List Of Things ELO Has To Fix
Iowa, USA

I’ll make a list on this forum. I’ll start by adding two things. Be able to see pending messages Have messages load faster

@Walgrey There's a bug where getting a game request accepted will always put the game 2nd in your followed games list if it's set to alphabetical order. I reported it a while ago and it is still there.

There's no way to tell when someone has posted on a series forum without checking. There's 0 notifications for it, and it's not like users frequently check the series to see new forum posts. Small solution would to allow people to follow series for the sole purpose of having a "Followed Series" section appear when you click on "Forums".

Verifiers can now no longer access the Moderation tab and remove themselves as verifiers due to a bug.

 • Flair box (before anyone else says it)

 • Sub-categories are still "one-or-all".

 • Search function in Mod Hub (eg. runs from X user, rejected/verified by X moderator) (Yes I realize this is now less fixing and more recommending new features, but still, it would really improve things a lot)

 • Make games disable comments by default.

 • WR progression graphs are broken.

 • Notifications for comments need to exist.

 • The recent runs section doesn't specify if a run is an IL or not. For example, some games have an Any% category for both full-game and ILs. However, they both appear as just Any% in Recent Runs, which can cause confusion.

@Garsh I think it would be cool to have more notification options for followed series such as new moderators added, new game added, etc.

On a side note, we need Beta testers and volunteer forum moderators. This isn’t necessarily a bug for Elo to fix but it would eliminate some major issues before they occur (severe update bugs and forum spam).

@Pear Elo needs to get rid of the sliding bar and forced drop-down categories on mobile leaderboards.

Bump to fix the terrible mobile leaderboard reformat.

At least on mobile, the mod list for a leaderboard is incredibly slow to update, if it’s even able to update at all.

@Viper I wish I could see the runs of users who have over 2k runs on their profile

@Tutterey I would appreciate if there were curators (forum mods) added to games they can delete threads edit them lock them etc

And remove the dropdown for the leaderboard tab for games that only have full game/il categories

@SioN long variable names force the variable column on the leaderboard to become "..." and youll have to hover over every one of the individually to check what it is

@swag also allow mods to turn off the thing on the right tab saying exactly their total sum of mod verifications/rejections and how many mod actions they have

@Merl_ add IP bans please

@MrMonsh Moderators already are required to have 2 factor authentication on, you could just include this as a 2FA method to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Having forum mods in different timezones certainly wouldn't hurt, so I don't see why not. They could even be volunteers like a few previous mods in the event Elo doesn't feel like opening up the piggybank.

@KasumiGin I don't have much knowledge about cyber security to make an assumption, but would it be fine if SMS was used just for commenting rights and DM rights, as it is the only form of social interaction on the website, but not for direct account access? I know, it would be an extra hassle, would be an extra step for moderators to comment on stuff ( While I honestly think it's not a big deal, but i'm not a moderator to have an opnion on that) and the phone numbers are a sensitive info nowdays with everything connecting to our phones, but it is one of the only ways I can think of efficiently stopping one person who isn't educated on how to fake a SIM and get SMS using that, and since in order to use a SIM service you need to provide your Social Security Number (at least that's how it is in my country), even buying multiple SIM chips wouldn't do the trick.

Yes, SMS isn't safe at all for account protection, but I've seen stuff like Discord and (I think) twitch have limitations for certain servers or channels, where in some of them the moderator can add a 2FA requirement where the person needs to register their phone number and input a code from SMS, which allows them to talk in the server. I believe this is separete from the regular Discord 2FA for account access, which is why I suggested SMS. The main issue I see is not trusting the website with your number, which is fair and I probably wouldn't either.

@hahhah42 another potential solution would be offering a report button for individual posts and putting a setting on new/low activity accounts that automatically and provisionally bans them if a sufficient number of people report one of their posts (say 5 or so). This would catch most bots & trolls, but avoid letting trolls wield it against established accounts—5 of us could report the stalker and get his latest account banned within minutes, but he wouldn't be able to create 5 accounts to ban his target.

They could add TOTP authentication as an alternate to the email authentication, allowing moderators to choose between them. That was my request in the thread linked above. Plus, there are desktop options for it, including Authy.

Fair, but it would be nice to contribute a little.

