I know I've told some people that I'd be interested in coming to this event, but I'll post here too anyway. :P
Haven't sent anything to Flicky yet, still got to check if I can make it and get there OK and such.
Not sure if I want to run anything or not, but I can help out on tech of course (ontwoplanks can vouch for me being mostly competent at that!) and other such stuff.
The only thing I worry about is the idea of camping, but I can probably sort something out.
Like Baffan, I also asked already about this but I'll post it here: Pessimistic_Mango is willing to help me commentate The Simpsons: Hit & Run via Skype.
For GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony, jolzi can help commentate of course, if he wants to and is there.
I think your colours may be the wrong way around for my runs that are marked, seeing as they're both magenta but both estimates are ~12 minutes longer than my PBs. If this is the case...
The Simpsons: Hit & Run - can be lowered to 1:55, or maybe 1:50 but I think that would be too tight.
Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony - this could be lowered to 2:05 although there are a few things that could cause me to get close to that; for example a piece of RNG can just lose me just under 2 minutes, or I could get a game crash that wastes me 5 minutes, but that doesn't usually happen (but did in a marathon I was in last week!) If possible I will check that the game is stable on whatever computer I am going to run the game on before the marathon starts, or during the marathon but before my run, depending on how the computer situation is going.
Paid just now for the discounted mass housing fee and an air mattress (350 SEK).
As before, if there's any issues do tell me.
The API can usually take full names (or even partial names) too; see the 2nd post in this thread for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It will also try to do some close matches if the game name isn't exact. For example, "Vice City" will also return the same game as I just said.
Just paid mine right now, do tell me if there were any issues or anything, but pretty sure I did it right.
Hopefully the mass housing details get released soon. :)
So because my runs kept dying from the plane strats at the end of Trevor's missions (Crystal Maze/Friends Reunited) I did some thinking, some testing and some practice and just thought I'd post a video of how I do stuff, and some extra tricks I found. It might not all be as fast as it could be or whatever, but if you were to lose the plane, you will lose a lot of time from having to drive instead, so I prefer to be a little safe.
Main points:
- This stuff was done with population density at minimum, but I don't know how much of a difference it makes.
- When you go to land, always try to pull up. If you hit the ground at too much of an angle, your front wheel can lock up and you won't be able to take off as easily, if at all.
- Try to park off the road or on the correct side depending on the way your facing. The chance that a car will then drive into your blades and ruin your plane, or a car being in front of you and you not being able to take off, are a lot lower.
- The place I land in Crystal Maze (near the house) is apparently slower, but I find that way better.
- When you enter the trailer park, if you don't get a car on the road, steal the one to the right (as you go in). If you stick to the outside and take the route I did, the first guy won't see you, meaning you won't get noticed/shot at as soon as usual.
- In the trailer park, you can skip the cutscene when you blow them up completely by pressing the button (G by default) once you've thrown the last bomb, but before it sticks to the last trailer.
- For the marker just outside of Los Santos, don't go into it too quickly, otherwise you will get the cutscene but your plane will continue on. I don't know how this happens, but it did for me once!
I didn't actually think you wanted third, it was just a joking comment I made. I thought you'd understand, but I guess not.
What I like about the DLC variable solution: we can make it so we don't just delete runs, but if someone wants to see a leaderboard with just "fair" (read: non-DLC) times, they have the option to easily do that.
ryedawg, I don't think you actually read what Toriks said :P
(Well, I assume he means literally do nothing, but just don't allow DLC runs from now on if anyone happens to run on that version on the old-gen consoles.)
I think if you go just down the hill after Dead Man Walking, there's a giant tank you can shoot maybe? I forget if that actually worked or not.
EDIT: Changed some runs to "Yes", even though they don't use the DLC, but they already have the garage bought. Read below for more information, but I dunno if this should be kept this way or not?
OK, so after hearing what some people were talking about, it seems like this all revolves around DLC. On the older consoles, once the heist update came out, the DLC weapons are no longer put straight into your weapon wheel, which means if you choose to buy the game right now on old consoles, you are at a disadvantage. I'm not sure about the auto-buying garage though, so someone would have to confirm that.
What I have done right now is add a "DLC" variable, and right now it does not default to "No", although I can be set to do that, but I thought I'd let people see how it looks before I do that.
I went through all of the main categories (Trevor% is going to take at least an hour to go through them all and then go through obsolete runs too) to see how this looks, and if we choose to do it, someone will have to go through the Trevor% runs too (if anyone cares enough about them). For people who's top time had DLC, I went through their obsolete runs to see if they had a run without DLC, but some didn't, and some might do, but their VODs no longer work.
