Hi everyone, welcome to the Category Request Master Thread! This will be the go-to place to request new categories or support other people's category requests. With enough community support they'll be added to the leaderboards as either a misc or main category.

==How to request a category==

Reply to this thread with the following things:

  • Category name
  • Timing method
  • Rules
  • Example run

The things listed here are proposals and could be changed after community discussion, but we'd like the requester to at least think about these things ahead of time and have an example run. Posts that are severely lacking in details will be deleted to keep the thread clean.

==When does my category get added?==

A leaderboard is for comparison, so we'd like to avoid having leaderboards with no times or only 1 time by having other people support the idea before adding to the leaderboards. How much support is needed depends entirely on what's being requested. An established Wii category like “All Chaos Emeralds” will need far less support than a category like “All Super Sonic Stages” which barely even has IL's on the board right now. The length of the category also plays a factor here, people are less likely to invest time in a 3 hour category than a 30 minute one so requirements should be adjusted for that reality.

==How do I support a category?==

Run it! And then post your run in this thread. If you are of the opinion that it should have a different ruleset than the proposed one, be sure to mention that alongside your run as well of course.

New categories are more likely to get added with more runs and Misc categories are more likely to move up to Main with more runs, so run!

==What's the difference between Main and Misc?==

Site functionality wise, the Misc categories are collected under a little drop down menu, while the Main categories get their own tabs on the main page. The main argument to use this is to prevent the page from becoming cluttered. This is especially important for the site's new layout, if the number of Main categories gets too high, the site will turn them into a drop down menu as well, hurting the visibility of all other main categories. Visibility is the other argument, we'd like the most competetive categories to be the most visible ones and we'd like categories that actually reach the credits to be more visible than ones that cut out a smaller set of stages.

Most if not all requested categories will start out as Misc and only move to Main after it receives enough support/competition. The amount it needs again depends on the kind of category it is. A well known category type like a 100% collect-a-thon would be put up as a Main category with less runs than a smaller subset of stages like Game Land, but with its short length Game Land could be the one to reach the required amount of competition sooner. We'll just take it as things go and adjust the boards accordingly.

Hi everybody!

Been a while since the last update and we wanted to let you know about some recent and coming changes to the leaderboards.

  1. We recently updated the “No extended pausing” rule for Egg Shuttle to be a little more detailed. While the timing method technically allows for breaks between stages, we wanted to emphasize that it should still be considered a single segment run. It now reads: “No extensive or frequent pausing. This will be judged on a case by case basis, mods may either make a note or reject entirely if you pause too much. This is a single segment category, do treat it as such despite the timing method.”

  2. Every category and stage in the game will require you to fill out the fps max that you're playing on from here on out. There will be 3 settings for this: 30, 60 and 144 (max). Ever since launch we have found more and more things directly tied to the framerate, so adding a variable should make it easier to filter the leaderboards to your playstyle of choice to see how you compare. Runs already submitted will be edited to show the proper value over the coming time, but it will take some time to get everything done.

  3. Adding onto the fps variable, the PC version will get some additional rules as it's the only version that can be capped to any desired setting. While it is technically possible for the PC version to be capped at any amount of fps in between these 3 settings as well, it is far more managable to limit it to these 3 to cover Switch at 30fps, the other consoles at 60fps and the game's intended max at 144fps. You are required to play at your chosen setting for the entire run and we ask that you pick a setting that your PC can handle mostly consistently during the gameplay sections. Fps drops during loading screens are normal, so don't worry about that and with the game's performance issues on the current patch, we will be lenient with the occassional lag as well. To properly enforce these rules we will start requiring a visible fps counter for all runs done on the PC version. This will also be nice to have for researching any weird happenings that people might encounter as we can instantly spot any fps drops that might relate to what happens. Any fps counter is allowed as long as they are visible in your stream/video. We will have a small grace period where we'll still accept runs without a counter, just in case people still have unsubmitted video they recorded before the rule change, just mention it in your submission. If you need help setting up your desired cap or an fps counter, you can consult this guide: https://www.speedrun.com/sonic_colors_ultimate/guide/5s6h6

