Best way to go for the Area 1-4 Pterodactyl is to go for 2 hits every time it comes down. There is a chance you can get a 3 damage hit onto the pterodactyl. I currently do not know of a consistent way to achieve this though.
I know how to consistently get 3 hits twice in the fight, but it is really difficult to explain in text. I will upload a video to Youtube demonstrating the technique and link it shortly.
Note that it may be possible to get 3 hits on that third cycle too, it just seems risky. If you get caught jumping while he flies up, he stays really high and you can only get 1 hit the following cycle.