SEE THE EDIT AT THE TOP -
Have a play around with the variable to see how it changes stuff, tell me what you think, etc. I just think the DLC removal is penalising people who did a run before the rule changed, but without at least having the selector, you can't accurately compare runs really, so I guess this is a good middle ground.
BTW, with the "No" option, Dates still has WR, seeing as his old run seems to not use DLC, and Dekap's PB also doesn't seem to, so they still have top times, and Ryedawg gets lovely 3rd place! OneHand
So, uh, people in Dekap's chat were telling me the leaderboards "have gone to shit" and I need to change them. So I tell ryedawg to post on the forums, but he "doesn't want to look like an idiot", so I'll look like the idiot for him I guess.
So I'm not exactly sure what is wanted, but it seems like the DLC debate has come up again in it. Also "everyone should run on one patch(?)". Also, apparently Kyle wants stuff changed, but again, he hasn't said or posted anything, so how am I meant to know?
So I guess this thread is here for people to discuss what they actually mean/want. We need a central, archived place we can talk about this, it's what the forums are for (and luckily are usually used in this way already usually), talking about this stuff in chats/Mumble/TeamSpeak means some people will miss out on points of the debate.
I'll add my points later when I have actually thought about this a bit more.
Nah, he does that because he's bored I think, "as a force of habit" I think is what he says.
In regards to the population density, right now we have no rule for it, because we're not sure how much of a difference it actually makes. In GTA4 (and the DLCs) it's 33% because apparently someone who worked on the game(?) told one of the older runners this is what it was set to on console. But for this game, we have two different generations of console the game is on, and have no idea what it is for either. It's also very hard to just use the GTA4 one, seeing as in this game it has no number (unless you edit the settings manually through the config file or command line I think) and of course, like I already said, it might work differently in this game.
Oh look, after wanting my Grow Home estimate raised, what do I go and do? I go and PB by over 1 minute! So my PB is now 27:02. I would still like to keep the estimate raised though, because there's a couple of things I need to try and keep safe. For example, I did a run after this, and I thought I threw all my seeds down into the water, but one didn't appear, therefore meaning I couldn't finish the run (and I went looking for it for 5 minutes and found it nowhere). I did another run after that one and got a 28:xx run, so still not too bad.
So from the other test run I did yesterday evening on my stream, this time Blitz Intro unlocked before Merryweather, so I went there and did that, and afterwards was still able to find a garbage truck on the road, although that might not be consistent.
It seems like for this part, we'll have to treat the route as "non-linear" and do Blitz Intro if it unlocks, and if not, do Merryweather Heist.
I did a test run a couple of hours ago (from Fame or Shame) and this is what I found:
- After minisub, I had to wait a minute or so for Merryweather Heist to spawn.
- After Merryweather Heist, Blitz Intro spawned quite quickly.
- I got a trash truck on the road, but I had to do a little bit more looking than I did in PB/WR, although it still wasn't that for away. I also saw a couple spawn on the roads nearby after that.
- I couldn't get the tow truck with Trevor. Every time I taxied to it, the mission just disappeared. Switching to Franklin and using him worked though, so I don't know if Trevor can do it or not(?)
- I can't remember where Franklin was when I switched to him, but it doesn't matter because I would usually call a taxi after Boiler Suits anyway, but in this case I could keep the one I already called.
The main reason for this route change was because both me and witwix (doing runs today) had Merryweather heist unlock after minisub, but not Blitz Intro, so there's no reason to sit around for it. Witwix even sat around for 4 minutes or so and it never unlocked, so I don't know what's up with it.
In regards to GTA5 (@KVD), I do technically have WR, but what Flicky says is correct, although I'm not sure if I could shave as much time off (in regards to what Flicky said), but I imagine someone who had grinded the game out more than me could have. I also didn't grind it out as much as my other games I submitted (which all have got through). It makes sense that it didn't get in; it's a long run that might not be as good as it could be, and that's a big amount of the marathon that could be used to show other runs off.
Also, in regards to Grow Home, I think my estimate for All Star Seeds might have been a little bit too low. After practising it a bit, you can do certain things to softlock the run, but I should be able to avoid this if I take my time, but I would have to put the estimate up to 35 minutes. If you don't want to do this but still want the game, I will happily do Any% instead; the estimate I gave for that is more than enough.
I also posted this in the other thread too: you can lower the estimate of The Simpsons: Hit & Run to 2 hours. With some more practice (to check my consistency) this might be able to go even lower.
(You may notice that I have asked to add 5 minutes to an estimate, and then asked you to remove 5 minutes from another. So it technically evens out in the end!)