  4. We will soon start experimenting with the timing method for Any%. It would only feel right to do so with this game's vast loading time differences between consoles and even between different PC's. The first step to doing so will be to list the calculated sum of the stage times as a seperate In-Game Time column next to the Real Time (with the leaderboards still prioritizing Real Time). This method unfortunately doesn't cover any of the overworld movement, but it would be significantly more managable than manually calculating Time without Loads and Jujstme's autosplitter already does all the calculating for any PC runs of Any% (though we'll still have to calculate manually to verify). To make the manual calculations more managable on the mods we will also install a treshold and only calculate In-Game Time for runs that are faster than 1 hour and 40 minutes Real Time. As time goes on, depending on how the mods experience the workload, we might do stuff like adjust the treshold, switch over to In-Game Time entirely, go back to Real Time entirely or try something else. For help in manually calculating the In-Game Time, you can make use of this website: http://www.unitarium.com/time-calculator

That is all for now. Thanks for bearing with us while we're trying to figure out this messy game as we go and thanks for all your contributions so far!

USB loaders are fine for IL's and Egg Shuttle as they only use IGT. We do not allow them for RTA categories though.

When it comes to completionist categories this game offers plenty of options, so feel free to run whatever you feel like and if it catches on with other runners we can make a board for it.

For the time being the main focus has been on researching the ports, so we haven't pro-actively made a leaderboard for collect-a-thon categories, but we're very much willing to add stuff after people start running it :)

Just a heads-up, might wanna wait until a patch before doing runs like this though. People are having enough trouble making it through an Egg Shuttle run without the game crashing, let alone a long category like what you described!

Hi everybody,

First off let me say that we're thrilled about the amount of activity and interest this game has already gathered in the early access days. Very exciting!

Now on to business: Now that the game is fully released, the leaderboards are officially open and we will start accepting submitted runs.

BIG GIANT DISCLAIMER While we'd like to promote competition by not keeping submissions closed any further, there are some ongoing things that are very important to keep in mind as they could change the rules and retro-actively invalidate your run:

    • A patch is on the way, which could change how the game operates. Example: if you get a PB with rail flinging and it ends up getting patched, it could invalidate your run depending on rule changes
    • There is still a lot of investigation and discussion being done regarding different framerates and the mechanical changes they bring. If these are still present after the patch, they are likely to impact the rules and your run could be invalidated

IMPORTANT: IF YOU RUN ON PC, FUTURE PROOF YOUR RUN! If the framerate differences are still there post patch (which is likely) then one of the options we're discussing is a framerate cap variable on submissions. Since PC is the only platform with multiple framerate caps, we would enforce this by having a framerate counter displayed on your video/stream. Please consider setting this up now to significantly reduce the chance of your submissions being invalid after future rule changes.

Apologies that this is the way it is, but as you all know, the current state of the game is a mess and we're trying to make the best of it in a way where we don't have to keep submissions closed until a patch hits.

Thanks to all involved in documenting glitches, framerate nonsense and version differences, you're the real troopers!

Hey folks,

This announcement thread is for those who only look at the site and aren't in the Sonic discord.

With the amount of game differences seen in trailers and showcases so far, it only feels right for Ultimate to have its own leaderboards, rather than trying to integrate it into these existing boards. This way the original version can be preserved and competetive for those still interested in running on Wii and Ultimate gets to have a fresh start as its own speedgame. The boards can be found here: https://www.speedrun.com/sonic_colors_ultimate

Hey folks,

The early release of Sonic Colours Ultimate is less than a week away, so I've prepared this page ahead of time for any early runners of the game. That said there's a couple of things to keep in mind for running at the game's initial release.

  1. Even though submissions are open starting sept 3rd, none will be accepted until the game is fully released on sept 7th. If unexpected game differences are encountered upon launch that require rule discussion, this grace period might be extended until said discussion has reached a conclusion.

