Can We Establish Some Speedrun Rules?

I just logged in for the first time to see what the times looked like for Nidhogg 2 since I'm really loving the game and might use it as the first game I ever try speedrunning but I'm unclear what the criteria is and how it is being considered between different platforms, if only the in game time is used (on P.C. this could be tricky if different people's systems run the game at different speeds, right?) or any other specifics that would disqualify a speedrun attempt. I wonder if more people might be motivated also to submit attempts if there was rules in place so the game felt a little more active and there would be a sense of more community and competition. Cheers!

I agree - some timing rules should be the norm. How 'bout it Kirby-Mod? As to the latency in the #1, it sure is there. Maybe slower running systems will simply make for longer runs? I'd be up for some attempts, just need to get some recording software from somewhere.

Edit: Well, after a bunch of tries, I don't think I'm very into this one. Also it doesn't seem to play nice with Borderless Gaming, and the igt pauses on the map and menus. I guess that's why the #1 vid is so much longer than the final time. So an rta category would make for more interesting watching at least. Incidentally, OBS is rad, and now I can start recording - shaaa!

How about using the same rules of 'Nidhogg'?

By the way,I submited a run 2 weeks ago.But the moderator,Kirbyrocket,hasn't been online for 3 months.And I can't contact him because Chinese network can't link Twitch,Twitter,Tumbir,Facebook,etc.

Can you help me to contact him? Please ask him to verify the run.Thank you very much.

Look at the top menu of the site under more... then help/contact. There is a link for moderators being inactive.

I've read the link for 'Game's moderators are inactive',and it says 'In the case of inactive game moderators, please attempt to contact them via social media to resolve the situation'.

Would you please help me to contact Kirbyrocket?Thank you.

I have no idea who this person is. Maybe contact site admin to help, or let it go and keep pressing for your own world record.

Edit: Maybe lobby to get them kicked for inaccessibility?

@UncleAdork I can do so this evening when I'm home from work.

I just sent him a direct message on twitter saying the following:

"hey! this is just a nudge to check out the forum for nidhogg 2 at speedrun.com we have questions about settings rules and expectations to make it clear what constitutes a legal run, how to determine timing if people's machines process the game differently, what if it's on console, etc. also someone has submitted a run and is hoping to have it approved. we look forward to having you join the conversation. cheers!"

Hopefully we will hear back soon. If not then we will have to contact the people from this website to ask them to help intervene.

Howdy everyone! Sorry for the delay, I've been really busy setting up for an esports event this weekend, so I will be updating all the rules shortly.

For now, the key things you want to remember are that all runs are measured by the in-game timer and must show the full uncut video with gameplay being visible at all times. OBS is not required for recording due to aiding in accessibility but is preferred due to quality Henceforth, for runs that may stand out from others, such as what seems to be a graphical glitch on my run, I will explain in a greater detail next week once I return.

As for why my Nidhogg 2 run is much longer of a video than the run is itself, Nidhogg 2 doesn't run well on my current PC, but I still am capable of running it at 60 FPS when reducing as many graphical effects as possible without destroying the run—just not when recording with OBS at the same time. You can find my specs below to have an understanding as to why this happens. Otherwise, you can even use a cell phone to record your run so as long as it is focused on the gameplay at all times, the camera stays stationary for easily available view, and the raw footage is completely uncut.

CPU: i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz GPU: Intel HD Graphics 2000 RAM: 6.00 GB (5.88 GB usable)

Furthermore, when I return next week, I will be providing a guide to reduce the loss of FPS that may occur within the game. I currently play at the lowest graphics settings possible alongside windowed mode within the game's UI, but there are more settings you can turn off within the game's files that will reduce loss of FPS.

Thank you all so much for your patience, and I'll see you soon!

I understand accessibility by allowing anyone to run the game on P.C. at any frames per second but this opens the runs to being gamed by people who are looking for an advantage. It makes speedrunning competitively less accessible to people who run the game at 60fps an easier for every frame per second less.

Then it seems the best thing would be to set different records cause it seems open to exploitation to allow people running the game at 60fps to compete with people who can underclock their system to run at, for example, 7fps.

Maybe setup a 60fps category and a AnyFPS category? Also I don't see any rules posted yet (which I feel should be taking the lead from other well known games that may deal with the same issue in terms of what is standard for speedrunning when dealing with variant FPS between runners).

Also, categories based on different consoles make sense as well, no?

Finally another idea may be to just have it run off of a classic timer set up by the streamer visible to a viewer which is very common if there is variance in FPS instead of using the in game timer (since different FPS in a game like Nidhogg changes the reaction times completely and deflates people's run times, again leaving it open to cheating from bad actors).

I am interested in running this game but as it stands at the moment running my game as it naturally runs at a 60+FPS I don't see how I could run against people who are playing a different game that is running in slow motion. If that is to be the case, then a guide to how to lower my FPS down to whatever the minimum is established by the rules would be appreciated.

Thanks!
