I went and frame counted the runs segment by segment ... apart from kelsey's mistake in boxing, it appears tom is able to gain all his time from selecting the hand ~0.1 to ~0.2 seconds faster each time, closer to the first frame possible whereas kelsey's is farther after the first possible frame.
Yeah I was always in favor of adding milliseconds because I've had three 2:02 runs all end up within 4 frame of each other.
The previous moderator of this game (prior to me, char and yels) didn't want to do milliseconds, so the fastest of my 2:02's (2:02.767) never got verified ... glad Oreb helped drive the impetus to make the change, and thanks yels/char for updating it all and GG Oreb on the second person to 2:02!!!
LET'S GO! What a great Zone J!
GG Neithend...you'll get WR back soon :-)
"But then this entire board becomes nearly 100% invalidated. xD
You'll have a situation where in the future if people want to run demo mode, they're forced into waiting 16s for an time that will ultimately be noncompetitive compared to the best future RNG times."
the entire board isn't invalidated. My time won't be invalid if someone beats it with no RNG lock
personally, I see getting past zone B twice a stream (endy's estimate was maybe 1 in 50 runs, his WR stream he got out of B twice....which goes down even further now that 0 and B are more optimized than they were 4-5 years ago) thanks to terrible RNG a bigger hurdle/pain point to getting into this game at a competitive level than waiting 16.7 seconds each attempt
It changes per frame, but there's no way to ensure what frame you move on to the next level for the next level's RNG
It'd be a helluva grind to get perfect RNG with optimized strats, and if (and maybe when) that day comes, then good! But that doesn't make there an issue now, at all.
I just see it as a bunch of people not wanting to wait 16.7 seconds because it bothers them (but doesn't bother plenty of us)
also, it'd be unfair to old runs to switch to timing from power on, because sometimes they waited on the title screen anyway even without RNG locking.
Mashing on the title screen is a QOL downgrade for sure.
demo + current WR is already not faster than the non-RNG WR and never will be (endy's 9:54.19 - 16.7 = 9:37.49, not possible)
I don't see an issue with that at all. Timing starts from character selection because then we're "playing" the game
If we included time from power on waiting for the demo, then chip becomes slightly more optimized than dale just by menuing
this is the real reason why dave wants that :-P
And FWIW, if we did a romhack I'd far prefer that route to loading a savestate.
But I definitely vote for keeping it as is, in general.
Waiting doesn't bother me one bit. I use it as time to catch up on chat, etc. I'd prefer having it the way it's intended even though I don't see it as unfair to myself or past runners. But a romhack skipping the begging for 16 seconds nixes the spirit of it IMO.
I really don't think 16 seconds is "a long time" and I'm 100% sure I've put more attempts into this game than anyone else (because I suck at consistency).
And as Zaelyn says "I can't say that I think allowing romhacks into normal leaderboards is a good practice to break the seal on." -- I 100% agree with that reasoning.
I have no problem putting milliseconds on all the times, but yeah looking back at the board, probably just need the trophy positions and anything that's eventually equal/faster to them
Totally agree with you Char on part 2. Kinda just forgot about the movement before faceoff 1 because I never do it, because it's not advantageous and can only be harmful :D
Hello all,
I am one of the three new moderators for Ice Hockey after inactivity of the previous moderator.
I would love to revitalize this board and get more new runners into the game, because quite frankly it's one of my favorite games of all time. The other moderators are Yelsraek and ShesChardcore.
I have a couple of proposals I'd like to make and leave it up to a community vote. I personally believe these proposals would improve the fairness and quality of the leaderboards, but I don't want to make any changes without feedback from the community.
Proposal 1: Add milliseconds to the leaderboards
- This proposal would add milliseconds to the timing to break all the ties, especially in categories like 10 goals and win the game% where there are plenty of ties. I know myself personally, I have had three runs of 2:02.XXX, each of which were 2 frames apart. My current "WR" run is actually not even the true WR because the previous moderator never added decimals.
Proposal 2: Start timing from puck drop for all categories
- Currently timing starts when you press start on the character selection screen. However, this is a pain point for grinders, because sometimes the initial faceoff will have very bad RNG where the players take their sweet old time getting to the faceoff spot, and you've already lost 1-2 seconds before the game even started. Yes, of course RNG will be a part of this run, but to me it makes sense to remove the initial RNG because you haven't even played the game yet.
I am open to all viewpoints and opinions. I'd love to hear feedback from you, the players, to have a fun and competitive speedrun!
Best, Tecate
