I think this is actually important, and I didn't find anything on the FAQs or online that quite answered it so I was hoping to have the speed run communities input.
My main question is what does one do to insure that they have good recordings of their run?
I recently started using Twitch, because in order to submit records they need to be recorded that way. Makes perfect sense to me.
The problem I ran into was, that one of the games I was attempting and achieved WR for, the recording in Twitch was not good. At parts it seems to drop frames of the recording. My guess is that my connection was bad, I have since then always make sure to close anything that uses bandwidth. My connection is actually pretty great aside from what seems to be that one game.
However, I have a worry that the issue, a spike or drop in connection could cause such an error again or if ever the internet should go out... ⊙﹏⊙Should I record with OBS recording? Is there another record program that uses little resources?
Here is the run I am talking about for more context:
If I was asked to verify someones run that had jumps in it like the run I played live on twitch. Then I most likely would decline it, so I think it is reasonable to decline my own run. Am I being to hard on myself? What programs or extra actions should be taken to ensure a run is recorded? Any and all ideas, advice, and suggestions welcome. <(_ _)>
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I look forward to your responses. Let's discuss.
you don't have to stream to twitch to record your runs. you can do a local recording and them upload them to anywhere that allows video upload.
Yeah I would advise against just streaming your attempts, if you are going for a WR I'd say for your own sake and sanity you should be making local recordings too. Nothing worse than that feeling of finally beating a record but not having a sufficient enough video clip to submit as the new WR.
In this case I do want to stream the runs. Otherwise I would not have been asking the question.
If I am going to record, is using the OBS recording function sufficient? Any software recommendations? That's what I was hoping to take away from this.
I didn't say you shouldn't stream you runs, I said you that you shouldn't just stream them, as in streaming shouldn't be the only way the run is being recorded. OBS has options to both stream and locally record. I don't stream much but I usually stream with OBS and if I have a good run I just clip it with Shadowplay, personally.
Twan_Jones, that comment on not streaming was addressing the post before yours.
It sounds like recording with OBS is pretty simple. So I will use that option now.
I will check out Shadowplay later, Is it just for editing?
Thank you for the information! Keep them coming if you know of other options.
I always use obs cause it takes very little on the part of the pc and does not require internet.
OBS' Local Recording function is perfectly adequate for video quality, yes. It all entirely depends on what your own video settings are like, but it's capable of very crisp capture.
I don't tend to drop frames, so what you see in my VODs is what you get, and the streamed/locally recorded footage is equal. With that in mind, my stream settings are:
720p 60FPS 6000 bitrate
And a lot of the time it's difficult to distinguish any quality loss at all in my recordings, as I don't tend to play games that are higher than 720p natively.
Thank you for the setup information!
Actually recently I have been recording with OBS and it is very good. The quality seems a little lower, but since I am playing mainly older generation games, aside from Dragon Ball FighterZ. It is not an issue. Actually 1 hour of recording on OBS seems to equal only sligly over a GB. Fantastic. Thank you all so much!!!
Does anyone have recommended settings? 6000 is standard.
The default for me was:
video bitrate 2500 encoder software x264 audio bitrate 160.
Can you all help recommend a good setting like Drakodan did??? Thank you for all your time in helping me get this going right, so far I have already been able to record some WR (correctly this time). My hope if for people to enjoy the stream and videos.
