By pausing and exiting a level after gex's lives fall to 0 and before the game over screen appears will allow gex to survive with 0 lives. After the next death gex's lives will loop around to 255. (note: be careful not to die in the overworld when you are on 0 lives). This can save a run that was otherwise going to get game over.
