Hello mods,
Unfortunately my YT channel was banned and none of the run links work anymore. I don't want to wait for this to be resolved as it never may with YT. I reuploaded the run to Twitch. Is it possible for you to just change the link in the submission or should I resubmit the run?
The video is now here:
Cheers, Pawel

Yeah, it was kind of surprising to me too. I ran against your run and I noticed it there. Not sure if this happens throughout the run but there was a significant difference at the beginning. I stopped the recording before I showed the IGT but I took a screenshot. Sub 1 hour is easy so when I try that I will include the IGT in the video. Thanks!
Hello. I just submitted a run I did on my PS4. Would it be possible to add it as another platform? Also, it seems that the load times are much longer on the PS4 than they are on the Switch. Maybe it would be worth it to put the in-game timer as a column in the leaderboards? I don't expect this game to have a long speedrunning career but I would appreaciate if you considered those suggestions ;)
I'm playing on the NES Classic which uses HDMI so there is some input lag. I felt it more playing Contra on this hardware and on a Famicom but yes, the visual cues are different if there's input lag. What worked for me for the bat crit was looking off-screen and catching the bat's movement with my peripheral vision and whipping then :) It might sound stupid but it worked. I've been struggling with this lately in my whip only runs but I'm not practicing that part that much.
Great write-up. Too bad it doesn't help with my awful mashing speed :P
Can you share some of the insights as to why it's not predictable? Does this mean it's not a 'simple' global timer? Or is it unknown when the timer starts? Or something more complicated than that? :)
Looking forward to what you figure out. This part is often one of the most stressful of the run so it would be nice to have some control over it ;)
I just watched the TAS video that Angrylanks uploaded and noticed that it does a pause buffer when dealing with the three horizontal flames in Energy Zone:
Is this a viable non-TAS strat or does it depend too much on the current cycle of the flames?
On a related note, is it difficult to determine the current cycle of the flames? Is there some magic behind it? Would it be enough to know how long the cycle takes and match it to the time one starts the stage? This probably requires some maths as I don't think the cycle takes a nice number of, say 10 seconds ;) but there is enough time from the start of the stage to the flames to know which part of the cycle one will bump into.
Thank you for adding the category and accepting my run. I appreciate it!
Just a small little thing. Would it be possible to add PS4 as one of the allowed platforms and change the platform of my run? Sorry to bother you again.
So far there doesn't seem to be a lot of buzz around this game but I hope it changes in the future as it's a really good platformer and it has built-in time challenges which might invite new people to speedrunning.
I'm mostly focus on retro games, as far as speedrunning goes, but I do trophy guides for PS4 and I had a lot of fun going for the speedrun trophies in this game.
One of them requires the player to beat all the bonus challenges in fewer than 45 minutes. I thought this would be a good idea for an extra category. I streamed my attempts at getting this trophy and I would gladly go back to improve my time if more people decided to join ;)
Hirexen, now you say that. Once we start playing you'll wish for me to game over so you can get a good run going :)
In all seriousness, though. I know my voice doesn't mean much among more experienced runners but since I've been named by one I feel that I can add my 2 cents. If the category is called coop it means working together and that's the only way I would enjoy running it.
I've been recently shown a clip of one of Bednak's previous PBs where at the very start he shows a strange glitch in level 4, very casually mentions a 'wrong warp' and then resets the game.
Does anyone know anything about how and why this happens and if there's any potential of some time save there? The video has been posted in September 2017 and I'd think if it was something interesting I would have seen this in the recent months but I haven't and I'm just wondering what this is all about.

Those were some great explanations. I just got sub 12 a couple of days ago and you're right that the time save on the final boss fight is huge but you do save a lot of time on the way by executing smaller things better.
I'm going to try to put together a video guide/tutorial for the game this week which is aimed at beginners such as myself with a goal of 12 minutes in mind. I will not go into details about the more advanced strats you need for WR but 12 minutes is something I thing is within reach of most runners.
I know now where my confusion comes from. What I was describing was different than what is happening with the different platforms. While I was talking about frame density for a given duration of video content, the original NES literally puts out more content in the same timespan, i.e. the game is 'happening' faster than on the mini or the VC. While it theoretically gives me more time to react (although I would argue it's below the human reaction time threshold :) ) it costs me time in the long run as the game takes longer to play the same amount of content.

I beat the game once casually, ages ago. Not going for WR anytime soon so it shouldn't be a problem, thanks :)
I'm always confused by this because just changing the fps doesn't change the time that passes, just the number of frames that are displayed, at least in traditional video. If you play a 10 minute movie at 25fps or 50fps it always lasts 10 minutes, there's just more data, or detail, in those 10 minutes. If anything, more fps means you have more time to react because there are more frames. This reasoning might be completely wrong when it comes to games and/or speedrunning and I'd like to know how it's explained in this context.
Additionally, I don't think I'll reach top times any time soon, if I start running this, so the time I'd lose with the different framerate should be insignificant for a long while :)
I believe I just got the same comment in a thread about Contra, thanks :)