 • There's a bug where getting a game request accepted will always put the game 2nd in your followed games list if it's set to alphabetical order. I reported it a while ago and it is still there. (Currently the only way to fix this is by customizing the order, then setting it back to alphabetical, but it's a pain to do when I have to do it all the time) (However, the last time I did this, it seemed to fix itself after a couple hours, and I didn't do anything)

Man, I'm going on 5 years here; while there has always been updates, there has always been a number of issues that just have never been resolved. And while, I noticed the recent changes, I didn't notice the whole comments things, etc. and other issues that have arisen recently as due to the change.

The fact that messages actually got implemented and working on this website blows my mind everyday.

I doon't have lots of hopes for fixes for all the things you mention, but man it would be great if ELO actually did address a lot of these issues (which they probably didn't even know about when they bought this hellsite, lol), they could really make the site better than it ever was. It's disappointing to see the gaffes though.

@Merl_ Agreed. I sent a suggestion to implement IP bans through support hub earlier today as well and I hope the staff considers it. Even if IP bans are possible to evade they provide an extra wall for ban evading and is a basic feature every website needs to have IMO.

IP bans solve absolutely nothing. Many people may use the same IP - two speedrunners in the same family with only one being the 'bad person'. Many people have shifting IP adresses that eventually move to another person, which wouldn't be pleased with this. Many people also use 4G/5G mobile Internet, which in some countries uses the same IP for most users (like in my hometown). Some use VPNs, possibly even to avoid government censorship in places like China, which may have the same exact IP. That would harm them all because of one weirdo.

Ip bans do not solve any problems. They only cause problems that would need to be fixed later. Maybe new users with an account that is less than a week old should not be allowed to create more than one forum post per hour. That would force spammers to create a new account every time they wanted to post, which makes them more annoyed.

You have a fair point Reverse. I've thought of the issues surrounding IP bans myself and understand why it's doesn't entirely fix the issue with ban evading and multi accounts, and creates the possibility of innocent people being affected. However it's a shame this website doesn't have any sort of measure to guarantee someone can't create multiple accounts manually to spam the forums, which is why I suggested IP bans since it seems like the most basic measure the staff could take, even if not the best one. But as you said it does create some possibly issues and its not ideal. A better method is necessary, I agree.

Edit: Just to add to what I said above, I apologize if suggesting/supporting IP bans was an ignorant opnion from my part, as the scale of the consequences IP Bans could bring didn't immediately cross my mind when thinking about it.

I've seen several people suggest some sort of limitation for forum posts, like a 1 week delay for comments, or at least 1 or more runs for it (Though this would make trolls and spammer bots attack boards which would be another problem). Perhaps locking someone's commenting rights behind a verification method like a cellphone number SMS message would be good since I suppose you can't easily get multiple phone numbers? I don't know how easy it is to fake that or how safe the method is, however.

Actually, there's nothing preventing a person from creating a bunch of accounts at the same time, so they could very well create a few sock accounts at once and just have to wait 7 days to have them enabled all together, effectively bringing us back to where we started.

It's certainly a start and it'd be better to what we currently have, but it's a bit of a band-aid restriction if you ask me.

I think this is actually a much better approach to this issue. Of course it's not fool-proof and people could eventually find a way around it, but it's a pretty decent deterrent.

I do not like the cellphone idea. Being able to post in the forums is something moderators should be able to do without having to jump through extra hoops, and aside from that I don't trust the site's security enough to give them that sort of personal info.
...aside from that I don't trust the site's security enough to give them that sort of personal info.
I'll concede that is a great point, but short of being able to identify new users somehow there's no way to tell them appart and thus any solutions we come up with will always work as a blanket restriction that would affect non-offending users as well (and most likely will always have a way around them).

Perhaps instead of SMS we could look elsewhere, but it'd need to be something that unequivocally identifies the user (ie. that isn't easily created in 2 minutes like a mail/google account) or else it'd serve no real purpose, and I suspect that anything that complies with that description would still raise this sort of concerns.
Moderators already are required to have 2 factor authentication on, you could just include this as a 2FA method to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
While I'm on the record as supporting more 2fa options, SMS is easily the weakest and should be avoided.

I think the best solution would be to add forum moderators, in particular finding some who are available during the off hours when the rest of staff aren't around. That would eliminate the clear stretch of each day when bots & trolls can get their posts up for hours on end. We shouldn't overreact to one persistent, obnoxious individual by imposing extra hassle on everyone else who actually uses the site.
