Cannonless "Beginner" Example Run and Notes

  • RNG Manip: The RNG Manip used is the same as Any%, dubbed "mini route", since we use it to get the mini mushroom in 5-Ghost House. However, it is pretty beneficial for Cannonless as well. The manip allows for (mostly) consistent RNG throughout the run, including better map movement and boss fights. This particular run uses the early fire route, which as the name implies, uses fire in early game. This RNG manip allows you to get either fire or shell in 1-2 from the Red Block, and provides a backup shell or two later in the run. The two major RNG bossfights, fish and Petey, usually give favorable results. World 8 map movement in particular is near perfect 100% of the time. At a high level, Worlds 1 and 5 can also produce near perfect map RNG. All runners are encouraged to set up RNG manip, as all can benefit from it.

  • QSG - Quick Slide Glitch - involves accelerating up to your max x-velocity, which is about 3 pixels/frame. Normally, sliding in the shell will result in a speed ~8% slower than this, but QSG actually bypasses the slower cap. To get QSG, you must have a slower speed than your max traditional shell speed. Run off of a ledge, and on the last couple (usually 3) frames, hold down, then down left (or down right if you're traveling left), as quickly as possible. You'll enter your shell, and accelerate faster than usual (so long as you hold left), and you should hit the ~3 P/F speed.

  • Regions and Cannonless: There are 2 spots in Cannonless where your game region matters: 2-3 and 8-6. The North American version is actually the "first" released version, while Europe, Japan, and Korea are equal in terms of gameplay. On NA copies of the game, you can clip into (but not through) sloped ceilings, such as the ones in 2-3. Clipping into the ceiling should be avoided if possible, so if you're on a NA or Australian copy of the game, try to avoid these ceilings. This was patched in later versions, so it is not a problem for them. In 8-6, the transition load is ~0.2 seconds faster on the NA/Aus copies of the game, and the reason is still unknown. Neither of these are reason enough to purchase a specific version of the game however.
