You need to delay the Star punch a bit, if you do it immediately after getting the 3rd Star or just too soon it wont work. It might be kinda Tricky to get the Timing down at first. The delay is also not that big, maybe just about a second (this is just a rough estimate)

Keep trying and you'll get it eventually.
