A few years ago, I ripped my SAV file from my G&W gallery cartridge for a friend so he could play it. I forgot I had done this.
I'd like folks to be able to play it without grinding. This SAV should unlock all the games on an Everdrive or on a GBA emulator. I cannot test this sadly atm, so if someone wishes to, it's now available for download in the resources tab.
EDIT: IIRC it IS possible to flash your GBA cart with a SAV file but I cannot say how, I used a modded DS to rip the SAV file back in 2019 or so.
UPDATE: On further analysis, despite the inaccuracies of the PicaPic emulator, I think it can be added as a seperate category. This way, at the very least folks that cannot play the original hardware (and can't or won't unlock the G&W game on GBA) can at the least speedrun the game.
I will retroactively be approving the fastest run ever submitted to this board that was done on PicaPic. As of this moment, this board will only allow that emulator. This run will also be the only one on the board, as checking the audit logs, it is the only run ever submitted using PicaPic.
I don't think we should include the emulator on the board (and I'm all for a compelling argument as to why it should be allowed). According to the research done a few years ago, the game does not play true to the original hardware. However, if there's enough people that feel like one SHOULD be made, I'll do what the community wants :)
I'm definitely ok with a category split. If this is something we all agree on, I can do this. Now is an awful time for me, but if I don't get to it soon, just give me a poke and I'll set some time aside to take a closer look.
This board was abandoned by the previous super mod, so when I inherited it I didn't change anything. I'm willing to.
Since the 3DO, PC, and Web versions all have different dialogue for the different choices, please ask if you have any questions. If necessary, I can change the timing instructions for categories and/or make a guide for those that are confused. Thank you!
I'm using it for a public service announcement.
Don't play this game. It's bad.
Hello! I was granted moderator status recently, and upon being granted access, I noticed a lot of the runs were inconsistently timed. I wanted to make the timing consistent, as there were no clear rules in the board rules on timing, and at least 3 of the 5 existing runs were all verified with different timings.
I went ahead and retimed every run to fit these guidelines: US TIMING: Time starts when you press "START" on the title screen, as this begins your run. JP TIMING: Time starts after you select your blood type, and on your final menu button press (meaning that after you press that button, if you didn't touch the controller, the game would still start, if that makes sense).
The two are roughly the same timing.
Time stops on the very last hit on Zod; when he begins exploding, your run is completed.
If there's any feedback I'm all ears. This way, the board will have accurate timing for the future across all versions of the game. Thank you.
I hope so... I now have 3 support hub tickets pending and no way to know what, if anything, is being done.
Yeah someone in my chat yesterday noticed that as well. The rules for the category say timing is from your first input on the title screen, and end when the ship appears. But that's not true with the runs on the board. I retimed my run afterwards, and was surprised.
I was getting 59s and 1:00s and was surprised, until I put another run up to compare. That's when I noticed.
My opinion? The rules should be altered to state "timing begins on player control after the ship drops ET off, and ends when the ship appears at the end of the game."
I could also put a mirror next to my chair so the TV feed would be visible on camera LOL, would that work? The TV doesn't lose signal at all (it comes back instantaneously). I could also try to get my 2nd webcam pointed at the TV
Hello! I just learned Any% with the manip, and I plan on attempting it tonight on stream. However, I quickly realized as I tried this on hardware that my capture card won't sync back up until a few seconds into each run. Is this acceptable? My Atari 2600 outputs RGB; I tried 3 different capture cards as well as 2 upscalers (Framemeister and OSSC) and there's always about a second minimum between my power on and the picture coming back, which usually shows ET coming down (I haven't gained control yet).
Ok now that my Trial has been completed, I'll leave my final thoughts here if anyone is interested for the future:
-The PS1 version is vastly superior to the Saturn version, but that's not saying much. Controls better, music and graphics are slightly better, and the loading screens are faster... Except. -If you play the Saturn version, every time the camera shifts, the game loads. On PS1 those transitions are almost instantaneous, on Saturn they take 1-3 seconds. But on actual loading screens, it's even at worst, and possibly faster on Saturn. -PS1 version has 10 passwords, Saturn has 9. The game area from the Boat to the 2nd boss is a marathon with no checkpoints, and a 15-20 minute time loss if you die. -I can't speak for the PC version but it does intrigue me... But as I'm done with this game forever I wanted to share these thoughts before I drop the mic.
I'm going to be (hopefully) attempting runs tonight. I'm planning on running the Saturn version but I do have the PS1 and PC versions on standby.
Yes, this game is awful. Your run was great to watch though! Giraffe mode FTW
(Edit: I'll submit under any% and leave it up to you, either way I appreciate you!)
(Edit #2: Runs won't be tonight. But very soon!)
Hello! I'm preparing to run this game. In my research, I've noticed that the Saturn version has different load screens and times. Since the game is unable to compete with the PS1 version directly in that regard, do you think the board should be split?
(Edit: by "load screens" I mean not only the obvious ones... PS1 has an animated crow, Saturn does not and takes longer... but also on screen transitions between areas, a lot of the time the Saturn version hangs and loads mid-level.)
OK so update, I got it working but I'm having issues with resolution and text (and it's the same in both windowed and fullscreen)
(EDIT: my main monitor is a 4K with text scaling, so I'm guessing that's part of the issue)
(EDIT #2: I was able to fix this with compatibility fixes in Windows)
yeah that's pretty much what I'm planning on doing. Does this game require XP? Or it work on a VM using 98?
I do have a question, as I have to learn this soon. After the completion of the first race, in the current WR, the races afterwards seem to automatically complete. How is this accomplished? Is this because you beat the 1st race backwards? Is there an exploit or glitch required to do this?
