Every character has the same default walk speed, when sprinting this speed gets cranked up to roughly 150%. When the sprint stops, every characters speed gets reset back to walking speed as you expect, all except o'ryen, who retains some of the speed permanently after doing at least 1 sprint in the level. This is why runners use o'ryen for any% runs.
