Used the $1200 sword from stage 5; didn't bother with the ones past it and feel they aren't necessary. Used orbs on the world 6 boss, and got lucky with the correct upgrade for them then. Froze the final boss by jumping in the room towards the right. Tried to avoid grinding for hearts and money as much as I could.
