Site forum of this repeating topic a bit.
@Lieutenant_Boo Full-Game Runs and IL Runs are listed separately on the profile, see: https://www.speedrun.com/user/Lieutenant_Boo/individual_levels
Don't really know anything about the game, but they I'm guessing since there are a bunch of separate games with the same objective involved, it was just easier and looked nicer as a list of individual levels opposed to a slew of categories.
I'd probably ask on a specific game's forum whether they allow such a thing. I'm not 100% certain, since I'm not familiar with them, but I'm pretty sure HDD loaders are generally banned, since they are third party software. Similarly, I think running PS3 game's with a SSD is also generally not allowed for similar reasons. Whereas PS4 SSD's are allowed since they are released by Sony. But, it's likely down to a game by game basis.
Hey. I just got this game added today (this morning before I went to work). I haven't quite finished setting up the rules 100% yet, and I'm at work for another 5 hours before I'm off, and can double check everything just to verify I got the boards set up in the best possible way.
Given the IGT and difficulty with recording from an original GBA, I'm inclined to think there wouldn't be a problem or issue with allowing pictures of IGT times particularly for runs done on the actual handheld. You can submit your run for now, but it might be 24 hours before I sit down and confirm everything is good. Also, if I get home later and find something that might be an issue with taking a picture of the handheld, I'll be sure to bring it up here.
I made a mistake in my wording on something a little bit confusing, but I think we are on the same page.
Yeah, I can see how people run into the confusion there, I wish I had a great way to quickly explain it.
When creating a variable, if one of the variables is set to "default" and the option for "use as subcategory" is not selected, then all variables that aren't the default one are filtered out. If none of the variables is set to "default" and the option for "use as subcategory" is not selected, it will list all runs despite any given variable unless manually filtered out. If one of the variables is set to "default" and the option for "use as subcategory" is selected, it will put the runs under subcategory lists separately. For this option, the "default" check mark is just making that variable that first to show up in run submission dropbox field. And, using a subcategory requires a default.
I think the confusion comes when someone first tries to create a variable that isn't a subcategory because the first variable you create in the list is automatically default and they didn't check the [?], then they add a couple more variables and then save the game edit. Then when there are runs with different variables but they don't see them all show on the lb like they do on other lb's, they are confused as to why that is. So I think that's why I see this question come every so often. Luckily, it's a pretty easy fix (if they weren't wanting runs to be filtered by the default variable) and doesn't require any editing of runs or anything.
my guess is no one has tried to color transient a single letter before? pretty jealous right now to be honest.
Correct. The issue is that the extra variables he's made have one of the options marked as "Default." For whatever reason on variables/subcategories, this causes all the runs not marked with the "default" subcategory to not show, but only if you don't set the variable as a "Use as subcategory." If you mark the "Default" option for a Category, it doesn't do that, it just makes the option that first available in the box for submitting a run (instead of using the drop box to change it).
I use the ~ key for splits personally, since it's a key I basically never use outside messing with MS-DOS. But I don't run console, which I'm sure make's it a little bit more difficult in terms of arranging your gear in a way that is functional and comfortable.
Eventually I will look into getting some sort of USB foot pedal that I can use as a means of hitting splits without having to use my hands. In the mean-time though, the best I can do is try to position splits at points in game play where my hands have nothing to do for a few seconds.
Welcome, btw.
Basically enable "Time without Loads" and "In-Game Time" and then stipulate in the rules to only submit IGT for level runs. Then in the game settings, select "Hide Empty Columns." That way on the full game leader board, all three times show up (with the most important being default) and then IL runs will only have IGT's in their submissions. The board will sort by IGT's if that is all that is submitted, and only show the IGT's.
I'm assuming since the word console is being used here, computer isn't in the running (even though obviously, a great computer is pretty beneficial to speedrunning in general, and for more than just the games released for it).
Everything up to the 4th generation consoles seem to be more or less easy to emulate accurately. 5th and 6th generation consoles are all over the place in terms of emulation, and they contain a good deal of exclusives. Then starting 7th generation and more so later ones that the majority of games end up getting ported to both PC and console emulator, the majority of which are just going to load faster if people have computers that are faster than consoles. So if you are thinking about consoles to go with, I'd recommend things from the 5th and 6th generation. Hardware is still pretty common, but won't be 10 years from now.
The real issue you here, which I forgot to mention, is how exactly you plan to stream whatever is going on on the laptop. It takes far more effort to stream or record video than it does to emulate DOS. It's not crazy consumption to just record though, especially since you can record with pretty low settings playing stuff on DOSBox.
Not sure where else to put this, but is it possible to delete: https://www.speedrun.com/chickens2
It's basically old freeware form the DOS era. While I don't think that necessarily is a disqualifying element, given that it was made and released by a single dude and doesn't really possess any meaningful game play. Was the first game I requested, doubt it would be accepted today.
IMO, resubmit as series, explain what you did above in the notes, explain why the game is probably notable, granted, in Finland. I dunno, just looks like some sort of creepy Nordic Pajama Sam to me. Good luck.
The PAL version of the game is running at 5/6ths the speed of the NTSC, so yeah, it's earlier to control because the windows of time of possible inputs is longer. In some games with IGT, it can be advantageous, assuming the IGT is frame dependent, because the clock runs 5/6ths the speed of the NTSC clock. In real time though, it's always a disadvantage.
Now that I think about it, a big problem with having a compilation set out on a level leaderboard is that they would share the name category name. Unless of course, you didn't have a cateogry name, but just specific levels with their own sets of rules.
If you are using savestates, it's probably why.
Likely that rolls are not truly independent events, but that series of rolls are preset and chosen by some mechanism such as a timer for when the game starts. You'd have to check the ram of the game to figure out specifically what might control this.
There's a a Texas Hold 'Em Poker I've ran on GBA before where the hands dealt were like the same every time. Some of these GBA 3rd party releases are pretty shoddy and filled with minimal programming.
As a side note, will y'all put the emulator and version you used for your runs going forward? It would be much appreciated.
In order to submit a run, you just find the game you are playing in the search bar. On that page, there is a "Submit Run" button in the top-right of the leaderboard. Just hit that, fill out all the info, and then wait for it to get verified.
Welcome, and good luck.
