Hello everyone, I'm your new moderator, Meester Tweester! I was asked to be on board to help fix some of the issues with the leaderboards. As a Day 1 post as moderator, here are some of the things that will change, or change in the future.
New rules:
- WR runs need video proof. Top 3 runs for SMB1 Any% and SMB1 Any% NG+ need video proof due to their popularity. While not needing to record is convenient, it runs into issues in modern speedrunning. There have been cases in the past where some runs have not been timed properly, and without a video we can't check that. Plus, anyone can claim they got a WR or top time without proof, which allows for cheating. This rule will be effective tomorrow, July 17th, 2019. Any runs before the date will currently remain on the leaderboards.
- Emulators are allowed. Using a Flash player instead of using a website usually has no issues for webgames. Technically they aren't emulators since they are running Flash, not emulating it. You can still check the Emulator box if you run from a Flash player. Plus, Flash is shutting down literally next year.
- Also, I added in World 9 for ILs to complete Lost Levels.
Issues being put up to a vote in the Discord: I am putting these up to a vote since these are more drastic changes and I want people to voice their opinions on the matter if they want to. These will be up to vote for a week, so it will end on July 23rd, 2019. You can join the Discord on the sidebar or here: https://discordapp.com/invite/Sze2JTH React with thumbs up or thumbs down to vote.
- To show how popular each category is, I counted the sum of players in each category. Sum of players means you can be counted multiple times for multiple characters. You can see which ones have few or 0 runs.
- Merge Hard subcategories into the normal subcategory. Let's face it, lots of subcategories in this game are empty. We can merge categories together and add a difficulty value so you can still sort by only Hard difficulties (or Normal or Easy). The Kaizo Pack will be moved into All 3 Level Packs.
- Remove 1.0 categories. Adding 1.0 is a little much, especially since only 2 people have ran it for full game. We can stick to only the current version.
- Remove All Cheats. It has 0 runs, and the grind for one run of the category would be incredibly long. It can always be suggested and added back in later if there is enough interest.
- If these pass, the idea is to have the following 11 categories for full game: SMB1 Any%, SMB1 Warpless, SMB1 Any% NG+, Lost Levels Any% 8-4, Lost Levels Warpless 8-4, Lost Levels Any% D-4, Lost Levels Warpless D-4, Special Any%, All 3 Any%, All 3 Warpless, and All 3 All Stages.
- Any runs in a removed category can be recorded onto a spreadsheet for preservation.
Issues: Here are some other noted issues we can go over in the future.
- IL timing is inconsistent
- A ton of IL categories with only a few with runs
- Some runs are not reviewed properly
I'd like to thank Daravae for this great opportunity. I will help the community lead these leaderboards in the right direction.
Play Chompster here: https://htwins.net/carelics/Chompster.html
Just a heads up, since Curly was updated into the game in v1.0.2 along with 7 new quests, 100% and All Quests requires you to do all 89 quests. (75 main quests, 7 Cotton quests, 7 Curly quests)
Yeah maybe, very few are run. I might still like to do them.
In Battle For Dream Island Again 5b, we are using IGT for ILs and RTA for full game. Since the default timing method is IGT, it makes it so that full game runs show by IGT PBs and not RTA PBs. Is there a way to change the default timing method for single categories? Should we remove the IGT from full game runs and put them in the description?
edit: I've since moved IGT to the description of full-game runs to fix the issue
I don't know much about if this is right or not, but with the current strategies a human 4:54 probably won't happen. It probably will happens some day, though, I'll give it a few more years.
I'm assuming this was made up from the ground up in Flash so it won't have the same exploits the SMB1 engine used on NES
I've ran a lot of webgames before and they link to the game in a stickied forum post, in resources, or on the sidebar. This has lead to absolutely zero issue, I've never even heard of this argument before today.
"host, distribute, or allow ILLEGAL distribution of COMMERCIALLY owned games or ROMS"
Posting a link to a free webgame is not illegal, and I wouldn't call it commercially owned either. Something free is the opposite of the definition of commercial.
- There Is No Game, the webgame speedgame with the most players, links to two websites with the game and the Google Play store.
- Goime 500, which has the most full-game runs out of any webgame speedgame and the 2nd most players, links to the game in the sidebar, resources, and forum. I am friends with the mods, Discord staff, and top runners. Even the creator approves of the speedrun community and links to the SRC page on the game's website.
"It means that you can't distribute games on the website"
No, illegal distribution. Linking to the official website is the opposite of that.
"And distributing is a lot like commercializing it."
Commercializing it would be like us making you watch an ad or donate before playing their game. Linking to the free game for free is not commercializing it. Also it says "commercially owned games." This game is free the opposite of commercial.
In short, linking to free webgames happens all the time on this site, is completely allowed and unopposed, and your arguments hold no water.
@Mars02 It's literally the official website lol. Sharing a link to a webgame on the official website is completely legal.
I don't think RyanGames' IL runs use the timing that the rules. The rules say time from the start of the lives screen to when it cuts to the next level's lives screen, but he only times fromwhen gameplay starts to the flagpole, it looks like. https://www.speedrun.com/smbc/run/zn45633m
edit: Also World 9 for Lost Levels is missing from the IL categories (9-1, 9-2, 9-3, and 9-4.)
Not sure what else you can do lol. Level 1 can be beaten with 0 coins and Level 3 can be beaten with 1 coin, then 17 coins for full-game. These would be "Minimum Coins". Also, beating the game blindfolded is probably possible.
Sorry for the late reply, but we've determined the requirements for 100%.
- Complete all 82 Quests (75 main quests and 7 Cotton quests)
- Complete all 17 Challenge quests
- 100% Collection / 145 entries in Library (55 creatures, 12 plants, 19 ingredients, 23 dishes, 36 treasures)
Beating Time Attack quests are not required.
edit June 27, 2019: 100% category is now on the leaderboards.
I will just be tracking Any% Current Patch for now unless another category/patch becomes more major. Please tell me if you see an inaccuracy in here. The first few days were hard to track because they were before the leaderboard and the world record changed fast. Also I have thoughts about doing ILs too but have only written up the full game for now.

Here are some other early potential world records that are off the leaderboard. Some of these are unverified, have major issues that would not make them official (although these likely weren't cheated), use different timing methods/rules, or their dates make them hard to put into the world record progression. Tell me if you find any more early speedruns. Note that these could actually be world records so they are a good side note and may be added into the progression in the future.

I'm sorry, but this is inexcusable. The calendar when submitting has a Year 0 when it should go straight from -1 to 1.
Now for Simple Loop, Flashing Bars, and subsequently 5 Tracks, now you can clarify if your run had the lap bug where missing a checkpoint made your lap not count. I have already set the variable for every run on the leaderboards so far with available video. I also added people's personal best of the category with or without it in case it wasn't on the leaderboards. You can also sort by only those with, or only those without. Also I updated the rules for all the categories and sub categories that it affects to fit the new rules.