  2. Full-game category-wise I've only added Egg Shuttle and Any% for now as they are safe bets for what people will run. I have however held off on making an All Chaos Emeralds board for now as I feel it's better to wait and see where the player interest lies when it comes to collect-a-thon categories. Other than that IL boards exist for both normal Sonic and Super Sonic just as in the original.

Happy gaming :)

As long as the quality is good enough that we can tell what's going on and there is no interruptions in the feed, you can use whatever you want. Can be a capture card, can be a webcam pointed at the screen.

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

Kinda missed the part where you said yes to those. Added them for now, though again I'm skeptical they'll do well.

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

Alright I've added the subcategories to all the relevant stages (any stage that features Avatar)

I've decided to go a different approach when it comes to the wispons however: I'm giving every single one a trial run. As of right now, they all have a subcategory on every single stage.

I will give all of them a chance to develop an interest and check in every now and then to see what's going on. If needed I will then delete the boards retro-actively if one of the following is true:

  • It is empty or only has 1 run for a long time
  • The strats don't actually make note-worthy use of the chosen wispons (example: a tag-team stage that relies purely on Sonic or Aqua Road that runs the risk of just being nothing but water slides)
  • The boards have few 2-3 runs and have been inactive for such a long time that it seems like a waste of space (this one will take a very long time don't worry)

This is very much an experimental way of doing things from my end, but I can't expect y'all to post runs of every single stage+wispon combo before making the boards, so I figured I'd give it a chance

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

Noted! I'll add it for that stage then. If people end up not running certain wispons I'll just remove those options on that stage.

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

I'll try to find some time this weekend to create the subcategories btw, ruleset seems good and there's some really motivated people here.

I'll start with Burst, Lightning, Void and Asteroid. Not too worried about those getting interest.

Not sold on Cube and Hover as of yet, but I can add those easily later down the line, so if you have runs of those at any point you can post them in this thread.

Drill won't get its own category of course, since it already dominates the "Any Wispon" subcategory anyway :)

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

I can make sure the subcategories apply to both Normal and Super Sonic yeah, it's a simple setting fortunately.

So your choice really. If you're unsure I'll probably start out with just Normal and if the desire for Super is there later down the line I can switch it for those stages ezpz.

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

Since it technically counts, my old Null Space IL was Burst only :)

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

Sounds good and don't worry I was already factoring in the tag-team stages

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

Sorta? It would essentially work the same way that Skills/No Skills works for certain Sonic Generations IL's: https://www.speedrun.com/sonic_generations/Green_Hill#Modern

They both have their own boards, but only the Skills times appear in the stage overview: https://www.speedrun.com/sonic_generations/individual_levels

NetherlandsCriticalCyd3 years ago

Yeah just link the spreadsheet here so that everyone can see it and post in this thread if they have something to add :)

After discussing it with Sayuri a bit I will say: we're a little bit worried about runs of certain wispons being just... majorly unpopular (like Cube). Two solutions: 1. y'all make sure every stage is covered with multiple runs before the boards are even made or 2. we start out only adding more interesting wispons and then expand as soon as interest in other wispons grows enough.

But hey we're still in the collection phase, so we'll see how things progress from here.

Had a look at site functionality to see how feasible this idea is and yeah it's doable. I wouldn't make it a full category, since categories can only be applied to all stages at once resulting in a ton of empty boards (the Super Sonic problem)

What I CAN do however is make them subcategories, since those can be applied to singular stages. I'd have to make a seperate one for every stage, but considering it's just Avatar stages that's doable (it'd just take me some time). Here's how that would look: http://puu.sh/HxXov/ad2bbc3bfc.png

On the level overview page, only the top times in the main subcategory would be shown, which would be "Any". In this case that's actually preferable, since it doesn't clutter the overview with tons of categories. So yeah, definitely doable from a technical standpoint.

I'll check with Sayuri just in case I'm overlooking something, in the meantime get a collection of ILs ready to show interest and post them here. Preferably from multiple runners. You could gather them in a google spreadsheet or something.
