Duckstation?

@Cimp With all due respect, I, as well as another moderator have explained to you in great detail why it is not possible to continue with said emulator. I've taken the time out of my day to respectfully reply. I admire your passion but the emulator will not be reinstated, no matter how much we repeat ourselves.

Sorry for wasting your time. I wasn't able to make sense, but that's life sometimes.

@Cimp You haven't wasted my time. I understand your reasoning, but this is the second time we have removed PS emu, so there is clearly a problem that cannot be solved. I respect your passion and suggest maybe Dolphin Emulator? It's the same game but with a cutscene skip if you choose to utilise it. If not, then you can watch them. I can help set it up for you if you'd like. I meant no disrespect. I just felt as though I was repeating myself.

As someone who has no skin in the game for Resident Evil 2 but has experience moderating a game that utilizes Duckstation for emulator runs I am quite baffled by the inexperienced you guys have shown to have with Duckstation. Once you have Duckstation setup properly it is basically impossible to change a setting without having a visual queue stating something has been changed.

The run 2KLS1 posted has none of the information shown that would help with your verification process and knowing whether the run meets the standard required for it to be accepted. In the Graphics -> OSD setting within Duckstation if you check “Show OSD Messages, Show Emulation Speed, Show Controller Input, Show Status Indicators, Show FPS, and Show Settings” the second anything is changed (with the one exception being Async readahead) the screen will update to the new information as soon as it has changed, also with having an input viewer for verification purposes if you so choose. At the end of the run you can even require showing settings and verifying they match what is on the screen.

I don’t think Duckstation should be scapegoated when it is clear you should put more work into understanding the software you want to use for your leaderboards instead of saying “We’ve tried nothing man and we are all out of ideas.” If you really want I could even make a demonstration video if you would want showing how it all works.

I think the better argument to lean into is why the Gamecube version would be the better choice instead of having two seperate emulator categories. I'm not super well versed on the RE2 versions but to my understanding they are both quite similar with the only thing the GC version is missing is quick menu's (again I could be wrong) while having a cutscene skip and door skip mod (which from the outside looks like a no brainer to want to run over a ps1 emulated version).

For me it's all about my love for the ps1 and I would have liked to compete with others who emulate ps1.

I found it weird that it was just 'stealth-deleted' and someone had to make a forum-thread about it to find out what happened. Definitely not the right way to go about things. If movement-speed is not affected, then there is no reason to not have a leaderboard for unrestricted ps1-emulation.

England

It wasn't 'stealth-deleted' i fixed some rules for multiple categories, moved dolphin doorskip from category extensions to the main GCN Emu leaderboard and archived duckstation(i can post the audit log recipients if you want to see this) during all of that (within 20 minutes of me archiving duckstation and still being busy with other changes) a post was made on the forums beating me to it, it was late so i said fuck it and went to bed.

3 people submitted runs to duckstation and it's been 3 months since creation with the most recent run being 27 days ago, it was dead on arrival, as i expected it to be because our "unrestricted" Ps emu category was the same (and also far from an even playing field)

In contrast if we look at PC Cutscene skip and dolphin doorskip or even just vanilla dolphin those are infinitely more popular because you spend less time on runs and thus completing more runs in a shorter space of time. Vanilla dolphin is quicker in real time than even the Vanilla PC version due to cutscene skipping. (It's also optional to skip the cutscenes because the cutscene time gets added onto the IGT eitherway)

If Ps Emulation had some kinda rich history to it, like it does on RE1 then we wouldn't even consider deleting it but the fact is, it doesn't. Even RE1 Ps Emulation isn't popular anymore and it was once THE category to run until PC version destroyed it.

Ps Emulation is dead for classic RE because theres so many better alternatives with the same barrier to entry.

Alas, I sorta figured this would happen at some point (unfortunately a lot sooner than later, too).

It's why, despite running this version almost every day, I wasn't even gonna bother sending in a run unless I knew it was one that was likely to stand atop the LB for a hot minute. It just sucks that as someone who plays this game inside and out SO often, it seems like unless I can get a PC at some point I'll never have a run on the boards haha. I know it seems like such a trivial thing to most of you, bc PC is like the de facto way a ton of games in the community are ran, but having to just invest in a whole ass PC to speedrun ONE game is a huge barrier to entry. It just is.

Duckstation finally allowed me to literally cast my phone to my TV, and boom there we go, running BH2 finally. And utilizing the screen capture function is how I would be able to bypass having to capture it w/ OBS, and blah blah blah all the crap I can't do bc I don't have a PC. I do gotta say, Kaladere above immediately pointed out the exact same thing I was gonna have questions about...bc I mean even doing runs on Android, literally any feature or function you change in Duckstation can be displayed on the screen at all times. Inputs can also be shown. So I really don't know how someone would get around the fact that any parameter you could manipulate for gain will be RIGHT THERE, displayed for any and all to see lol.

Idk...rant over I suppose haha. Not saying any of that to try and sway anyone's decisions or opinions, it's just that after ohhhh...about 7-8yrs of running this game and trying at various points to get a PC that will a) run the friggin' SN version to start with, and b) also not randomly screw up when trying to run SN and also have up the splits, OBS, etc etc it just gets disheartening is all. And Duckstation seemed like such a convenient way to finally get a run up on the boards, ANY run lol. I was just taking my time submitting a run so I could hopefully get one up that I wouldn't have to redo for a good bit.

Anyways, I respect the decision and as always, thanks to the Mods for the time you guys take to view & verify the runs, it's much appreciated 👏👏👏

I would not ignore what Kal said if the information shown is, indeed, enough to serve as proof that the settings are correct.

Having said that, if I were a runner of this emu category, I would not hold my own runs for too long. Otherwise, with no runs on the category it may seem that there is not much interest in running it.
