This has been brought up 500 times and the argument against boils down to the site isn't designed to support high score stuff.
Other half of the argument I forgot until now. There's plenty of other high score websites dedicated to high score stuff. So there's really no need for src to double dip into an area it's not meant for that is already well covered.
@gamehasheZ The suggestion isn't a bad one in my opinion GameHasheZ, but the timing is awful. The site is going through new ownership and is rolling out an entire smorgasbord worth of new tools, settings and features. So I don't think they are going to jump on any major changes like this just right now. For the time being, I'm just hoping they get this one straightened out and working well the way they want it, and after thats been rolled out, beta tested, fully rolled out and patched further (months from now probably), it'd be cool if they looked at something like this.
As it stands now TG is the only real player outside of specific game forums like donkey kong forum; and their rules are super strict (have to have disconnected cam to show yourself turning on physical console and inserting legit physical copy of game while showing all hookups, then your run, and it also has to be the NTSC-U/C version of any game run). I do like how all TG members review a submission and give it an upvote or downvote tho; really gives a sense of a complete community the way it's set up. Too bad for their poor history. Maybe Jace can bring it back from the brink? Either way SRC is primed to take that real estate for the taking if they went for the points games too...but it would be a lot of work.
He got his records back with Guinness. He was not and never will be restored on Twin Galaxies. And Jace is doing a shit ton of amazing work in restoring the company's reputation. Still has some way to go but it is many times better than it was just a few years ago. As a side note, I think you're really underselling the reputation of some of the existing high score sites. Yes they're not as big, but part of that is simply because the high score community isn't as big, and is fairly tight-knit.
Let's not forget the name of the site here...
Why don't we make high scores being part of the website too?
At this rate, games like Guitar Hero, Just Dance, Friday Night Funkin will have space to get challenges to be made and more players will wanna join this platform. This will be very helpful for Video Games industry
(This will make Speedrun.com have to rebrand the name if it happens)
@Walgrey To be fair, the OP did acknowledge this
Just because this website is not designed for high scores, it doesn't mean it's totally impossible. Maybe they have the potential to make high scores stuff to be available for this website. This is about time but I know it may happen someday
high score runs are the exact opposite of speedruns. they're the last thing that should be on src, even if there is retro crossover appeal.
High Scores was a MAJOR discussion a little while ago, there was a lot of input from community, Pac, and the owner of one of the High Score sites, CyberScore. And the consensus was that High Scores do not belong on SR.C.
Speedruns have SR.C High Scores have sites like CyberScore and HighScore.com
it's counterproductive to try and merge the two together
Even if it was something we all really wanted (which as DarQ noted, it isn't), it would not make any sense to put any time or resources into that in the near future. The site's having a hard enough time just keeping up with the needs of the speedrunning community, adding the weight of high scores onto that is just not a good idea right now.
