Controls: D-Pad = Walk/Run/Climb Up on D-Pad = Enter door Down = Duck A button = Tail whip B button = Jump Start = Pause Select = Check status/ Eat flies/ Run on the spot (while in running state) Hold B button after jump = Tail bounce Hold B + Down while running = Karate Kick
You can buffer all inputs in this game, so tail bouncing is very easy (just hold B before hitting the ground, it's pretty lenient). You can also buffer holding up to enter doors so you can get frame perfect entrances.
However, movement can be tricky in this game.
There is no single button devoted to running, Gex will run automatically after a certain amount of time walking (about a second). A lot of movement in this game is around preserving your running state, as otherwise Gex will need to gather speed through walking again which loses time. To start running on a small area (like a platform where you wont have enough room to start running by walking straight), the best way is to hold right and tap left (you should oscillate left and right).
Ways to lose your running state:
- Stopping
- Running off a low ledge (jumping off is fine)
- Falling from a significant height (Gex will go flat like a pancake)
- Going through a door (unavoidable)
- Getting hit by an enemy
- Using your tail whip mid air (however if you use it while airborne but close to the ground you'll be fine)
- Using a karate kick
Maintaining your running state while staying still (3 methods):
- Holding select while running and then stopping (you should run on the spot and can resume running at any time)
- Performing consecutive tail bounces
- Quickly oscillate left and right (you'll move a little bit side to side)
Maintaining running state while going off a platform:
- Jumping off a ledge of low height
- Running off a ledge of medium height
The most recently pressed D-pad direction has priority, so you can hold your direction and press or tap the opposite direction to make fine adjustments to your movement (especially useful midair)
Sometimes you may notice that you can't jump. This can be quite annoying. It happens after falling off a small ledge sometimes. When you notice that this has happened and it's not letting you jump, performing a tail whip will allow you to jump again.
Unfortunately karate kicks are basically useless but you can use them while entering a door for swag purposes.
