Timer starts when player gains control of Mario on World 1-1. Time ends when Mario breaks a brick. According to the instruction booklet, the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom were trapped in brick blocks. When Mario obtains a mushroom he can break blocks. However, nothing comes out of the blocks.
