Michael Chan's Cheating

@MichaelChan, you're one of the people I look up to you the most, and, with the evidence, I truly do not think you have cheated anymore.

However, I think it is only fair that I mention something that you seem to have glossed over. You countered all of the points made by @speeeeeeedy, except for one. In your 4:07.95 run, the timer is very off. Obviously, it's going to be a bit off from the one in game, but considering it was an entire second off...

Was this accidental? As said before, I don't think you have cheated, but you have yet to provide a good reason for this.

United States

I didn't think so. Is it a problem with the out of game timer?

United States

Oh, I'm sorry, I misunderstood. My bad.

United States

As mentioned before, the load time inconsistencies have been in Michael Chan's livestreams. @Sir_Farcelot This is something everybody kinda forgot about. A long time ago (more like 2-3 weeks) there was a forum that had a website that the mods were going to use to time Fullgame% runs. Did this not work out? I think it should be used, but if you have a reason to not use it, mods, I would like to know :) (If you are already using it, sorry, my bad)

United States

Well, I believe the decision ultimately lies with the mods.

United States

I think proof enough would be for michael to record himself packaging appel and showing us the load time between levels 3 and 4. @Sir_Farcelot I was about to say the same thing... :)

If a recording of myself packaging appel and showing the load time is all it takes to prove myself... then, yeah, why not. I'll do it!

Hong Kong

Here's the video - I'll explain the stuff, I guess.

Basically, I packaged it again and then opened the file and played through L3 twice for the menu transition.

The packaging is quite self-explanatory.

The reason I did two runs though**

  1. First one, I didn't spam click on 'CONTINUE', just to show that the project doesn't have any tweeks and works exactly like a normal Appel (even tho the next one is working exactly like a normal Appel as well)

  2. Second one, I did spam click on 'CONTINUE' just like the any% run, I'd say the clicking quite the same as the ones during any%. Note that this isn't from an autoclicker, but merely an around 8 clicks-per-second speed, in which an autoclicker is just honestly the same.

I also did quite some excessive movements, just to prove I'm not doing any shenanigans.

I'll even put the file I downloaded in this video as well right here.

Well as soon as I said that, I just realised speedrun.com doesn't allow it, so I'll just put it on google drive and put the link here >.< https://drive.google.com/file/d/1G1ihpCddwSbK3GCj3h-8ad5tFsEOCav0/view?usp=sharing

Hope that answers everything. Moderators, please go through these, thanks!

Oh and yes, for autoclickers, as I think I said multiple times on my Discord - Yes, I do use it, but no, I don't. Let me explain.

First of all, let me start of by saying autoclickers is a perfectly fine strategy for any speedrunning games. Hope you all acknowledge that.

Second of all, setting up the autoclicker is not easy as I didn't pay for it. And also, it lags, as it's running in the background at like 120fps. Not only is it really bad for the computer, but actually lags the game for a bit, and thus also increasing my speedrun time. That's why, I only use it when I haven't touched the computer in a long time and such it runs smoothly, and I'll stop using it after twenty-something minutes.

For any%... I don't vividly remember if I used autoclicker or not, but I'm pretty sure as well I did not, which, even if I did, please do acknowledge that it's a perfectly fine strategy.

I couldn't get it to work but i use linux, however i don't think your operating system affects appel, but your browser probably does. what browser do you use?

United States

I think this is a reasonable explanation.  I've been using the turbowarp packager for a while now and I haven't seen any differences from the usual scratch project. (I use the NW.js Windows application) It's just a .exe file so it just copies the code from the project and runs it as a separate program that doesn't require an internet connection. I haven't seen any differences from the usual project.

I was a bit hasty in the beginning, assuming that I had never had that "Glitch" and that Michael cheated. After thinking about it for a while, I remembered something like that happened to me a while ago, but I thought nothing of it. Personally, this is not a repeatedly occurring event for me. It's probably happened once or twice. Don't ask me why it happened, I just specifically remember it happened on level 7 in a weird way.

I would agree that interpolation probably does not affect "glitches" in this game because it merely increases framerate without making the game go faster. But I can't. There have been several instances when I turned interpolation on and weird things started happening. Things like side jumping when I did a wall jump, wall jumping through walls, and other weird things. (In retrospect sometimes things like these happened in custom levels)

Ultimately I think that Michael and others have shown enough evidence to show that he is not cheating, but it really is up to the mods.

@speeeeeeedy I use Chrome and I have found no differences between it and Microsoft Edge. At least in regards to Appel's gameplay. (If that helps)

Hong Kong

I use Microsoft Edge to play through the packaged project (because a lot of people use chrome and it overloads the server, causing lag, whereas nobody used microsoft edge)

I'm pretty sure that everything I can prove and everything I had to prove is perfectly finished. So, I expect my run to be up back on the podium just like any other non-malicious runs. Thank you.

@MichaelChan Can you see if the bug happens on chrome?

Normally if you are ever caught cheating you are banned from playing the game forever. But in this case you happen to have a big yt channel so everybody likes you and nobody wants you banned, so when you came back with an insane run everybody went crazy and for some reason the mods accepted it. And now there is suspicion about your new runs even though you have already been banned, so if you want your runs accepted you'll have to come up with some good proof that you didn't cheat or I'll assume you are still a cheater.

New Standards of Proof

Due to a recent cheating situation, I feel that top runs should have more proof.

  1. Any top 10 full game runs now needs a video of at least 20 minutes of attempts submitted along with it.

  2. any top 50% individual level submission now must have the replay code in the description or, if it's too lo
